A group of people in Mississippi saw bright lights in the sky, stopped to take some video footage - and then watched a large group of helicopters move into the area, according to witness testimony filed today at the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) database.
Their video from May 20 was posted May 21 at YouTube under the screen name jim20201.
Are these flares dropped by the military during a training operation with helicopters? Or something more?
From the YouTube page: "Around 10:30 a formation of lights sit in the sky as helicopters head for it. And towards the end watch as 3 lights appear below them. You get to see one appear out of nowhere. Its amazing thing to see.im excited.Hope to get more videos of these strange lights. We did go down to memphis but its too far so we stopped."
Update: The UFO Examiner caught up with photographer Jimmie Jones May 22 - with some additional comments below the video. Please keep in mind that most UFO reports can be explained as something natural or manmade. If Mississippi MUFON investigates and reports back on this case, I will update this page.
Following is the original and unedited MUFON report.
As me and my friends were driving down the road I noticed a group of bright lights sitting in the sky. I immediately speed for a place to park and film. I was extremely excited to be able to film this event. I was in horn lake filming in the shnucks parking lot.
I got out the car and quickly began filming. It started off with 5 lights in a formation and as i began filming there were four but one was leaving. When i first noticed these objects i knew that these were not planes. Planes dont sit in the same spot for an hour.
But as i filmed helicopters began to head for the lights. As i filmed the helicopters as they multiplied i film back at the ufo lights and BAM one was missing. But how can it just vanish and not be seen? An airplane would still be seen if it was leaving but this light was gone completely leaving only 3 lights left. The formation then began to shift. Then two smaller lights appear below the big 3 lights and they all sit in the same spot and then another small light appears out of nowhere and sits there.
The lights then all seem to be coming towards each other. We then decide to head closer to the object as we thought we could get a better view but we didnt. The video i filmed lasts 5 minutes. Its good quality and our reactions are just shocked i guess. I mean what else would you do if you love to read and hear about ufo's and you finally get to film one. I am extremely happy to have caught this footage. I have always believed in ufo's and that the government is indeed hiding something from us. I hope this video attracts many people into believing that there is something going on in our skies, and that i was very lucky to capture this footage. I hope you enjoy.

More details
UFO Examiner caught up with photographer Jimmie Jones on May 22, asking for a few more details. Thanks, Jimmie, for giving our readers a little more to the story. Here's what he had to say.
"After we stopped shooting,we quickly went down to memphis. The lights were still up. But as we got to memphis we couldnt see anything at all due to the trees and the airport so we couldnt tell which direction the lights were in so we head back to horn lake [due to me having to come home] but we stopped by mcdonalds and the lights were still up in the same direction but their were only two left. and they sat further apart and didnt move at all. As we left mcdonalds minutes later, they were still in the same position, i should have filmed the lights but i was in a hurry and i figured that little piece was good enough but i am sorry to not have caught anymore footage. We attempted but their were so many things keepin us from getting closer. Losing the lights, no money to equip us with gas, and me having to go home. But tonight i plan on going out into the boondocks of walls to get a good view and hopefully get lucky enough to find another great site.I am glad that you found me,and saw my video. This is not the only time this has happened. It has been one of my wishes to bring something like this to eye."
The video was shot from the Shnucks Pharmacy parking lot at 3926 Goodman Road W. Horn Lake, MS - in the vicinity of this image.

The region: Horn Lake, Mississippi, is northeast of Memphis.

I could give you footage like this all night long from the military operations area north of 29 Palms, CA. These are most likely flares dropped during training exercises, not of UFOs. I want to believe too, but this isn't it!
FLARES!?!?!?!LMFAO...I served in the Marine Corps for four years active duty and have seen plenty of flares my friend and those ARE NOT flares. For one they do not sit for that long...they move and they have a trail. You know when you see a flare or flares. LOL...flares...how about some swamp gas too...LOL
Peace
They all looked like helicopters to me. Notice how one of the bright dots that looked like the others "turned" into a helicopter from 3:25 to 3:44 in the video.
What you saw must have been the front of the helicopters with their lights turned bright. When they turned sideways, you could clearly see they were helicopters.
Again, check the transformation of one of the bright dots from 3:25 to 3:44 in the video and you will see what what I mean.
Those lights in line are airplanes. Start watching at 3:33 the most upper light has blinking anti-collision lights on both sides. Thus they are airplanes coming in for landing at the airport.
IFO
LOL...go ahead and go back to sleep sheeple. Just remember naysayers...your mind is like a parachute, you have to open it before it will work. Wow, can't believe there are still people who can't put it together. Well good luck in your next life, maybe then you will grow and open yourself up and see and feel what you really are instead of what you are pretending to be.
The film was very good - and since I wasn't there I wouldn't call them helicopters since you can tell by the conversation and the shifting camera that those guys know the difference.
Horn Lake of course is South of Memphis Tennessee.
@rrorrimruoy Sheeple. Hahahaha, takes one to know one my friend!
These are totally flares. Your Marine Corp service must have been on the roadside because your flare experience is totally lacking.
So please, go back to Coast to Coast AM, that's the only place you're going to find aliens. They're hanging out on the dark side of the moon, feeding secret plans to the Bilderberg group, who are really the ones responsible for 9/11, Iraq and the recession which was really set in motion to foil a
...a long-standing Illuminati plot to quietly bleed-off funding from the Treasury for their doomsday weapon, built by Freemasons, in Dubai.
Please turn off the computer before it fries your brain or turns you into an NSA sleeper agent awaiting the eventual zombie apocalypse, because YOU KNOW that's what's really coming. The UFOs are just a diversion for brain-eating undead bastards slowly marching across America.
It's a trick, get an axe.
Ummm... flares on parachtues... You can even see the plane that dropped them flying away. Oh geez. PLEASE people!
2012 wil come
There is a lot going on at once. Many reports of similar sightings. What in the world is going on.
This is the exact same set of lights seen over San Diego on 1-1-08
I think it's safe to say that anyone who claims these are flares are idiots. A careful viewing of the footage will show that the lights are ascending.
Believers and disbelievers are equally blinded by their unshakable prejudices.
Why has noone (not even MUFON it seems) in this case asked the local military authorities what was going on that night? The reply might be a lie, but it could also be an enlightening lie.
did you hear about this?
i think its totally possibe these could be a type of baloon flare/light source. The validity of this story is the length of time the lights were in the air. While they did ascend and descend they never made any indication of intelligent steering.
Only my opinion. These can be baloon lanterns of some sort held up by helium. BUT...they were pretty stationary..so thats pretty strange. The appearance of helicopters indicates military
I happen to live in this area, and have lived here most of my 42 years. The military does not conduct training exercises anywhere near here. Even a helicopter flying over is so unusual that it is cause to go outside and see what is going on.
Not saying it couldn't be flares, but if it were flares, it would be so unusual as to require an explanation, as it has never happened before.
Useful info, Jeff, but does that mean that you were aware of this particular incident, which, whether it was an military exercise or not, seems to have involved several 'choppers?
I repeat that it seems to me that someone (MUFON?) ought to be trying to get an explanation from the military.
To those who do not live in the area: I don't know what that video is of, but there were no military operations going on in the area. The area is suburbia for miles in all directions. It would be like having a war game in the middle of Beverly Hills or New York city. The townsfolk would have to be informed or the news media would have reported on it. The nearest military training site is over 125 + miles away over the horizon. No reason for anyone else to be using flares. No smoke trails indica
No smoke trails indicating flares were visible on the footage that I saw. The volume of helicopter traffc was highly unusual as well. There just isn't that volume of helicopter traffic over Horn Lake/DeSoto County. I don't know what that was, but it all adds up to very unusual for the area.
It should be noted that there is a scaled down Navy base in Millington, just north of Memphis. I suppose it is possible that some type of training could have been going on from there. It is just as possible that is where the helicoptors came from to 'investigate'.
Still not sure what is seen in this video, but it is very interesting.
Guys; you did a great job -thanks so much for sharing your footage!
I wish MUFON (or some authority) would publish an advisory... a 'how to' when it comes to aerial photography.
** Your camera will have a lot of difficulty auto-focusing on a small object in the sky. If you can't achieve a close-up focus quickly, be content to draw back. All the zooming in and out detracts from quality.
** Sometimes if there is a tree or electric line in the same shot, you can focus on that to bring your UFO into an easier, better resolve.
** Hand held cams will exhibit
I think those guys in that tank-like vehicle with the IMAX camera chasing tornadoes should be traveling to UFO hot spots and chasing UFOs to get really good video evidence of their existence. Then, use one of the witnesses and make him/her very vocal and get them plenty of press coverage and draw attention to them. Then, using hidden cameras, video the black cars that arrive and from inside video the men in black that arrive to "quiet" the witness. It could be interesting to find out more about
I live in a subdivision Northeast of Schnuck's. From what I can tell the lights are over my house! I didn't see what those guys saw but I would have loved to. Memphis International Airport and the main FedEx hub is in the very direction these kids were filming. I have observed air traffic in the area for years and I have never seen any aircraft in that formation. If that was airplanes, they would have moved out of the frame much more quickly. I don't think that the FAA or common sense would allow jet planes to fly that close together. There's no reason I can think of that helicopters would hover there.. For one thing, it appears to be in the flight path of air traffic from Memphis International. It would be interesting to see what Memphis Air Traffic Control recorded that night. Very interesting... Someone with knowledge of investigating UFOs, please do so and get back to us. I live there and I need to know! Good job Jimmie...
yes, Horn Lake is just south of Memphis, now who said it was north east DUH! I know the area well...and have for 11 years!
This was painful to watch. This guy was all over the place. I had to stop watching. I wish people would learn how to use their video cameras. Learn how to disable the auto-focus and set it manually so it will focus on long shots. And just as important, learn how to stabilize the camera so it isn't jerking all about. It isn't hard to find something to rest against so it doesn't waver and jitter all around. These few simple details would make improvements by orders of magnitude in video quality. So much so that what is being shot might be that much easier to identify, and it doesn't cost anything but a few minutes familiarizing oneself with the operation of the cameras controls.
Did anyone see the UFOs leave quickly the way most UFOs do? Flares just fizzle out, but a true flying saucer type UFO zips off at incredible speeds.
It's funny how there is a large military base in the exact direction they were facing. I've been there before. Come on people! Use your heads! Now, I am not dismissing the fact that there have been some very weird sightings in the past that seemed to be 'not of this world', but this is not one of them. These are flares. Whoever says the lights are ascending doesn't have any real knowledge of digital video. This Southern Bumpkins' Sony Handicam has an insane amount of i-frame banding and stretch artifacts. There is no way any person who simply watches this video on YouTube can determine the precise behavior of the lights. UFO hunters everywhere: I in no way want to discourage you from scanning the skies for strange objects. However, please start using decent cameras on a ****ing tripod! I've seen an 8yo child operate one. Taking a scientific approach will ensure that, when something inexplicable does happen, you'll have enough good evidence to prove that you aren't bat**** crazy.
The navel base in Millington has not been large since the Clinton administration. Besides it's 30 miles north of Horn Lake, and they don't do training in Memphis, which is where the camera is pointed. As mentioned before, the area they are filming is over the Memphis airport, which happens to be the busiest cargo airport in the world. When I lived in Memphis I saw hundreds of FedEx planes every week, but never saw a military plane unless I was in the vicinity of Millington. I really doubt they would drop flares in a zone of such high air traffic.
I currently live near Memphis and I also watch the FedEx planes come in every night of the week. I'm also a pilot and I've seen the planes stack up on approach into Memphis airport. And if you get at the right angle they show all in a row, just like in this video. The closest ones appear higher and brighter and the lower ones are farther away. These planes look like they're probably inbound from the north and lining up for a left downwind approach to RW 36.
I've seen that, too, while driving up Hwy 55 toward Memphis. It sounds like the most plausible explanation thus far. The idea that the military is dropping flares over that airport is ludicrous.
