'Bree Tanner' by Stephenie Meyer - Little, Brown Books
Just a few hours ago, it was announced that Stephenie Meyer's The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella had sold over a quarter of a million copies in the United Kingdom - positioning it to be the number one book of the year there - and now, Entertainment Weekly reports that the Bree Tanner novella has sold over 700,000 copies in the United States.
Another interesting piece of information brought forth by EW's report is the staggeringly low number of people who have taken up the opportunity to read the book in its entirety online (at BreeTanner.com).
"Little, Brown, Meyer’s publisher, estimates that only 75,000 people have read the book in its entirety on the website," EW reports.
Bree Tanner book sales in the U.S. have put the novella at the top of USA Today's best-seller list.
So, what do you think it is about having the physical copy that has driven this amount of fans to purchase the book rather than reading it for free online? Is it the memorabilia/collectible aspect or is it the support of Stephenie Meyer's charity of choice? Your thoughts?
By the way, that's six for six for Stephenie Meyer. That's one impressive record of book sales.

I can't remember how many copies the other Twilight books sold within the first few weeks, but 700,000 is a huge number. I think the people who are going to care enough to read it are people who want to support Stephenie and own and cherish her books. I know some people who have read the series are only interested in Edward and Bella's story, so even a free online version might not be enough to tempt them to read it. So, it's the intense fans who are going to buy it.
Incentive to finish Midnight Sun?
I wanted to read the book immediately, but can't afford to buy it right now. I WILL, however, purchase the book as soon as it becomes feasible for me to do so. I LOVED the book, and want to thank Stephenie for the opportunity to read it online. I read the entire thing in one sitting, in about 2 hours and 1/2. I will probably read it again before it expires online. THANK YOU, Stephenie!
I didn't want to read it online because there is something much more appealing about holding a book in your hands rather than staring at a screen.
I do admit that I read the 12 chapters of Midnight Sun on Stephenie's website. I couldn't hold out. It's Edward Cullen, for freak's sake!
Reading an entire book on the computer screen wears on my eyes and makes them tired. I bought it for that reason. I read Midnight Sun on the computer, but it took forever because my eyes would cross after a while. :-) If she published just what she has of Midnight Sun right now, I would buy it so I could read it comfortably in the future.
You're right -- there is something about handling the book. I would happily spend all the money i have on any Twilight-related book. I don't wanna read it online, because i wanna hold it when i read it. I'm not in America, so it takes a while for it to be shipped here, but i'm still waiting anxiously. Oh, happy birthday tomorrow, Edward!
Imagine how many copies of Midnight Sun would sell!! Even though some of it was leaked I think Midnight Sun might outsell Bree Tanner!!
it's only available free online till the 5th of July which is probably why the Smeyer fans want the solid copy. To obsess over it like they do the other books.
May I say Deathly Hollows sold 11 millions copies in the first 24 hours.
I bought it the day it came out. I want to hold the book and have the ability to cary it with me as I did we other books (for months) Not to mention, it was created for the ability to sit it next to her other novels and be part iof the set. I will read nothing of her online, Midnight Sun included. SO I had a couple of purposes for buying it.
It's a great book. This way, you can hold it, read it, re-read it, share it with friends, put it on your shelf, re-read it, re-read it, and re-read it. I think I will read all the books again- in order - and read bree's story in the proper place - right after re-reading eclipse again. reading Stephanie's books is like watching the movie. it is so visual, but not overly so. Thank you Stephanie.
I hope this shows her that she should definitely finish midnight sun, because that would sell twice as many copies!
