The Edward versus Jacob dichotomy in 'New Moon' and 'Eclipse'

Nay, the Team Edward versus Team Jacob dichotomy did not end with the release of the conclusive Stephenie Meyer novel Breaking Dawn.

It runs deep through the stories that are being brought to cinematic life in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

In Twilight, we got but a glimpse of the future of Edward and Jacob's distaste (or, perhaps better spun, dis-smell) for one another near the end at the prom scene.

Though no such quarrel existed in Stephenie Meyer's book version of Twilight, the eye-to-eye showdown (along with other rampant insinuations - i.e., the wolf photo in Bella's bedroom) was but one of many teasers of continuation contained in the film - available and implemented despite the fact that the makers were unsure of the fact that the series would be continued on-screen.

That said, the scene was befitting of future controversy that will and should exist between the two on the coming films.

In New Moon, the once enthusiast of all things Cullen Bella Swan gets a good look into the world of werewolves when Jacob Black takes her under his wing. Not only does Jacob practically lift the jilted Bella from the dead, but he also offers her a glimpse into what life as a Team Jacob-ite would be like. On the other hand, Bella's enigmatic adoration for the Cullens fails to cease, even in their absence, and when the potentiality of being a part of Edward's life (er, existence) arises, she jumps on board, leaving Jacob in the proverbial dust.

Not too fast, though. Bella doesn't altogether forget Jacob Black. Quite the opposite, in fact. In Eclipse, despite Edward's wishes, Bella steals off to La Push to visit her wolfpack on several occasions. So much so, in fact, that Edward eventually has to give in and support the decision - driving her himself. In Eclipse, though, Jacob is devastated when Bella agrees to take Edward's name.

While we all (or, at least most of us) know how the story ends, that won't stop people from watching the films with excitement as the intrigue between the two characters is brought to life before our very eyes.

Underneath all of the animosity is the truth that they both love and adore the same girl. It creates the tension but they both seem to grudgingly respect the other for it. Even in his immaturity, Jacob makes several concessions as to Edward's devotion (once he's back of course), and Edward sincerely thanks Jacob for protecting Bella in his stupid absence.

I loved the deepening of that uneasy respect in Breaking Dawn, even though it still took the power of imprinting to finally allow Jake to let go:-)

i think the edward jacob thing in twilight series is a reson that some people read it because they both care for bella so much and they fight for her love. that is just one of the many thing that is there in the series

Makes me realize how much I'd love a version of Eclipse from Edward's perspective. The angst he must have been going through during those drives to the La Push border - not to mention the hours Bella spent away from him? I can't even imagine.

PS - How is it I've never seen that graphic before? It's fantastic!

I agree with suz that is so true they honestly love the same girl and are completely devoted to her but in the end there can only be one winner of sorts and that is Edward, but it is nice to know that Jacob won't be alone.

The tension between the 2 of them is one of the most interenting things in the series. It's impossible to love only one. To tell the truth sometimes I hate Bella for hurting both Edward and Jacob.
I love the way their... urr... relationship (i can't call friendship) grow. And I believe that's one of the reasons I like Eclipse the best and keep re-reading book 2 in Breaking Dawn. I just enjoy too much to see how Jacob respond to Edward's presence in Bella's life, and I enjoy even more to see how Edward reacts to Jake's thoughts.
Simply fascinating and very funny (especially chapter 22 of Eclipse).

I remember the first time I read New Moon I completly hated Jacob then I re-read it and I fell in love with him! I think it was becasue I was so mad Edward left! lol! But I think Bella is a jerk though if you think about it! She leads Jacob on and then always goes to Edward! She doesnt treat either guy well!!!!

I hate Jacob! I think he's a borderline rapist the way he pushes himself on Bella more than once despite her making it clear they are just friends.

I read all the books and i am so Team Jacob! I mean yeah great the whole Edward and Bella thing but I am a sucker for the nice guy who gets a heartbreak but ends up happy anyways. I am a bad girl who likes the nice guys , not the nice girl who likes the bad guys!

a little off topic, but this article has my mind thinking: SInce there is no confermation that Breakiing Dawn will ever appear on screen, do you hope like I do, that they will end the movie with the wedding that occurs in BD? I am no Amanda by any means, but I am really interested to hear her and your thoughts fellow Amanda followers (i swaer I am starting to know some of you better then my own family)

I'm with Carol--I would LOVE to hear Edward's POV in Eclipse! It was my favorite book, but my heart always breaks for Edward and what he goes through trying to make things up to Bella for leaving her. Then, I want to smack the crap out of Bella for the things she does to both Edward AND Jacob! I had felt some sympathy for Jacob by the end of New Moon, but that was all out the window by the end of Eclipse, because he just kept on and on trying to push things. Ugh.

I am on both teams. I like Edward best in the books, but Jacob in the films. Cos Rob P. is a div.
