Texas disc UFO turns out to be converted T6 trainer

A recently reported Texas UFO is now an IFO, thanks to some good investigative work on the part of SE Texas Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) Field Investigator Fletcher Gray.

Gray read a UFO Examiner story published July 13 - Large disc UFO low to ground over Texas caught on camera - and thought he recognized the object over the water behind children playing in the water.

Gray said that he "did a little research and was able to locate the craft." He said the large red spot behind the wing gave the plane away. He said the actual plane photographed in the account is based just 65 miles from where the photograph was taken.

The pilot of the craft, Gray said, was amused that he was taken for a UFO.

Apparently the angle that the original photo was taken could not pick up the wings and made the object appear to be "saucer-shaped."

Special thanks to Mr. Gray and the entire Texas MUFON team. The truth is out there if you look for it. Now get out there and bring us a little "alien" evidence.

From the original witness testimoney, MUFON Case # 18007.

Hello.First of all,I am an ordinary mother of two and wife in my early 30's who has taken an amazing photo that I'll cherish forever...

My nephew and neice were having their graduation party at the pavillion of the lake where I took the photo. This lake(Lake Granger-Willis Creek Park) is located about 20 miles south/southeast from my current physical address.

Photo: Witness image. MUFON database.

My son and 3 other children had been begging me all day to take them down to the water so they could swim. I finally took them all down to the water when it became cooler that evening. Just me, my son and the three others went down to the water, which was about 50 yards from the pavillion, down the bank that leads to a tiny(non-swimming) beach area.

As they were playing in the water I decided to take a couple of pictures of them, while just sitting there in my lawn chair. The kids were about 10-12 feet out in the water from the bank. It was still pretty sunny and hot and the lake was very calm.

In the picture you can see the kids are playing with and around a lot of logs and sticks, due to the low lake levels because of the hot weather and drought here in Texas.I only took two pictures of the kids with my cell phone camera.

I NEVER HEARD NOR SAW ANYTHING while taking the pictures and as you can tell from the picture, the kids don't even notice what's behind them ! Later that night I was looking through the pictures I had taken throughout the day and realized I caught an unidentified object over the water of the lake !!!

Photo: Witness image cropped and enlarged. MUFON database.

I've held the picture for over a month now because I had no idea who to contact and who I could trust. I e-mailed the picture from my phone to my computer and saved it in my hard drive (personal copywright).

As I zoomed the picture of the disk to a very large size on my computer, I noticed the disk seems to have large green and red lights, which are very bright to the right side of the disk....

PLEASE contact me ASAP for any further details you may have or need ...Thanks so much for taking your time to evaluate my photo!!! Delia

The following is video of this plane from a Columbia, SC, air show in 2000.

Roger, good report. Since most Japanese planes were destroyed after WWII, most Japanese planes seen today are American planes which have been converted to replica Japanese planes. The plane mentioned in this report is "Kate". She was in the movies "Tora, Tora" and "Pearl Harbor". This particular day she was coming back from a air show in Slayton, Texas and at the time was doing a bombing run, reason for the low attitude. The reason for no noise, was because the noise would be heard in the back. Not several miles to the side. This is a very special picture and you should be very proud of taking it. Fletcher is an amazing field investigator. Probably one of the best in MUFON. Not only does he know alot about UFO's but also Astronomy, Air craft, History and as a former police officer is a good crime scene investigator. We at Houston MUFON are lucky to have him. MUFON is more than finding space aliens. It is also about helping people solve mysteries of what they see in the sky.

Investigations done as well as this one do wonders for the reputation of the UFO Hunters. Skeptics often say the Hunters see what they want to and draw conclusions on that basis...
    Great work!

The real mystery is how anyone with the IQ to breathe could mistake that obvious photo of a plane for anything else. Every UFO sighting report needs to open with the words, "Hi, I'm a moron" and include the phrase "personal copywright." This woman needs to be arrested for bad photography. If she can't spot a plane doing a bombing run six inches above the heads of her children, she's just not looking before she clicks the shutter.

I find it disconcerting that this has been dismissed as such. Digital image processing is just a hobby, but even I can tell that object is probably not that trainer, from any angle. The length of the "fuselage" is too long to not see other protrusions from the craft. I'll live with any ridicule from those that know the "obvious," but they are probably people afraid of this phenomenon and look for explanations at least as much as those like me are claimed to look FOR "them." I'm not sure that I would "cherish" the photograph, though I might take it as a "sign." UAPs, day, and night, are certainly increasing all over the world, including here, and TX seems hot. I find that photograph evidence of an increasing amount of UAP activity that others are afraid of. Readers and commenters should thank their lucky stars they haven't had the experiences, or the "sickness," and I and too many children have. Not saying that those children were abducted by that creaft, but saying, are we intimidated?

Houston MUFON stands behind its findings. For the following reasons: The shape, markings and color on the craft match. Also, the pilot was located and confirmed he was flying over the lake at the time she took the photograph. Seekingtreasures if you disagree, then please submit a photograph and video of what you believe the craft to be and we will compare.

srv, point well made - just where is THE INVESTIGATION PHOTOGRAPH of that plane? Didn't the investigation attempt to emulate the submitter's picture, thereby "proving" the explanation? MUFON wants us to take their word simply on faith, and, you ask me to come from St. Louis to do a better investigation! Any good, very good, or excellent investigation FOR THE PUBLIC would have included pictures of emulation that would "explain" the siting. That is my point, the credibility of the investigation seems suspect, including that the "burden of proof" is instead turned on me! sv states the plane is "several miles" away, NO WAY! There is no way that plane would look that large from several miles away without a telephoto lens, which was not used! When someone as amateur as myself can discern these things, what does that say for what is being "stood on?" And if you really do want to see one my pictures, search MUFON for events on 6/10/2009 in MO. I have another from 6/25/2009 I didn't submit.

SeekingTreasures. First off let me say Roger wrote a good article concerning this investigation. However, what you need to understand is that everything which went into this investigation is not in this article. Since I was not the FI on this case, I limit myself in discussing this case. What I can say is Houston MUFON members spent hours reviewing 100's of photos of airplanes. Upon finding this airplane, the owner was then located (no easy task) and confirmed he was flying this aircraft over that lake at the time the lady took the photograph. Video footage of this same plane flying was located and reviewed. Multiple people upon reviewing all the evidence agreed it was this plane. Also, for future references, I have asked the FI to recontact the pilot to determine altitude and distance. In my comments, I used the word "several" because in talking to a FI he had used that word. If you would like to discuss this case further, you may contact the FI on our website. www.houstonmufontx.or

srv, thank you for your mature comments about Roger's article and my comments. I think we agree to disagree about the conclusion of the investigation. Too often public "discussions" as this turn to insults and worse. I respect and appreciate your perspective and the way in which you've presented it. Roger has fast become one of THE Internet source for considerate information about the UFO phenomenon, a million hits recently! Roger, if anything, presents UFO reports before investigations are completed so we can know - and I and many others think he has a knack of choosing quite interesting ones. In this case though, I think the investigation, while done with hard work, may not be considering everything that I may consider. The object does not seem to reflect in the lake, which seems more "evidence" of unknown aerial phenomenon. Because I live near an airport doesn't mean all seen lights ARE planes, even if planes are around. If a "fool," I thought the comments needed a skeptic anyway ;)

What some people forget is that when the woman reported the 'find' in her photo she had the guts to get it checked out. For those so-called 'scientific minded people' (latin name is Sceptic) surely she did the right thing? If you lot want things proved, how else will it happen? She may have been a little deaf not hearing the plane fly by her, and I doubt the kids were making that much noise, but hey, she was distracted... but for those insisting that a UFO is something not of this earth, please, for once in your sorry lives, look up the term UFO. The woman was right and was so was MUFON.
If you're scientificly minded, then trying growing up as well. Stop bullying people who say they have a picture -or whatever else- of a UFO. And, if you're so keen to belittle these people, you prove that aliens or flying suacers DON'T exist! Bozo's.

Wanted to comment you guys made some very good comments. As a MUFON State Section Director I have seen 100's of reported sightings. In my personal opinion, this is one of the best reports I have ever seen. Most reports are, "I saw a strange light in the sky" and no photo. The next step up is a photo of a light. Her's was the best kind. A daylight sighting with a solid object with identification marks which we were able to trace to specific plane. Additional infomation no one else knows but I will tell you all who are interested. The T6 trainer is 29 ft long. Because of that Houston MUFON was able to calculate that is was a 1:966 scale and that it was 1392 ft from the camera. (if she was using a 1:1 lense) meaning no zoom. Question why didn't she hear of see it? In her defense, she had four children swimming probably the sound equal to a jet engine. Therefore, her total focus was on the children's safety. A fleet of UFO's could have flown by and she would not have notice. Well done.
