Xavier Samuel - Summit Entertainment, L.L.C.
As with all The Twilight Saga: Eclipse press, there are hardly any stones left unturned by this interview or that, but one interview that Xavier Samuel recently did explains a lot about how he approached the character of "Riley Biers" (from the experience of his other work) as well as what his fans can expect to see him in next.
Samuel's background in Shakespeare, he explained, had a good deal of influence on how he approached the role.
"[I]t does inform a lot of it," he explained to USA Weekend, "especially the relationship between Riley and Victoria. It mirrors Lady MacBeth and MacBeth’s relationship: She’s kind of behind him and persuading him and manipulating him to do some very evil, terrible things. And because he’s confused and in love, he’s vulnerable in that respect. There is lots of crossover with things I’ve done in the past that really inform the experience and the way I’ve approached it."
As you know, Samuel has just finished shooting Anonymous (which, by the way, reportedly features The Twilight Saga: New Moon star Jamie Campbell Bower as well), and in that film, he'll be taking Shakespeare to another level.
"It’s about the authorship of Shakespeare’s plays, but also perhaps even more so about the relationship between art and politics and how they can impact each other," he said. "I got to play this guy called the Earl of Southampton, a really honorable, loyal young man who’s a patron of the theater that ends up, because of his loyalties to the Earl of Essex, staging a rebellion. It’s kind of cool to go from an evil vampire to an Elizabethan aristocrat."
Finally, he talked a little bit about what fans can expect to see in his TIFF-featured film The Loved Ones.
It's "this really gruesome pop-horror film about this guy who gets abducted by this quirky girl at school. He’s basically tortured. The whole film is like peering into a grotesque dollhouse. It’s really great. You know when you see a horror film and it takes itself too seriously? The wonderful thing about this film is that it has a sense of humor, and it works as a release for the tension the horror brings to it," he explained.
Should be interesting to see where Xavier Samuel goes from here! No doubt, Eclipse will help to open some new doors for him!
