As promised, Twilight saga author Stephenie Meyer came onto the Oprah Winfrey Show today to talk about the Twilight series books, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and her cast members Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
In the interview, Meyer retraced her earliest beginnings as a writer - recounting her infamous dream gone right about the precious vampire/human interaction that inspired her not to forget.
She remembered a moment when she didn't know the Twilight story was going to make it to book form - since she'd never been a published author or formal writer before, even with her education and appreciation of literature - but that she felt compelled to be "spending time in this fantasy world." She also talked about having to hide her writing from her husband and how he seemed a bit jealous of her monopolization of their single family computer system. She recounted not having much interaction with him during the writing process due to all of the stories she had swirling around in her head.
Stephenie Meyer talked about the fact that her sister, Emily, was her biggest cheerleader in the writing process, and she also noted the number of rejection letters and "no answers" she got from various publishers, noting that she got a single positive response - and that, of course, turned out to be a good decision on that publisher's part.
Meyer also talked with Oprah Winfrey about how she felt about bringing the Twilight films to life, noting the vividness of her imagination in penning the first book. She stated that she was excited to have Kristen Stewart - an actress which she stated has an incredible and phenomenal caliber of talent - and that she found Robert Pattinson to have an extremely unique and significantly featured face. She noted his ability to turn heads at the outset, and she also said that Pattinson, when he came into make-up as Edward Cullen, really brought to life some of the images she'd had in her own head of the character. She noted that Pattinson is a funny person and that he really transforms from the "Rob" of everyday to the character in a significant way.
When she spoke about The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Meyer stated that she was most excited about the first scene she saw with the wolves. She said that the way that the film brought out the size and power of the wolves had her literally wanting to scream out loud with joy at the capture Chris Weitz had done with the picture.
She also revealed, exclusively to Oprah, the origins of the New Moon Volturi. She said that the New Moon story originally had a very tame and mild ending, but that her mother was the one to suggest a more action-oriented sequence near the end. This is, according to Stephenie Meyer's revelation on Oprah, how the Volturi came to be.
Finally, Meyer was introduced - by video feed - to a number of school administrators and teachers who explained the impact that the Twilight series had upon the literacy of their school children - at least to the effect that they became completely consumed in the series and began to enjoy reading again. They discussed the waiting line that the books caused for the library shelves. This, of course, proved to be a great segue into Oprah's typical show give-away where she partnered with Stephenie Meyer in giving away boxed sets of the Twilight series books to both the school and the audience.
All in all, a great show. Stephenie Meyer looked well, rested, and completely beaming with excitement for the turn that her series has taken in the world of popular culture. She emanated pride, and she was very honest in her discussion with Oprah on the show.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon debuts in theaters this November 20th, and the U.S. premiere for the film takes place this Monday, November 16th, in California.
UPDATE: During the live show, there was a teaser about the fact that Oprah Winfrey was planning to ask Stephenie Meyer whether there would be a fifth book in the Twilight series. After the show, Oprah's website was updated with a clip which discusses that very thing. In the clip (which is available here), Meyer talks about the fact that she knows the future of Edward and Bella, that she envisioned The Host as a three-part series, how she'd love to go back and re-write the Twilight series as a more accomplished and less "raw" author, and more about The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Did she mention anything about the 5th book? Oprah had said in a preview of the show that there will be news about the 5th book but I watched it and didn't see it unless i missed it.
I didn't see it either, she kept saying coming up coming up about the 5th book and I never heard anything!
She never asked about the 5th book ???????
Did she mention Midnight Sun? To my knowledge, that is the fifth book.
I am wondering the same thing about a 5th book. I watched it and they didn't mention it at all. :0( Maybe since the show is live something happened?
there was no mention of it and it kept saying on the bottom of the tv that it kept saying will there be a fifth book
I bet she's going to finish it but doesn't want to tell anyone until New Moon comes out.
Yeah, they kept leading up with the whole 5th book thing but never said anything about it. I know I didn't miss it.
No mention of the 5th big...kind of disappointing!
Yes we all would love to know more of the 5th book !!
I thought it was a great interview and I agree that Stephanie looks great and well rested. One thing that I found to be disappointing though was that while Stephanie was on, every time right before the show went to a commercial, Oprah asked the question - "Will there be a 5th book in the Twilight book? Find out when we return." I sat on the edge of my seat waiting for a comment or anything even mentioned about a 5th book and they didn't say anything at all about it. Not that I wasn't already excited to see Stephanie from the moment I found out about her being on Oprah. I was. It was just I got doubly excited when they mentioned the ultimate question every Twilight fan is dying to have answered and I felt a bit let down.
She never said anything about it. The whole interview is posted on Oprah's website and I read through it again, nothing.
So much about the 5th book... :/
@#&%! I also wanted to know about Midnight Sun. Can't believe she didn't say anything about it. We're all anscious to know!!
no mention of midnight sun...they kept saying that they would talk bout it but they never did..i hope she dose finish midnight sun...
I was also excited to hear about a 5th book they kept mentioning and was dissapointed they never discussed it, that sucks :( ...I guess it will still just be a mystery until something offcial is released...And I also wanted to hear a little about her book "The Host" being made into a movie, I thought since the interview was about her that maybe she would mention something about it because I really loved that book as well....Sooooooo excited for Nov. 20th!!
NO they didn't mention the 5th book, they just kept saying that to keep ratings. WHAT A CROCK!!! Stephenie, if you are reading this PLEASE FINISH MIDNIGHT SUN!!! WE LOVE YOU AND WE LOVE EDWARD! :)
If you want to read some of her 5th book so to her web site there is a few pages on it! It was leaked and that is why she stopped writing it. She decided to put it on her website even if it is still really rough. She said that she plans on going back to it. I can't wait, if you read the pages on there, WOW!
I to watched and waited to hear more of the 5th book. Thinking it may have been Midnight Sun, but nothing was mentioned about the 5th book or Midnight Sun. Why was Oprah stringing us along by saying coming up coming up...ugh!
All in all Stephenie Meyer was fantastic, and absolutely gorgeous! My whole family, all 6 of us have enjoyed the Twilight Saga, and hope that she'll continue writing more Twilight books. Whatever happens with Renesme & Jacob or the halfbreed at the end of Breaking Dawn? I'd love to know.
She talks just a bit about Midnight Sun in the after show clip. It sounded kind of promising that it will come to fruition. It's toward the end of the clip. I think that some people may be confused about the 5th book & MS. Maybe MS will be the 5th book? Don't know, but I'm sure she will finish it. If her mom is pressuring her to finish it, then come on! :)
What possibilities Stephenie would have to continue writing Midnight Sun, Edwards thoughts, throughout the whole Saga. I'm so hooked that I would continue to read his thoughts, then Jacobs, Alice's and Renesme thoughts in a Saga as well.
They are delicious, scrumptious books. I have read them with my children, ages 7-12, and have had quiet time reading with my husband. Who is my Edward!
THANK YOU! Stephenie Meyer for sharing with all of us.
to see the best part of here interview, about the 5th book and all you have to go to Oprha's website. i wish she would have put that part on the tv instead.
Does anyone know if they have started filming for Eclipse or Breaking Dawn?
These actors aren't getting any younger. I wished they filmed Twilight Saga like they did the Lord of the Rings movies. Just kept filming until all of the books/movies were in the can!
They've already finished filming Eclipse. They haven't confirmed even doing Breaking Dawn yet.
I WANT MIDNIGHT SUN....but, I would take any :) Awesome of Stephenie and Oprah to donate books!!!
Thank goodness her mom is hounding her so we don't have to!!!
I would like to see MIDNIGHT SUN finished. It was better than TWILIGHT. Edward needs his own set through out the series. His book for New Moon would be awesome. Where he went, what he did, and him going to the Volturi we will never know unless Stephenie writes it. ECLIPSE can you imagine actually KNOWING what Jacob is thinkingwith Edward's POV for that whole book. Stephenie can only give Edward his own story by continuing the Saga in his POV.
Great interview-- thanks for the highlights. I loved the Host even more than the Twilight series so I'm glad she's going to work on that series soon. I've still only read the first chapter of Midnight Sun: looks like it might be a long wait before I get to read a published version, but it totally makes sense that she'd need to feel alone with the story before she can get immersed in it again.
...and I agree with Michele: Eclipse from Edward's point of view would be AMAZING! 3 words: the tent scene.... If she wanted to come out with an Edward-POV-version of Eclipse before Midnight Sun, there would be no complaints here. :D
Amanda @ 5:55 p.m. Which of Oprah's website has the best part of the interview regarding the 5th book?
never mind I found it the website www.oprah.com/media/20091113-orig-stephenie-meyer
hmm....i wonder do you think eclipse and braking dawn will become movies 2??
Stephenie is amazing to have literally followed her dream, and created a series that girls love so much!
And Jesse, just in case you missed the previous comments, Eclipse was filmed in Vancouver, and is in post-production now. There is no definite word about Breaking Dawn, but Rob Pattinson has discussed filming it several times. I think Summit is waiting until after New Moon is released to announce the filming of Breaking Dawn.
There are 264 pages of Midnight Sun on SM's website. Just enough to have you begging for more. However I do not believe it will make it to film. It really does change your perspective of Edward a bit. You feel his instincts and his pain.
I love her books, and I love the movie (and hopefully all of the ones to come). But Stephenie, PLEASE FINISH MIDNIGHT SUN!! I would love to see it finished, and would love to see more Twilight books. I think it is great that she isn't saying "No, these books have met their end with Breaking Dawn". Cause I just feel like she could go on forever with this Saga. I know I am not the only one who hopes she does. So I look forward to her future writing. I just really hope she finishes Midnight Sun. I am really excited for New Moon and Eclipse. They were my favorite books, so I am really excited to see them come to film.
Thank you Examiner.com for reporting on Stephanie Meyer's visit to Oprah, I missed it and was so glad to see that your reporter covered it and did a great job. Thanks again!
Reply to PamJ:
E-Online, it says that a rep from Summit did say that breaking dawn will be made into a movie. The rep said they are working with Stephenie Meyer but things take time and they want to get it right. I mean think about it, Breaking Dawn is twice as long as the other books, with 2 people narrating it, and some graphic scenes, so naturally its going to take quite a bit more time to figure things out for that movie. The rep said they are trying to figure out a way to keep it PG because that is the target market of Twilight and they don't want a lot of violence and gore in the movie. They say they are wanting to keep it PG specifically for the fan base of teenagers, but there are tons of fans of Twilight who are older than 20. I hope they can stay true to the books. If they are too young to see the movie they shouldn't be reading the book
i live in india and i'm just dying to see these shows but cant!!!!
the vidio providers here say "vidio not availabele in your country"!!! can plzzz someone help me?!?!((my is shruti.jsr@gmail.com)
i just want stephenie to continue midnightsun, i've read the whole series almost 15 times!!! hope to get to see the movie new moon soon(but it wont be on theaters in India! :( )!
Lets start a Midnight Sun petition to get her to finish it!!!!!!!! I CANT STAND IT!!! I NEED to read the rest.. and she stopped it right before the meadow scene on her webpage.. what a tease!!!!!!!!!!!1
the examiner says Jacob's going to be on JAy Leno's show on Monday right here:
tinyurl.com/yaq5g7b
Will he have new clip from the movie??
I wish Stephenie Meyers would PLEASE happily settle in now and write the entire Twilight Saga from Edward's POV. His POV would offer so much insight and emotion to the events throughout the series. PLEASE, Stephenie, PLEASE listen to your mother and get back to writing Midnight Sun and then keep right on writing the rest of the books from Edward's POV. Your fans would be SO VERY HAPPY!!! Please don't make the fans wait too long! Thank you ; )
TWILIGHT Why the only difference between Edward & Fabio is a sun tan: thebooksthatbrockread dot com
Although I would happily read Midnight Sun the moment she finished/published it, I can live without it and would not sign some silly petition to ask her to finish it. She will (obviously, from the interview) not pay any attention to a petition and finish it when she darn well pleases, which is the only way it would be any good.
In the meantime, I am thrilled to hear that she might be continuing The Host into a trilogy soon...I just started reading it for the second time and it is so much better than Twilight.
When my 12 yr. old daughter asked me to buy her Twilight book, she had to convince me that it's very very good. I didn't when i found out it was about this young girl's obsession with a vampire. I hated stories/movies about vamps and so she borrowed it from her friends and she hid the book from me by reading it late into the night. 3 yrs later i heard about the movie Twilight was on the theater. Out of my curiosity i went to see the movie and i got hooked on Edward/Rob and maybe the story itself. Now that i've seen New Moon also i began to ask myself these Q? Are these books/movies worth my time and money to indulge in? What morals(values) do these Books convey to the young readers' minds? Is Bella a good role model for my now 15 yr.old daughter? Is it just purely for entertainment or it can influence her thoughts and actions. This Twilight Mom wants to hear your views about SM's book. We're all in this together.
Got something to say?
