Pilots see 'spherical' UFO hovering over Manchester, NH

Two commercial pilots at Milford, NH, watched a spherical grey-silver UFO hovering 70,000 to 80,000 feet over nearby Manchester, according to testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) database.

The two were working in a Milford garage when they noticed the unusual object in the sky.

"This object hovered stationary for some 30 to 40 minutes," the witness stated. "I have seen high altitude weather balloons and I know that it would be impossible for a weather balloon at that altitude to remain perfectly stationary for even a few seconds even on the calmest of days."

The object then took off to the northeast "at such a high rate of speed it almost appeared to vanish."

Manchester is the largest city in New Hampshire, in Hillsborough County, population 107,219.

The following is the unedited and as yet uninvestigated report filed with MUFON. Please keep in mind that most UFO reports can be explained as something natural or manmade. If New England MUFON investigates and reports back on this case, I will release an update.

NH, September 26, 2009 - Stationary sphere at high altitude above south central NH. MUFON Case # 22055.

On Sept 26th 2009 I was in Milford, New Hampshire just west of Manchester. I was with a friend of mine. We are both highly experienced commercial airline pilots with almost 60 years and 40 thousand hrs of flight experience between us.

Around noon time my friend called me excitedly to the outside of the garage we were working in. He pointed high up in the sky to the northeast of Milford towards a position I would have to say was very nearly overhead the city of Manchester.

As I looked I saw an object that had to be at an altitude of 70 to 80 thousand feet in altitude hovering over the Manchester area.(please keep in mind that we are both experienced pilots used to making accurate judgements of an object's altitude.)

It was spherical in shape and a greyish silver color. This object hovered stationary for some 30 to 40 minutes. I have seen high altitude weather ballons and I know that it would be impossible for a weather balloon at that altitude to remain perfectly stationary for even a few seconds even on the calmest of days

As for the idea of a helicopter, the object's altitude rules that out.(Most helicopters can't hover out of ground effect much above 10 thousand ft. Cerainly none at 70 to 80 thousand ft.) We both watched the object for 30 to 40 minutes and then watched it takeoff to the northeast at such a high rate of speed it almost appeared to vanish. I don't know what this was but I'm pretty damn sure what it wasn't and so is my friend.

Spherical is the key shape. It fits an all direction craft.

So, just how does one, as a "commercial pilot..." Estimate an unknown size object at 70 to 80 thousand feet? What a silly "estimate." What does ANYTHING look like at such an altitude? Think of the pinpoints of reflection leading contrails well below 50 thousand.

    Bryan,

Their estimates come from experience. They see our aircraft and know the different types and sizes. Seeing all of them in the air on many occasions at different heights and distances. So after a while you get a base feeling to estimate size, distance altitude, speed etc. They can also call in and get other aircraft's altitude, distance, speed etc. So they learn from seeing and experiencing how close their judgments are. I was in the Marine Corps, Air Wing Division. So I also got to see and judge distances etc, with what I was seeing compared to what our instruments told us. After a while you can get pretty dead on! If you can't you're not topnotch material. They don't want us making millions of dollars guessing with our aircraft. Know what you see quickly and accurately. Instruments can get damaged, so we can't always rely upon having them. Experience pays off my friend. Take care

Bryan is spot on calling this one as nonsense. You can only judge something's distance/altitude if you know how big it is in the first place.

For the record I am a now retired Air Force Pilot and have flown to 50,000 feet (but not often), as high as you legally go without a pressure suit.
70 to 80,000 is/was the stuff if SR71's and U2's (and surely new stuff not being talked about) and you don't see or hear them from the ground. -And, any "commercial pilot" would know that.

    Bryan,
Well sir may I firstly thank you for your service to this great nation of ours. What were your superiors stance on UFOs. I know what my superiors stance was, too well. I was around classified aircraft often. In fact I've seen several classified Air Force jets on base before. One was very small, so I chanced taking pictures of it, which you undoubtedly know is strictly forbidden. I got chewed out, in the process someone forgot to pull the film out of my camera. Lucky to even keep the camera. I never developed that roll of film until about 10 years later! I worked with special forces units. So I was around a lot of our top brass and ate many a breakfast etc with them. I really loved the AV-8B Harrier "jump jet". My buddies said I was crazy, it was too dangerous, but that's me! I seen a lot of crazy s.h.i.t in the Marines, how about you in the Air Force? If so dare to talk about any of it? What did you fly mainly? Do you still fly, any private planes?

    LM & Bryn,

I do believe after rereading, they should at least said "Estimated"......and not accurate. Maybe a bit head strong of a statement, sounds like some of the boys I severed with though.... Hahahaha.
Not that any of us Marines were ever too head strong! So after you've picked yourself up off the floor from a good laugh.

I'm thinking what they perhaps saw was what I referred to as orange star like objects. I've seen them make some amazing maneuvers. They were not satellites making 90 degree turns, reversing direction also without even slowing down.
