Official New Moon trailer debuts, giving parents images to discuss with teens

To the avid reader, the cliff diving sequence is a much-anticipated part of the movie, and Summit’s decision to include that into the trailer will be hailed as a popular move.

To the novice and concerned parent, however, Jessica’s line, “So, you’re an adrenaline junkie now?” followed by Bella’s cliff diving scene may be misconstrued as an attempted act of suicide.

Parents concerned that the trailer is showing Bella act upon suicidal tendencies and hesitant that an inappropriate message is being sent to teens can take a deep sigh of relief and take the opportunity to query their obsessed children.

All teens go through periods of feeling rejected, unaccepted, and hormonal highs and lows. Bella provides a role model for teenage girls to relate to- her wilted spirit and desire to see images of Edward through reckless behavior is tempered with a sense of strength and undying will to hold on to her beliefs. Ultimately, Bella stays true to herself, stands up to formidible mythical creatures and perseveres.

What are your thoughts about the New Moon trailer? Are there any areas of concern in the trailer that will conjure up conversation between you and your teen?

Thanks for the thoughts on ways to discuss this with the girls. I remember being sad and heart broken at times in my adolescence, but never to the extent that Bella goes to. However, that's not to say that there aren't young women out there who do feel this way and need guidance through their heartbreak. Thanks for being a voice for the parent!

I don't consider Kristen a role model any longer, stop making her look as though she is something she clearly is not.

Thank you for the great post and message. What I liked about the books, and ultimately the interpretations in the trailers and movies, is that they illustrated the survival of the worst emotional pain. It does happen in different degrees to different individuals and I believe knowing that the "teen" is not the only one and that there is life after misery is a good message. Grieving is so real and learning how to get through it is an important lesson.

To clarify, this article talks about Bella, the original character in the Twilight Saga. Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella, is not mentioned in the article, except as visuals showing her in character as Bella Swan.
