'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn' to be two films?

'Breaking Dawn' by Stephenie Meyer - Hatchette Books

Back in November, shortly after The Twilight Saga: New Moon was released to theaters, the conversation was had about whether The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn should be made into one film or two. While there was some dissension in the crowd about the idea of the book being split into two films, there was certainly a crowd in the idea's corner.

The "yeahs" have it, according to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood.

"I have this from several sources, and it's definitive. Filming on the back-to-back movies would begin in mid-October, and Summit Entertainment is looking at 'high-end' directors," it is reported. Finke goes on to say that the films would be made "back to back."

Finke, a reliable source of this sort of information, says that "Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (who's written all the Twilight Saga films) is currently adapting Breaking Dawn."

Of course, you might recall that in that same month, Variety assessed the Breaking Dawn situation, saying that the - to use an Edwardian term - impasse was only a contractual matter, and you also might recall that in November, Summit Entertainment assured fans that the company "look[ed] forward to bringing 'Breaking Dawn' to the big screen." When the issue of whether the film would be one or two made it to the . . .  well . . . breaking point in gossip-style commentary, Stephenie Meyer reached out to say that the issue was no bone of contention between herself and the studio and that her "personal feeling is that it would be very difficult to cram the whole story into one movie."

So there you have it folks. Two movies it is. (Note that there are two major factors missing from this announcement: shooting location and directors. As it seems to stand, a director for these films is as yet unchosen.) What do you think about the film being made into two parts? Comment below and let us know!

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter states that "The studio continues to deny — and did so again today — that that decision has yet been made." Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood is a very reliable source, but it's a policy here to trust Summit's word. So, I suppose, that leaves us at an impasse once again . . .

UPDATE: Official statement from Summit (via GossipCop): "No decision has been made and as we have said all along we are continuing to work with Stephenie Meyer to bring Breaking Dawn to the big screen."

It must be two movies. We would loose too much of the essence of "Breaking Dawn" if it was only one. The best spot to break would be when Bella opens her eyes for the first time as a vampire!

Breaking Dawn HAS to be two movies in order to get enough of the detail in. The birth seen HAS to be in there, it is critical to the plot line. I vote for Chris Weitz for director, he did a great job with New Moon. Waiting for official word from Summit...still.

i dont like the idea of two movies (because i have no patience), but honestly it would work better. and it would feel like "book five" of the saga, besides breaking dawn.

I really hope they don't make it into 2 movies. 1. I'm impatient and don't want to wait for 2 more movies to be made. 2. I'm more that happy to sit through a 3 hr movie and 3. there wasn't THAT much going on in Breaking Dawn to make it into 2 movies. A lot of it was drawn out "thinking" by either Bella or Jacob. There are several points they can breeze through (an probably will, like the practice fighting scenes).

I think 2 movies will be better because there are a lot of characters and background information that are vital to the telling of the story so that a strictly visual audience can understand what is going on. For those of us who have read the saga it would make sense because we already know the background and what is going on. We are also more familiar with many of the characters that will have a larger part in breaking dawn who were only represented in new moon for a few scenes. Without that information most viewers who have not read the series would be lost on what is going on internally between the characters.

Well I am all for 2 movies and I am as impatient as the next person. It has to be done right. And for it being "R" or "PG 13" IT WILL NEVER BE AN "R" Rated movie Stephenie Meyer will not allow that. It has to be where everyone can see it and there are people out there that love the "Twilight Series" that don't watch R rated movies and I am one of those people so KUDOS to Stephenie Meyer for her convictions.

Two movies, it's a no-brainer. It's the longest book of the series, it means prolonging the Twilight phenomenon (meaning more fun for us Twihards and more money for those involved in the movies) AND it means more of the beautiful Rob Pattinson. Of course I think we shall be seeing lots of him in other movies as well, hurrah!

Is this an actual confirmation?? I mean as of this past Monday at the premiere of Valentine's Day Taylor Lautner said that he has signed on for the final part of the saga and Breaking Dawn is going to happen but that Summit is still trying to decide to make one movie that is over three hours long or two back-to-back movies. I hope it's made into two back-to-back movies because one movie that is over three hours long seem's like a little too much and it just seem's too hard to throw everything together like that.

I THINK MAKING THE LAST BOOK INTO TWO MOVIES WOULD GIVE THE ACTORS AND PRODUCERS AND ALL THOSE INVOLVED A CHANCE FOR A BETTER COMPLETION OF WHAT STEPHANIE MEYER HAD IN MIND FOR THE SERIES. ITS OBVIOUS THAT THE SERIES HAS GIVEN A PRODUCT THAT PEOPLE WANT.

It definately needs to be 2 movies. There is too much information to try to cram it into 1 movie and too much would get left out if they try for one movie which means disappointed fans. The first movie can be before Bella becomes a vampire and the 2nd would be the after. Besides, the book is split into 2 parts, may as well do the same with the movie

Breaking dawn was by far the best book and is actually split into 3: bella book 1, jacob and bella book 2! The drawn out 'thinking' gives more depth to pivotal characters to the saga and you finally have questions answered i.e. Why edward can not hear bella's thoughts etc! To miss out the slightest bit would be blasphemy! Although i'm in patient to see summit interpretation I most definately think it has to be 2 films to do Stephanie meyer's masterpiece justice!

Two films definitely. Would be a shame to try and cram Breaking Dawn into one film as so much happens. Will also mean we get more of RPatz and who could argue against that!?!? :)

Oh, yes, will be interesting to see how they deal with some of the content in Breaking Dawn without making it more than PG. Good luck with that!

The last book should definitely be made into 2 movies. The first movie should be the wedding, honeymoon, pregnancy and end with the Edward telling Dr. Cullen that he may have been too late in trying to change Bella...a good cliffhanger to end the first movie. The second movie should begin with how she reacts to waking as a vampire, all the inbetween stuff, then end with the way the book ends...with her and Edward alive and happy...

I think having Breaking Dawn as two films is a great idea. That way we all get more of the story. There are so many good parts in Breaking Dawn that just shouldn't be left out.

  • AJ 2 years ago

I think that Breaking Dawn, like Deathly Hallows, needs to be 2 movies. It will be much easier to be true to the book(s) in a longer version. So much would be lost, it would be a shame to cram a wonderful wrap up in to 90 or 120 minutes.

Two movies, come on it's no-brainer. Two movies would mean a bigger "CASH COW" and that's ultimatley the decision maker IMOP. I know I would pay to see both and so would all the other fans out there. There are tons of people who "aren't gonna read the booK" so they'd pay to see the final installment for closure on the series.

The only reason I don't like the idea is because it would be the mother of all cliffhangers! But I think everything would be covered and nothing would be missed if it was two movies, so I can't complain... But the wait!!! It's my favorite in the series! That will kill me...

I totally agree that breaking dawn should be broken down into two movies, its such an amazing book and has sooooo much within it and many people who have never read the book would be confused, and two back-to-back movies will be a great idea because it will be a much better decision to do it that way. I hope its a confirmation soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure I agree that 2 movies are needed, but boy, will I enjoy seeing both! Because so much is internal dialog it will be interesting to see how M.R. handles the script. Now just wish they'd get moving on it and get it/them done. Looks like we're going to have a long wait after Eclipse comes out in June!

Breaking Dawn NEEDS to be done!!! I agree with it being done in 2 movies, for the simple reason that there is so much that needs to be said & seen for just one movie. This book raps up the entire saga, nothing should be left out!! I also believe that any Twilight fan would sit for hours to see this book come to life, no matter how long. An intermission could be added in the middle if need be.

Breaking Dawn Has to be done. Without this movie people who have not read the books will never know what happens. This book is very important. I think making 2 movies would be a great idea. I am a big Twilight Fan. I have read all the books 4 times over and starting to read them all again for the 5th time. My daughter has dis ablilites and she does not understand the books but she loves the movies.people like this the saga must go on.2 movies will help keep it close to the book.
