'Twilight' Series moves Washington state legislature to action

Not only has the Twilight Series affected religion in this country (see here), but it is also making law! The 2008 film - which starred Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Jackson Rathbone, Ashley Greene, Peter Facinelli, Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed, and Elizabeth Reaser (and more) - has made its impression upon even the legislators of Washington.

Washington Substitute House Bill number 2042 (draft available here) is a proposed state resolution which would "[r]elat[e] to the incentive in motion picture competitiveness programs . . . . with the sole purpose of revitalizing the state's economic opportunities . . . ."

The Seattle PI (see Pillow Biters) claims that state Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles, a Senate Democrat in Washington, was miffed by the fact that, even though The Twilight Saga: New Moon's literary setting is in the Olympic Peninsula of the United States, it is presently filming in British Columbia (Vancouver), Canada.

The Act provides that all money received for the establishment of a motion picture competitiveness program will be diverted to such avenues as health insurance payments on a retirement plan and a tax credit marketer to promote the state's tax credit programs, as well as administrative costs.

So, what do you think? Are you surprised that Senator Kohl-Welles made mention of the Twilight films in supporting this piece of legislation? Comment below and let us know!

Thanks PB for the tip.

It does not surprise me at all. This is such a huge franchise and they really missed the boat on the financial opportunities for their state. Plus, we as fans would have surely rather it been filmed there to maintain integrity to the books.

sweet! it should be filmed where it actually takes place.

I totally agree with you Maddie, they need that part in about Jasper, it would be funny and if they leave that out, then the plot of them leaving town would be ruined. They need that scene, for comedy and reasoning of them leaving. I can not wait either for the 2nd movie. 7 months is to long, then we have to wait till June for number 3 to come out.

This is a smart move. Of course, Forks already gets tons of tourism thanks to the series, but if the movie were filmed there, it would be an even greater attraction! I'd love for one of the later movies to be filmed in Forks, but I won't be overly upset if it doesn't work out. The locations so far have captured Forks well.

As cool as it would be to have the film actually filmed in Forks it would never happen. The town does not have the means to support a feature movie. It would become EXTREMELY expensive to rent all the equipment, ship it to Forks, put up all the actors and crew in hotels outside the city(there aren't enough in Forks to support an entire crew), the security would be harder to handle since it is a small town and just general costs would go through the roof. Filming in cities like Vancouver saves the movie tons of money that can be spent else where (like keeping original actors and making better sets/special effects).

I am so happy that this is happening. A month too late, cause New Moon still won't be filmed there like it should be. But hopefully Eclipse will be and possibly Breaking Dawn.

I prefer to have the film filmed in where it is in the book! It is ridiculous that Hollywood plays this game! We were able to keep all the actors...we had to fight for Taylor, but what about Solomon and Krys? There character parts were taken away and given to someone else! Like as if security in LA is hard on the cast or any movie star! A year ago Robert could walk anywhere without being noticed and now he cannot even go to mens room without a campsite of girls outside the door! It does not matter where they film, they will be followed everywhere! I wonder how many American girls are going to fly to Italy just to have a chance to see Robert, Kristen, and Ashley. Wow, 7 months.

So you are saying that a film about Atlantis should actually be filmed there? There are also places where filming is illegal. Many of the shrines in China and Japan are illegal to photograph/film. I think it's just silly fan girl wishful thinking to expect that just because there is really a Forks, WA they should film there. The author could have just as easily made up a city to base the story in. The only reason the government has jumped on the Twilight band wagon is because they can make money off of it. Period. End of story.

an attack on freedom to choose what is best for the film co? If this passes it is yet another political slippery slope...really really bad idea.

My husband is a State Senator in the Washington State Legislature-- as soon as I learned that the Twilight Saga was being filmed in Oregon and Vancouver, I bitched to him about the lost revenues for our state (not to mention the great publicity for Forks and the Olympic Peninsula, where we live). I don't think he realized the magnitude of this series, and the potential revenues. Washington has always had a problem with high filming costs, and yet we have so many talented people from that industry living here and needing work. And although Oregon and Vancover are lovely, there's only ONE Hoh Rainforest and First Beach! I'll keep lobbying him -- in the meantime, I'm really glad Jeannie's on it. It
might help if some of you wrote to her [and to my husband, Sen. Tim Sheldon] to encourage them to pass the measure. You can contact them at the Washington State Legislature's website (Google it, kids), where there is an online form for contacting them via e-mail. PS Twilight rocks!

I think that when possible the films should be filmed in the location of the setting. I know it does help the economy in those areas and in tourism. However, sometimes due to other factors such as higher costs, better locations to film certain shots etc it just isnt feasible to keep filming on local location. I think the film companies should be allowed to film where they feel is the best location and keep the government out of it though.

I think some people are missing the point. It's not just about Twilight being filmed in Washington, it's about movies in general.

Think of all the movies that are supposed to take place in Seattle but are filmed in Vancouver. We know that Vancouver isn't Seattle. Aside from some arial shots or a few exterior shots that let you know the flim in supposed to be in Seattle everything else is in Vancouver.

By making it easier and more cost effective for studios to film in Washington we increase the state's revenue and stimulate the economy. All those who work on a movie need places to sleeps, food to eat, cars to drive, etc. So many buisnesses, both large and small, could benifit from more movies being made here in our great state. And when movies are made here, fans come and further sitmulate the economy.

I'm all about free market enterpirse and going where you can get the most bang for your buck, but shouldn't our state do more to get that buck rather than allowing Canada to get it?

WELL FRANKLY, I'M SICK OF OTHER COUNTRIES GETTING OUR JOBS, CAUSE THEY BID CHEAP...

no i am sick of company's going elsewhere and screwing american workers, so they can get cheap labor...
they avoid taxes and have all kinds of loop holes that help them make bigger profits, and pay less...
for those people from other countries, they are happy to get what they can from 'rich american business'... so dont expect any solidarity from them.
but as an american, you should be furious that we will spend millions at the theater to see TWILIGHT, but the studio, and producers, will make canada citizens richer on an american project...
its not the actors fault, its the studios..
THINK OF ALL THE RESTAURANTS, HOTELS, CLUBS, STORES AND WHATEVER ELSE, that these huge productions use during months of shoots, wouldnt you rather see them in an american neighborhood, in your neighborhood?
yeah thats right, in your own neighborhood...
canada doesnt come over here an spend their dime here.

Everytime we go to visit a "set" from the movie Twilgiht there are OTHER PEOPLE there doing the same thing. We spend money! It's a great tourism boost to the economy. BRING BACK TWILIGHT
