Inside the Artist: Oh, Hush! reveals a soft spot for Jacob and Bella

Inspired by the New Moon trailer, the viral band Oh, Hush! decided to pay tribute to Bella via Jacob with their catchy song, “Irresistible.” In the first of a two-part interview, learn more about the intriguing band made famous via MySpace.

Completely elusive and far from one-dimensional, the band Oh, Hush! originated back in the summer of 2007 when a group of friends from various bands collaborated and decided to create a single group. Enticing listeners to focus solely on their music, the band chose to leave their identities a secret.

"A new project would allow us to move into musical directions not really explored in our other projects," says the spokesperson for Oh, Hush!, whose only piece of identity revealed is that he's a unicorn- a man who has read the Twilight Saga.

"We put up a song on MySpace, and people really started getting into what we were doing. One thing led to another and before you knew it we had 40k friends on MySpace, put out a full-length record, had a song spinning on Sirius Hits 1 and had the coolest group of friends and fans a band could ever ask for!!"

In their own words, Oh, Hush! answers all the questions you want to know- all, of course, except the most-asked, never-answered question, “Who’s in your band?” That said, I get pretty close to the answers you’re looking for:

Can you tell me how many people make up the band? How many guys/ how many girls?

I wish I knew because we're still trying to figure this out. But we’re made up of singers, guitar players, bass players, drummers, keyboard players, xylophonists, trianglists, pianists, hand clappers, dog barkers, cowbellers, yodelers, screamers, and autotuners. But on any given day you can say there’s about 5 of us. And after listening to “Shh…I’ve Got A Secret” (one of our songs), I can confirm there’s at least one girl in the band (or else it’s a really really high pitched dude!!?!).

Are you moonlighting as musicians or is this your day job?

Music is our day job, night job, weekend job, early morning job, late night job and every other job imaginable. We’re really blessed to be able to make music for a living. All of us are also involved in other projects outside of Oh, Hush! as well which keeps us even busier. And as Oh, Hush! has taken off a bit the past year or so, it requires even more of a time commitment. But we’re not complaining. It’s all good news for us!!

How do you make money and get your name out there without being signed?

Everyone thinks that you need a record label to succeed in music. I think with the internet these days, record labels are less of a necessity. We’re able to get our music and merch directly to our fans with no label-interference. We’ve got a pretty strong vision for how we want this thing to run so we’re not too willing to give up control to a bunch of record execs who want to run our MySpace page and tell us how to reach our fans. All that to say, we’re certainly not getting rich over here. Far from it. But in 2009 I think it’s very possible to be a successful band without a record label.

What gives you your inspiration for your songs- is there a theme behind them or are they completely random?

I think our music is inspired by everything around us. From our relationships with other people… friends, families, boyfriends/girlfriends. What we watch on TV inspires us. What we read inspires us. I think in a lot of cases our songs revolve around some aspect of a relationship. I keep a notebook (or rather, a lot of notebooks and scraps of paper and cell phone messages to myself) with song ideas that I gather as I’m going through a typical day. And then every once in a while one of those song ideas demands to be written into a full song. Charles Shaw also is very inspirational in the songwriting process!!

Why the 50’s icon chick logo?

For some reason when we were launching the MySpace page and needed a logo, I told an artist friend of mine to “find a woman ‘hushing’ and make sure she’s from the 50’s.” There was just something about the name “Oh, Hush!” to me that just felt “50’s.” Funny enough, the Oh, Hush! Lady has now become associated with my mother (aka MamaHush) – but now I’m starting to think she needs a real name. Any ideas??

What is your ultimate goal?

Wow. Ultimate goal?? That’s like way bigger than a short-term goal and still wayyy bigger than a long-term goal… “ultimate goal” is like the sole goal of our existence!!?! I love it. Never thought about our “ultimate goal before.” But right now I’d have to say our ULTIMATE GOAL is world domination!!

I guess we don’t really think all that long-term with this project. Our goals are just to keep cranking out great songs and including our fans in everything we do. We try to keep things interesting and exciting over on our MySpace page with new contests and new ideas and new ways of providing music and entertainment to people. We include our fans in pretty much everything that we do. So I guess our ultimate goal is to make great songs and make great fans!!

Oh, Hush! has released one 12 song album, titled “The Yellow Album,” and two 5-song digital covers, “Don’t Judge a Record by It’s Covers” and the Christmas EP, “Hush! The Herald Angels Sing.” You can go HERE to purchase their music.

WHY HAS NO ONE commented on this?!?! WOW! If you take the time to listen to the song, and the photoshopped "video," it's and impressive bit of music. These guys are clearly talented musicians who are doing great things in the music world...I hadn't heard them before today, but now I'm pretty interested and really want to check out their myspace page!
