His book is entitled ATTENTION! This Book Will Make You Money. Even for skeptics, that's a hard title to ignore. And sure enough, if you find the book's listing on amazon.com, you'll see no fewer than 20 reviews, with a five-star average. Once again, even skeptics can't ignore numbers like that.
Cleveland's Jim Kukral, who launched this book at the Cornerstone of Hope in Independence Thursday, has made it his business to observe what people do to get attention, both in the real world and on the Internet, and has distilled these observations into a handful of easy-to-remember principles that make up the heart of ATTENTION!
For instance, Kukral relays a now-legendary story about a small company called Grasshopper, a seller of voice-over-internet (VoIP) products, who mailed chocolate-covered real grasshoppers to 5000 people they'd identified as thought leaders. This resulted in a quarter of a million YouTube views for Grasshopper. Plus the coverage in other social media and traditional media as well. There was no need to go into the numbers - I knew that Grasshopper was going to make it.
But Kukral, one of Cleveland's top Twitterers himself, got his hands on some of these things, and while he would not eat them himself, he instantly saw their value, and started sharing the news of his prizes on Facebook and Twitter and everywhere else. I asked him why. (And a good speaker welcomes having a straight-man present.) His answer: "vanity."
There are two reasons people come to the Internet: to have a problem solved, and to be entertained. And we, knowing this, are naturally inclined to share cool stuff we hear about. We love the attention.
Thus the secret of what Kukral calls "attention-getting online marketing." He showed us other examples, involving donuts, billboards, Chuck Norris and Facebook; and this, oddly enough, has the effect of making people in the audience think they (I) can do it too.
