Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla’s Tweet from August 21 should have been the first clue. It said simply, “Vampires!”
For the mature Twilight audience along with those not well-versed in the indie band industry, here’s a primer on the band Death Cab for Cutie:
Who are the band members?
Ben Gibbard – guitar, vocals, piano
Chris Walla – guitar, vocals, keyboards, producer
Nick Harmer – bass
Jason McGerr – drums
Past members include drummers Nathan Good and Michael Schorr.Where did their name come from?
“Death Cab for Cutie” is the title of a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, and is featured on the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour. When and where did they form?
The band formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997. Ben had been playing in a band called Pinwheel making bad choices with hair dye before he and Chris Walla recorded some songs that were released in cassette form on Elsinor Records in 1997. Nick Harmer and Nathan Good joined the band to record Something About Airplanes, released in ’98 when the band joined the Barsuk Records family.
Aside from playing music, Death Cab for Cutie (DCFC) is involved in humanitarian projects as well. During the month of April, all the running that musician Ben Gibbard racked up, a total of 91.16 miles, was calculated for a project called Run for Water Wells, dedicated to bringing clean, fresh water to 138 targeted African villages.
In March 2009, Plug In Music wrote about DCFC and their song “Grapevine Fires”:
"Grapevine Fires" was initially inspired by DCFC vocalist/guitarist Ben Gibbard's up-close-and-personal encounter with 2007's California wildfires. The song - which was recently included on "Change Is Now: Restoring America's Promise," the official commemorative CD-DVD set celebrating President Barack Obama's historic inauguration - motivated Walter Robot to create an animated short film which brilliantly relays the sense of devastating tragedy and forced optimism caused by the fire's wrath.
From amber-burning wildfires to amber-burning eyes of vampires, Death Cab for Cutie’s record label, Atlantic, announced via Summit Entertainment:
After months of speculation, Atlantic and Chop Shop Records have announced that the first single from the upcoming New Moon Soundtrack will be Death Cab for Cutie’s ‘Meet Me On the Equinox’. Fans will be able to hear the song, which was written exclusively for the soundtrack, in its entirety for the first time September 13th on www.mtv.com during the MTV VMAs.
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be in stores October 20th, stay tuned for more information and artist confirmations!
With this announcement, the already popular indie band is aligned to become a household name overnight, enlisting the listening ears of tweens, teens and adults. The soulful sounds of Death Cab for Cutie evoke heartfelt emotion, making it a perfect choice to release inevitable tear-jerks by Twilight fans across the globe with the release of New Moon.
