'The Twilight Saga: New Moon's Daniel Cudmore, an exclusive interview

Daniel Cudmore, former “Colossus” of X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand and current “Felix” in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, is speaking up.

Widely regarded as a perfect choice for the role of Felix in New Moon, Cudmore graced the stage in Berlin at the Twilight fan event alongside his co-stars Ashley Greene and Charlie Bewley.

Said he at the event, “the way Stephenie Meyer wrote this to make that forbidden love . . . is what rakes everyone in.” “I’ve read them all,” said he of the books. “It just keeps you in the story.”

So, what else is there to know about this young up-and-coming star? A lot.

At six foot, eight inches tall, Cudmore is exceptionally suited for his part in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, but one might wonder whether this affects his role selection as an actor. Not to fear. Says Cudmore, “it affects me sometimes, but it also helps in the fact that there aren’t many actors that look like me, so it helps when going out for new roles.”

Cudmore’s physical features have also brought him to stunt work on several features such as AVPR: Aliens vs Predator – Requiem, Driven To Kill, and The Hole. Says he about stunt work, it is “a very cool aspect of film, and I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to do both. I really enjoy both the acting and the stunts; they both complement each other.”

Daniel Cudmore became so physically deft, in part, due to the fact that his family is one of tall men. A native of British Columbia, Cudmore is one of three brothers that conquer six feet five inches tall. The other part, it seems, is the fact that Cudmore is big into athletic sports. History has it that Cudmore has been a sports fanatic and participant for a very long time.

Though participating in competitive sports in school, Daniel Cudmore was also heavily involved in the drama program at his school as well. I asked him how it was that he was able to balance both worlds so nicely.

Says he, “It was a lot of fun to be able to do both. They are so different which I think helps a lot. It’s nice to be able to dive deep into one of them and forget about the other for a little bit, and there are more girls in the drama classes than on the basketball court.”

Cudmore is still a sports enthusiast and say that “anything that involves the outdoors, I’m all about, whether it be skiing, snowboarding, wakesurfing to mountain-biking. Anything that gets me outside.”

After playing “Colossus” in the X-Men series, Cudmore admits that he has been called by his character’s name once in a while, but has a good attitude about it. Says he, “it’s happened a few times, [but] it’s always a compliment that someone remembers you from a role you did.”

One can expect that Cudmore’s work in The Twilight Saga: New Moon (and, as his character Felix is in Eclipse, hopefully The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and (if made) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn) will gain him the same sort of recognition. Yet, that’s not all he’ll be up to in the next few years.

I asked Cudmore what, in an ideal world, he pictured himself doing in five years. Says he, “hopefully working on cool projects around the world and pushing myself as an actor. If I can stay constantly busy, I’ll be happy.”

The actors from whom he draws inspiration for such goals are many. Says Cudmore, “there are a lot out there, from Russell Crowe to Johnny Depp to Sean Penn, and the list goes on.”

A project that Daniel Cudmore could really sink his teeth in, he says, is “a Bond film. I would love to work on a Bond film.”

From the sounds of things, not only can we look forward to seeing this excellent addition to the cast of The Twilight Saga: New Moon this November, but we can also expect that we’ll be seeing Daniel Cudmore on the big screen for many years to come.

Nice interview Amanda! I own all the X-Men movies so I knew right away who he was. For those who have not seen his work in others films please check him out. I hope we get to see lot's more of him in the future.
It was nice to read about him and to know that he has read all the Twilight books and loves them just as much as we all do.

Thanks for the interview! I knew he was tall, but I had no idea he was THAT tall! Yikes!

I also only know him from the X-Men movies, but I agree that he is pretty much whom I pictured when reading Felix in the novels! And I love that he has read them and enjoyed them!

The casting for NM has just been amazing & I'm eager to see it all come to life on the big screen!

Thanks Amanda for this. I help run a yahoo group on Daniel Cudmore. I'm glad to see he is going to be getting a good role. There are some movies on dvd that he is in that I saw like AVP: R it was to dark to see some of the stunts and there was Alone In the Dark where he played a Swatt member. There was this one that i didn't like i only got it because he was in it and he does have a funny side to him its called Washingtonias. But the best roles he as out are the X2 and X3. Even though they didn't keep their promise for the Juggernautt and Colossus fight its still worth seeing. I'm glad that they are going with Daniel on this movie cause that is the frist guy who I saw that could play Felix. Can't wait tell New Moon comes out.
