Oldest Twitter user is a hoax

Ivy Bean and the Geek Squad tech that set up her account.

The oldest Twitter user is a hoax perputrated by The Geek Squad.

Two UK newspapers (and Examiner.com) ran the story about 104 year old “Ivy Bean” / @ivybean104 joining Twitter.

As alluded to in the story, her Twitter account was set up by the Geek Squad. What was omitted was that @ivybean104 was the victim of a massive PR stunt by the Geek Squad.

This  Twitpic,  taken by Geek Squad by Martin Dix, with Ms. Bean, was on her own Twitpic account. There seems to be no doubt that she just wanted her computer set up and the Geek Squad saw an opportunity to get cheap publicity by exploiting her.

“I’m enjoying Twitter for the first time and having my photo taken.”

She also tweeted:

“I’m on Twitter! Come and follow my feed at IvyBean104.”

That is a big clue: a new Twitter user, 104 years old, says "feed?"

Not hardly.

So how does this make it a hoax? Regardless of being a PR stunt or not, is she or is she not 104 years old and on twitter? I say Kudos to IvyBean104!

This is NOT a hoax - why are you characterizing this falsely? You owe @IvyBean a 104 sized apology dude.

@KJ: sorry, I missed your comment when you made it.
@KJ & Joe Hunkins: Geek squad set it up and somebody else is doing her tweets. It's like Guy Kawasaki, he doesn't do the tweets, just dictates. At least Aplusk does et al, do their own tweeting
