Marc Malkin, a slightly less lascivious member of the team over at E! Online, has just addressed the question of whether Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon star Robert Pattinson will be joining the cast of the fourth film (which we hope is going to be made).
Malkin says (video available below) that he doesn't see any reason why Pattinson would not join the cast.
What with the promise of continuity in the series, impending fortune as a result of his work in the series, and continued interest in both him and the film by Twilight fans, Malkin opines that Pattinson would, like his co-star Kristen Stewart apparently, not have any reason to ditch out on the last film.
Some of Pattinson's fans, however, see the equation a little differently. Some fans of his are not Twilight fans, per se. Instead, they grew to love Pattinson for his work on films like The Bad Mother's Handbook, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and The Haunted Airman and more recent films like How To Be and Little Ashes. One such group is the IMDb message board frequenters. These commenters cover all aspects of Pattinson's work in their discussions, but they aren't all Twilight fans.
That said, while Malkin's comments are hopeful and encouraging to Twilight fans to want to see Robert Pattinson continue his role as Edward Cullen in what we hope to be The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, other fans of the actor tend to think that Pattinson would do well to abandon the Twilight ship after his contract is up with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
In the past few days, we've discussed a number of films that have become associated with Pattinson's name in one way or another (see here). It is these sorts of films that groups who don't wish to see Pattinson in Breaking Dawn think he should tackle next.
On the other hand, Twilight fans may, as Malkin indicates, have the upper hand. With Pattinson's new (but firming) relationship with the Twilight studio Summit Entertainment at hand (especially with his recently confirmed involvement in another Summit project, Remember Me - which has a newly announced release date of February 12, 2010), even if Pattinson had lost interest in making the film, his relationship with the studio might win out. This is not to say, however, that Pattinson has lost interest or that he will with making Breaking Dawn, but it is purely a hypothetical for the sake of discussion.
So, I ask you. Do the reasons stated by Marc Malkin pass muster for you, or do you think that it'll take more than just these to keep Pattinson on board? Are there other reasons that you can think of why he'd do the film? Comment below and let us know!

I think it would suck major if he didn't do Breaking Dawn. If he doesn't sign on, i see no reason at all for even the making of the movie. You don't break a series like that! I hate it when people do that! It really ruins the feeling of the movie.
That said, i think, career wise, it would be smart for Rpatz to continue on in the series. I'm afraid that if he jumps ship, then he will be leaving behind some fans, and not to mention some big bucks. Those people (who are just merely Rpatz fans, not twilighters at all) who say he shud jump ship, are crazy!
I also agree with Marc, there is no reason for him not to.
Those are some of my thoughts on the issue.
Please sign on Rob. We all would luv you for it forever!!
Well Robert would have to play the role in BD. He is Edward, the only Edward as we know Edward and no other Actor I think can take his place. That would dissappoint alot of us fans...
That would break me.... Need I say more for all of us. He has got to sign on and I think he will cause why would he not?
I too am a fan of Rob's pre-Twilight works. However, for the sake of continuity to the film series and loyalty to the fanbase that has enabled the remainder of the Twilight Saga series to be made into films, it would behoove Summit, Rob and the other actors to follow through to the end and make Breaking Dawn. Rob is young and has years of acting jobs ahead of him! With the grace of the film gods, New Moon and Eclipse will be 10x better than Twilight (not the best flick I've ever seen, but definitely saw something in Rob). If they (Summit/actors) change boats mid-stream they run a huge risk that the characters built by the current actors will suffer horribly and hence the quality of the film. Although I will continue to support Rob's future endeavors, whether film or music, I am pleading ...Rob, please hang in there with the Twilight series and finish Breaking Dawn ... it is what the book fans are ultimately waiting patiently for!
I wouldn't watch BD if Rob wasn't Edward, and I think I speak for a lot of fans on that one. There would be NO Twilight Saga without him.
Enough said.
It would be horrible if the same people didn't play the same characters. Continuity is good. And I am a huge fan. They all have to follow through and finish. I agree with the other posts: it would just be bad if the same people didn't portray the same characters. I wouldn't watch it if it weren't any other way. They all have to stay!!!!
This was the most bizarre piece of work I have read online...Where did all this conjecture come from? I see no basis for this piece of diatribe. If anyone has followed the Twilight phenomenon from the beginng, would know that the "stars" committed to the next installments, if indeed Twilight was a success. I am sure there were contingencies on both sides, but, essentially, there was committment from the stars to be in the following movies. So, essentially, this was a piece of work started by "someone" to make people freak out that Mr Pattinson wouldn't be in Breaking done..puuleeeze, give me a break???
I think it would ruin the movie if he didn't play Edward. Nobody wants to see all 3 movies and then have to watch a new Edward in the 4th. What would fans have done if they changed the main characters in Harry Potter before? They would have freaked out, and that's what will happen if they change Edward in Breaking Dawn. When people really love a character, they can't easily get used to and except someone else trying to play that character. It ruins shows all the time. I don't think I could stand to watch it if they change actors.
I would hope RP would finish out the Twilight saga with Breaking Dawn..if not for all the fans, but for Stephenie Meyer's; after all, she did create him.
I agree ndnwmn... Just a story to get us worried. You took the words right out of my.... fingers? ;)
Rob Pattinson should absolutely, definitely NOT do BD. The book was bloody awful, a huge letdown. If Pattinson does this, it would ruin his promising career. He will forever be known as that teen vampire guy. Mr. Pattinson is a versatile and multi-talented man - don't waste it on this disaster. Move on to other more challenging projects. DON'T DO BREAKING DAWN!!
i think he should do breaking dawn because no one wants to see a new edward but like the book was kind of a let down but he should do it anyway one moderately ok movie would not ruin his fame, which he gets 40% of from his looks. so go for it ill still love you rob.
Well, if they are going to do BD, they better get a move on. Rob isn't getting any younger! I think he should play Edward, but like the rest of us, I'm sure he's "Twilighted Out!" It will be good to move on....
If they change any of the actors/actresses for the breaking dawn movie then it will not be the same. Robert Pattinson needs to play Edward and Kristin Stewart needs to play Bella and so on. The cast members do not need to change because the movie just wont be as good.
OH; and anytime they can find a new Bella. Kristen's mouth is nothing but trash. Each time I read interviews about her, she just shows her ignorance and lack of education with that trashy mouth of hers.
Thank you Kristy...I am so curious as to how they are going to do all of the bizarre scenes in this movie...I am hoping there will be no holds on the content of the book..I am sorry others didn't like the book, or maybe didn't "get it." I personally thought it was great, and hope that one day, down the road there is a 5th book...Now that one, would possibly have to eliminate Edward and Bella, if the possibility of a movie was there. All the actors would of aged too much to play the parts. But...Jacob ages to 26 in BD, and Renesemee to 15...hmmm? The Volturi promised to be "back" at the end of BD...So, the possiblilities are endless...
Rob outta sight for a few days and the desperate gossip feeders have to reach deep into their heads to come up with any stupid question/rumor to catch any attention?? well..it worked, you got mine! LOL! Rob has stated in past interviews that he signed onto twilight with in mind of doing all 4 books/trilogy's. He is in it for the long haul!
The book sucked is reason enough to bail; he's only signed for 3 movies same with Kristin and I reckon they both may have had enough of the Twilight train by the end of Eclipse.
And plenty of Twilight fans detest the book and would be happy enough if it's never made.
However if they want it made, and if Summit want to do it with Robsten they will need to change the book, have a really high quality director, and chuck a mega bucks budget at it inclduing huge fees for their stars.
I reckon you could just add an epilogue to Eclipse and deal with most of BDawn. so sort of split Eclipse into 2 parts because there isn't much going on in that book either.
Rob did say in a interview that he would do breaking dawn if it was made.
And to add to what Nicole said, Stephenie Meyer has said in an interview (wish I could find it right now) that there wouldn't be a Breaking Dawn without Rob and Kristen.
So, I think if Summit wants to make it, they'd better break out the checkbook...
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!! Robert Pattinson HAS to do Breaking Dawn. He is now the only possible person who could play Edward Cullen. He made the character his own. LOVE HIM!!
Robert Pattinson HAS to do Breaking Dawn! There is no other person who could play Edward as well as Robert..and after doing the first 3 movies you just simply cannot change the actors! it would ruin the fourth movie and that would be a shame considering that the fourth book was the BEST out of the series!! I think the fourth movie would not make as much money as the first three if Robert did not play Edward!
He HAS to play the role :/
without all the same cast what good is it, it would not be twilight and without breaking dawn what was the sense of doing the first 3 movies without breaking dawn the series would be hanging without an ending i liked bd i thought it was the best book of them all and it all leads up to bd whats a movie without an ending
I think he should stay and so should Kristen. It just wouldn't be the same. I have read the books and they are good thank you. If they don't stay it would not be the same. I read the books all the time and i can't see a scene that is right without thinking that Rob and Kristen arn't doing. If it isn't them it wouldn't be the same so anyone who dosn't feel the same well.... Grow Up. The have already made Team Edward tops with R.P on it. Sorry
After reading all three books of Twilight and Ms Myers partial manuscript on Edwards part aka "Midnight"?? I really would like to see an Sega based on the "Breaking Dawn" based on Renesseme and Jacob. Good God the possibility of that with Jacob in competition with the 150 year old half-human and the half-vampire from south america. Or even the potential of Renesseme giving birth to an hybrid of human/vampire/werewolfe child.
I still wished that the first movie was more "true" to the first book. "Twilight" movie was good, but because it didn't remain true to the book, I still feel disappointed.
***sorry correction***
I read all FOUR books
When Rob was interviewed at the Oscars by Ryan Seacrest, Ryan joked that after this year he would be "Twilighted out". Rob added something like "Yes and then of course there will be the 4th one, Breaking Dawn hopefully. Everyone relax. If they make BD, he'll do it. Kristin has said in several interviews that she would do all 4 and if she is in for 4, Rob's not going to miss out on any quality time with her. LOL!
I'm not going to beg, but I do think Rob should do Breaking Dawn. No one looks the same, so for them to go and change the actor who plays Edward it just wouldn't be right. The actor they choose may be able to play the part, but he just wouldn't pull it off the way Rob has done. Besides that, it would look pretty stupid with someone else playing the character. Laters, xx
If they can't get Robert Pattinson, then there is no point in making "Breaking Dawn". I've read all four books, and I did like "Breaking Dawn", I thought it was the best after the first. I wasn't that enthrawled with "New Moon" or "Eclipse", the missing Edward in NM and then Bella's crappy attitude in "Eclipse" had me throwing both books across the room a number of times and cursing like a sailor. But with the promise made by other readers about BD I trudged on. I was discouraged about some of the director's choices in making "Twilight", I never understood the 'kicking puppy' aspect of the bad vampires, they were bad enough at the baseball game I didn't need their evilness pushed down my throat and I would have liked to have seen other areas of the book played out instead. Having said that, Robert Pattinson and Billy Burke saved the enjoyment of the film for me, I thought they were the best actors in the film. So frankly my dears,if Robert isn't in Breaking Dawn, I don't give a damn, I'll just re-read the book and skip the movie.
In my opinion, any sequels that don't continue with the same cast are pretty much a waste. I think I'm joined by millions of others that would say that they couldn't even imagine someone other than Robert playing the role of Edward Cullen, especially after three prior installments of the saga. I believe that he may lean more toward taking the role in Breaking Dawn because Summit probably wouldn't even attempt it without Pattinson on board. It would be less beneficial for them to try and replace him.
I so think that Rob should do Breaking Dawn for one huge reason, No one else can play Edward!!! First off there is no one else sexy enough and I mean okay so they have Rob as Edward in Twilight through Eclipse and then for Breaking Dawn some other dude come's in as Edward I am how odd would that be. I am a huge fan of the Saga and it would be horrible if they had some other guy playing him, like for New Moon when they were all talking about getting someone to talk to play Jacob everyone would have noticed even though Taylor Lautner doesn't even look hardly the same now as he did in Twilight.
i think he should play as Edward in Breaking dawn and all the twilight series movie because no one can play him as good as ROB, and that it would suck if someone else replaced him and playes the role of edward.
OK I'll say it...replacing Rob Pattinson in Breaking Dawn would be like replacing Daniel Radcliffe in Deathly Hallows!
I'm not too worried ... Pattinson seems kind of like George Clooney: Gracious enough to honor the vehicle that helped carry him to astronomical success. The guy (Robert) also seems smart enough to choose amazing, diverse roles in between Twilight Saga films to show his chops when the 'craze' is over.
Breaking Dawn grew on me and I think it can be made into a more appealing movie than just the initial gothic, graphic horror it seems at first glance. If Pattinson is smart he'll realize that there's a whole new facet of Edward in Breaking Dawn that rips our collective hearts apart. "The burning man" will no doubt endear him forever to his fans, Twilight or otherwise.
I am in dyer agreement with Jocelyn. Any sequel not consisting of the same actors and actresses are a waste. .... Twilight was an absolutely fantastic film, and I believe that New Moon, and Eclipse, will be phenomenal as well! Changing the actors in the final movie, Breaking Dawn, would create confict in that the fans have already become accostomed to Ms. Stewart and Mr. Pattinson. They're such a great team in portraying the undying, irrevocable love they share. Changing either character's role, in my opinion, would indeed have an effect on the movie's outcome. It's not so much that Pattinson is an attractive man, but that he's a good actor. He's done great in Twilight and I'm positively sure that he'll do so in the rest of the book's films!
I definitely think that Rob will do Breaking Dawn. He has staed in several interviews that he wants to please his fans and that is what his fans will want. I know he may be getting sick of Twilight and he doesn't want to get type-casted for romantic parts but whats the difference if thee are 3 or 4 movies. The movie wouldn't be the same without Rob or Kristen. It's like when Aunt Vivian was changed in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air...really weird!!
The role of Edward Cullen in BD is very challenging to a young actor if the screenplay is great, he had the greatest moment of his live, his marriage finally, but right after his honeymoon, his wife was dying of miscarriage and he wanted to kill his only child. It's not plainly a romantic role anymore in BD and since Rob has never done similar things before, why shouldn't he do it? It's silly to forgo BD solely for the typecast issue as the character obviously was developed to a more complex level and facing significant crisis of his life, so dramatic that no serious actor should miss. Both Edward's and Bella's roles are difficult to pull off in BD and I really want to see the two talented actors to take up the challenge and reprise them.
If Robert Pattinson doesn't play Edward and Kristen doesn't play Bella I won't see the movie. These two are what make the movies. ROBSTEN all the way.I love them both.
it just wouldn't be the same without them! & if fans are obsessed as i am with everything twilight, it would take the apocalypse to end their interest in twilight.
I am a HUGE fan of the series but if Breaking Dawn did not carry the continuity of the same actors I would in no way waste my time with a substandard movie version that would soil the story line. Edward is unchanging physically since 1918 to see him completely different would be a mockery of what we have accepted in the BASIC STORY. The only person that would be acceptable to change is Bella due the "vampirization" and even that would be hard to swallow so I am hoping Summit will realize the potential financial loss this would cause and contract him in asap.
I love Rob, I think that he is a really talented actor and probably has a great career ahead of him. However he became famous because of Twilight, if he didn't do Breaking Dawn then it would seem like he was turning his back on the thing that made his career, which made him be wanted for other projects. As a Twilight fan I think that I would feel somewhat cheated if they didn't finish the series with the same cast, especially Rob and Kristen. I think that if he left the saga unfinished he would certainly lose the respect and support of many fans. But I'm sure he will stay, he seems like he cares about his fans and the Twilight saga.
I don't think that he will leave the cast of breaking dawn. I think that by leaving the cast, he would be disappointing some of his fans and therefore lose some of his fan base.
I believe that Rob and Kristen will both see this series through. Listening to some of their interviews, they get the devotion of "Twilight" fans. They seem to want to do the best they can to bring these books to life. Even though Malking announced that "Breaking Dawn" is officially set, I heard it is at the stage of working on a script, and nothing has been set beyond that. Have no fear, "Twilight" fans...I think we'll see our favorite Edward and Bella until the very end!!!!! :)
NDMWMN - Rob and Kristen have not yet signed a contract to film "Breaking Dawn." They only committed to the first 3 (said by Rob time after time in interviews). Stephenie Meyer herself said she didn't think "Breaking Dawn" could be made into a film because of the CGI aspect of filming Renesme. Now that a script is being written, I assume Meyer has backed off of that opinion. I'm not a big fan of speculating articles like this one, but it isn't pointless, because the cast isn't set in stone yet. I believe it will be fairly soon because Rob has already aged in the last year (fame will do that to you!).
I'm sure, now that Breaking Dawn is being made into a script that both Pattinson and Stewart will sign on. The continuity of the films woudl be broken if they didn't which would put the films success in jeopardy...don't think that's gonna happen. Besides that both stars HAVE spoken about the possibility of the film being made (prior to it being optioned for script) and both intimated they WOULD take part.
I'm not worried about Kirstin and Rob to be honest with you. I'm worried the Volturi or the wolf pack with be recasted for Eclipes and BD. That is what fans need to be worried about.
If they changed the main people for Breaking Dawn I don't think I would even want to see it. I think since most of the actors signed on for the first three they should just sign up for the forth.
Didn't he mention something like this at a red carpet event of something last year. it's too early for me to do any research on the matter, but from the interviews so far, Rob does appear to be staying for the last two installments. Other than that to not upset to the so called twilighters and their cult like culture, I suggest Rob do something smart and finish it through.
I would think they would sign for a 4th , and if not i would be upset about it, it just wouldn't be the same, he's the one in my head as i re-read and re-read the books now so a change would not be good , not only for me but all the other Twilight fans out there. I do think he and whoever else in the twilight sage SHOULD take on other films in between filming the Twilight saga though.
I really hope he would do the last film- I honestly can't picture another actor playing the part of Edward- same goes for Bella. I don't think I would bother to see the rest of the films if they weren't in them- after all, I don't think it would be possible to find someone as gorgeous as Rob Pattinson!
