In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight (see here and here), Robert Pattinson described his performance as Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga: New Moon to include a rather dark scene.
Said
Pattinson, “it’s kind of as close as possible to the book.” Yet, said he, “there are some really bizarre moments, I mean, ‘cause she’s having constant nightmares all the time. And the nightmares are all based on the person she loves, like, haunting her, so, uh, there’s a lot of kind of weird dreams about death, decay …”
“The
dream sequences are really eerie,” says
Kristen Stewart, “it’s like you have something that is your idea of like perfection but you’re afraid of it while afraid of losing it, it’s like very masochistic.”
“He gets the chance to be a little bit more scary in the dream sequences. He’s not so perfect,” she continues. “One dream sequence which I don’t think anyone will expect,” says
Pattinson, “
Edward is this kind of demon.” “So, hopefully people will be a little freaked out by it.”
Ever since this statement,
fans have been searching page by page through
New Moon trying to figure out just where that is coming from. We know that Bella has nightmares throughout the books, but, in them, they are usually her searching for something that is lost – something that is gone,
Edward.

Yet, there is no demonic Edward to be seen, at least that I could tell. Looking back through
Twilight, though… alas, there is (at least) one possibility.
We already know that there were a lot of parts of
Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight that were left in the cold with the 2008 film by Catherine Hardwicke. Many of the omissions, we also know, disappointed
Twilight fans.
I opened my eyes to a familiar place. Aware in some corner of my consciousness that I was dreaming, I recognized the green light of the forest. I could hear the waves crashing against the rocks somewhere nearby. And I knew that if I found the ocean, I’d be able to see the sun. I was trying to follow the sound, but then Jacob Black was there, tugging on my hand, pulling me back toward the blackest part of the forest.
‘Jacob? What’s wrong?’ I asked. His face was frightened as he yanked with all his strength against my resistance; I didn’t want to go into the dark.
‘Run, Bella, you have to run!’ he whispered, terrified.
‘This way, Bella!’ I recognized Mike’s voice calling out of the gloomy part of the trees, but I couldn’t see him.
‘Why?’ I asked, still pulling against Jacob’s grasp, desperate now to find the sun.
…
And then Edward stepped out from the trees, his skin faintly glowing, his eyes black and dangerous. He held up one hand and beckoned me to come to him. The wolf growled at my feet.
I took a step forward, toward Edward. He smiled then, and his teeth were sharp, pointed.
‘Trust me,’ he purred.
I took another step.
This sequence, in
Twilight, is one of the most revealing and foreshadowing pieces of
Twilight. The dynamics of the three characters involved (these sequences happen on pages 130-131 if you are interested in looking it up) are clearly representative of the tug-of-war that we see play out between Jacob and Edward (and arguably, at least in some small way, Mike) in
New Moon.
Robert Pattinson’s description of the dream sequence at hand in
The Twilight Saga: New Moon seems to be on-point with this passage. Kristen Stewart’s statements about the scene also align quite nicely with this portion of the book.
So, is it possible that this is just a piece of the Twilight text that was left out of the film? After all, the relevancy of the scene is quite high to the story of New Moon. What do you think? Comment below and let us know!

dont forget, she also has that same/similar dream in New Moon, after jacob tries to tell her what he is. Its an intersting twist that, the same dream shows Bella what both Edward and Jacob are.
First of all I do not believe it was left out of the film, because their were so much more to be presented in the 2008 film "Twilight", that was directed by Catherine Hardwick (maybe this could be the reason for change of directors, but she still did a wonderful, outstanding job)maybe this dream scene show a very dark side of Edward, to which he has stated many times in the book "Twilight" that "He's not so perfect", we (fans) have to rembember he is a very dangerous vampire, (not shown in the movie "Twilight") but he can be very loving, kind and caring, for someone he loves. If we flip the script and show the darkside we (fans) will see Edward darkside for a moment. Jacob should look out, because Edward only going to take so much from him regarding Bella, the love of his life. Just think if you had a hidden screct and the love of your life was being pursue by someone whom you did not like at all, but because of the love for your love one you allow for the moment to take place, Even Alice states how do you (Edward) put up with this. Think about it. Peace and blessings.
This Dream sequence is referenced in New Moon even though it happened in the first book, its how Jacob tells Bella what he is, what she remembers when he asks her to think back to that day on the beach. Think it is much more relevant to this film then the last and would make sense for it to be included. I cannot wait for the new moon...or the other two for that matter!!
I think it's okay that they would put it in new moon because it seems relevant. A lot was left out of twilight, which upset me, but I'm glad to hear that they are putting this in new moon, representing some of the struggle between jacob and edward. I think it's beautiful, although the scene, and a lot o fthe movie will not be very appropriate for younger kids. I'm excited for these incredible books to be made into movies. I hope the rest of them are less disappointing than twilight. I'm excited to see rob p. progress in his character...
Rob is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo HOT
I cant wait for new moon
OMG Robert Patterson is soooooooooooooooo hott!! i love "edward cullen i ware your shirt everynight with your face on it1 i love you mwahh! xoxo "bella!" lol
can't wait for new moon eclipse and espesially, BREAKING DAWN!
You guys rock. I read all of your books and I loved them. Why do we have to wait so long for new moon? I cant take it anymore. I also cant wait for all the other movies.
i have read the books several times and recently started new moon again! and the dream sequence is very relevent to new moon around pgs 250-300 bella once again has the dream but it evolves, so even though it is in twilight it is actually very relevent to new moon as well! hope this was helpful...** here is something to wrap ur head around that is not mentioned in the book but is obvious if someone is paying attention... bella is some what precognative... in her dreams at least she always has drems of things comming before they did... such as the beautiful child/ the struggle between jacob and edward werewolf and vampire** although it is never touched upon i feel it is because bella tries so hard to keep her mind private she doesnt open up about her dreams for anyone to put the pieces together... does anyone agree***
When Rob mentioned the bad dreams and him being like a demon, that part of the book was the first thing I thought about. It makes perfect sense to me. Oh how I will love to see Edward become dark. Can't wait!
I can't be absolutely positive because I'm on Breaking Dawn right now, but I am fairly sure that Bella has the same Mike/Edward/Jacob/wolf/vampire dream that she had in Twilight, only the dream in New Moon is sans Mike. I immideately thought to the dream sequense as mentioned before from the Twilight book though.
My second guess, however, was when Bella was drowning after the cliff-diving "incident" (sorry if I spoiled something if you haven't read it), when she said Edward was there. Bella said that she "knew" that she was dying then and Edward was slipping away while she was slipping away. In my opinion, that could lead to a pretty sweet dream sequence as well.
Why does everyone have to over analyse these movies.
It is obvious that movies can't be exactly the same as the books. They would end up being hours long and I for one don't have that much spare time to sit in a movie theatre.
Just enjoy them and the books for what they are. Pure entertainment!!!!
I know these scenes Kristen and Rob talk about are not in the book, but I think they will make the movie more visually dynamic and it will really help you feel the agony Bella feels while Edward is gone if she's having these horrific nightmares about him. I'm okay with the slight deviation from the book as long as it's done well. For time constraint alone there's never going to be any way these movies can be exactly the same as the book, you'd have the longest most boring movie ever. As long as they aren't going clear out in left field with the things they tweak, it will work out fine...
in new moon, there are many references to Bella waking screaming from nightmares...some of which are described and some aren't. My guess was that they are going to get into these nightmares, making them scarier to bring a darker feel to the movie.
This is kind of making me angry. The dreams she's having in the book are just her constantly searching and not finding. I don't think that she would ever imagine Edward as "demonish", even subconsciously. They're just putting it in to spice it up a little bit.
In reality I think having the same searching-and-not-finding dream would be way scarier than dreaming him as a demon, but I get that that doesn't show up very well on screen.
Still, I don't think this is necessary and it goes against the book.
It may be true about that piece in the book they left out. That I know of there is no where in the story line where Edward is viewed as Demonic....Now at the beginning of the book when Bella dreams of her being old like her grandmother and she see Edward young with her. But not sure of this whole demonic part unless they are talking about her B-day Party at the Cullens when she has her accident. Only areas I can think about at this time.... Or also with the Volturi, when they are leaving and the people are coming in to be Lunch....But Edward demonic...Never...
Yeah, the only thing that I really minded being cut from the Twilight movie was that they didn't mention how Alice became a vampire (as a result of James). That was interesting, and can't be added in any other movies because James is dead :(
I think that dream will fit very nicely into New Moon and I'm excited to see it. However, I like the affect it has better in Twilight: It shows clearly how alien Edward is from Bella, but how she goes against what seems like the natural thing for a human, wanting to be with him anyway (Jacob and Mike in the dream echo the human view that its wrong and he doesn't belong with their world). I think this is such a good place for that, because at that part of the story line she is still learning what he is and struggling to accept all the info coming at her. In New Moon, the competition between Edward and Jacob will be more emphasized by the dream just because of the different context.
Isn't it neat how Stephenie Meyer didn't even have sequels in mind when she wrote this scene? Jacob was never supposed to be a major character, just an agent for Bella discovering what Edward was via Quileute legend. The forshadowing seems cooler to me considering she didn't know Jacob was going to be a werewolf when she wrote it (even though this makes the dream more like a real dream, with Jacob being there and turning to a wolf more of just a random "dream thing", and less of like a prophesy type deal).
i honestly think they're trying to cover up for some mistakes they made that upset book fans, from twilight. i actually figured it was the dream where bella is crossed between edward and jacob, and she follows edward instead. it's eerie definitely or at least that's how i pictured it in my head. But it's a GOOD thing it'll be in New Moon. It's an important scene because it's when Bella puts two and two together after the movie theater scene with jacob and mike :P.
I agree with some of the comments above. IF the dream they are alluding to is the dream in the forest with Jacob, Mike and Edward - one - it is referenced in New Moon and she does have a similar one after Jacob tries to get her to guess his secret (for those interested -New Moon pgs 290-292 and then her reaction on the next few pages .) And while he doesn't appear "demonic", he does appear dangerous in both dreams including sharp pointy teeth (dude - if I saw that in my dream I'd think demonic too!). So - hopefully this is what they're going for. Because since it is in both books and truly is relevant to New Moon - I'm cool with it as long as they do it well (and they're trying so hard to do it right I think they will). Of course if this ISN'T the scene their going for - eh - I wish they wouldn't just throw junk in there just to get more Edward time. I mean - he's my favorite character too, but the whole point of a first person narrative is for the reader to experience what the main character experiences. Much as I love Edward and admire Rob Pattinson, the reader/watcher can't go through what Bella goes through if we see him every 5 seconds. But that's just my opinion (please no hate comments!) :-) By the way - Blissful - I TOTALLY agree with you and had always noticed that - Bella, in her dreams at least does have a certain degree of Pre-cognition (hehe -though her concious mind seems to be somewhat dense) . Interesting Ms. Meyer didn't develop it further once she became a vamp. Heh - maybe Jasper would have felt TOO bad if she'd had super self control, been this super powerful shield AND been pyschic! Heh- would have usurped Alice too ;-)
Well I, for one, am not surprised at all that the writers of New Moon (movie) have elected to portray Edward as 'demonic' in Bella's dream sequences/hallucinations. Everytime she has the delusion, Edwards voice is angry. In Chapter 4 it is described as 'growling', ordering, angry, rebuking her, furious. In chapter 8 it says 'This is reckless and childish and idiotic, Bella, the voice fumed.
Chapter 15, 'his teeth were clenched and his nostrils flared with rage' when she was drowning. Now, in my world, that paints a picture of a pretty angry person...the Edward I imagine when I read this if very 'demonic' in nature...angry, hostile and fuming with rage.
What is crazy is Bella's response to even this Edward. She is so desperate to see/hear him that she loves even this Edward. Her response to this Edward is completely insane...hence the tension of the scenes. So I am pleased the writers have picked up on this unloveable side of Edward and her irrational desire for even him.
I wasnt happy about them showing Edward as a demon. Throughout New Moon all she wants is Edward so if they do make him demon like, he cant stay that wasy because she goes to Italy and gets him and they get back together.
I completely agree with you, Amanda, on the tug-of-war idea between Jacob, Edward and even Mike. Even tho Mike is barely mentioned in the series, he's still a part of Bella's world, meaning this: Mike represents the human world she's SUPPOSED to be in if magic didn't exist. I honestly think he represents Charlie and Renee as well. Edward is not only what she wants, but her destiny. Jacob is also supposed to be in her world, but nobody realizes that (spoiler alert if you haven't finished the series!!!) he's meant for Renesmee. So... yeah... lol hence, the tug-of-war... Be a normal teen (Mike,) go after who's she's supposed to be with (Edward,) or who she THINKS she's supposed to be with (Jacob)?
They need to keep in mind this is a love story and it's not supposed to be dark and scary, especially EDWARD. He sound angry in her delllusions of him, but she was never scared of him that's why she keeped putting herself in dangerous situations to hear his angry velvet voice, as she describes. Edward was nver demonic in any of the books. I hope they don't leave out important scenes and put in unnessisary scenes like they did in the first movie. I want the movie to accurately portray the book.
How do you feel about Edward being the villain? In the book during the dream sequence yes, maybe... But when she finds him in the alley in Italy... He is the sweet Edward, the perfect Edward.... Is he still going to be portrayed that way in the movie? Uggg... are they going to mess it up for us book lovers...
But do love stories sell movies or the action... Thats why they changed directors wasn't it... the "action"...
Frankly, I was bummed that they didn't include that forest scene in "Twilight". It has visuals that seem perfect for a movie.
With that said, it's possible that they could have an altered version of that scene in "New Moon." The question is what would the "message" be? In "Twilight" (pg.139), she realized the dream represented her fear of the word vampire, but not of Edward himself. If he appears demonic in a dream in this movie, what would it represent?
No, the 'real' Edward is certainly not demonic...that is why the reunion with him in Italy is all the more sweeter!! The 'real' Edward would never treat her like that...he quotes Shakespeare to her after all...although in the fourth book (spoiler alert) when he discovers the pregnancy he becomes 'manic' when is is packing and she admits she doesn't want to be around him like that...this is Stephanie making Edward human...men are like that sometimes :P
Everyone needs to RELAX, let's just wait and see how the movie turns out before we pass judgement. We all know it can not follow the books word for word but i do have hopes for this one. Everyone complained about Twilight the movie but look how much money it made no matter what people felt. As far as Edward being demonic, i think that is cool. It's a dream of Edward and could cause more suspense, it's not the way the are portraying the actual character in the movie.
Yes, I agree totally, Ana. But I caaaan't 'RELAX' and I caaan't 'WAIT'... ;)
I agree with you Bissful that Bella has several dreams that continue to develop as time passes and she is drawn into each new experience. If they have Edward as something dark it will be difficult for me to see it. Is there some kind of imprinting between Edward and Bella I can't help but think so.
well im really glad Edward will be in the movie more this way.Good or Bad We just want more
To Trish and others -
Edward certainly thinks of himself as demonic, though, especially in what we have of Midnight Sun. I this scene could be really excellent in showing Bella how Edward sees himself. (One of the most eye-opening things for me about Midnight Sun is showing how tortured he really is. Because the Saga is all from Bella's perspective, after awhile I think we start to forget what a struggle their relationship can be for him and how much he is really denying his true nature.) Plus, the extra scenes they put in Twilight were generally very successful, plot-strengthening, and funny.
Let's not get carried away before we actually see it. :)
Bella really does know that Edward is very dangerous even though she denies it over and over and pushes him. Edward leaving her was confirmation of that for her. Her dreams/halluciations were generated by her own head...no-one else was feeding those ideas...it was coming from inside her...she knew she was on the very edge of danger being with him. I hope that makes sense.
i think that scene is going to fit very well in new moon because in new moon when jacob tells bella to try to figure out what he is she says she has the same dream she had in twiligt where jacob turns into a wolf and thats how she discovers he is a warewolf
She does have that very dream again in new moon when Jacob comes to her at night to try and tell her what he has become and why he can't be with her. If you remember, he says I told you this already last year on the beach when I told you what Edward was. She couldn't remember because she was only paying attention to the Edward part. She then falls asleep and has the same nightmare of Jacob telling her to run and then seeing Edward all demon like and Jacob turning into a wolf. REMEMBER!!!!
I remember that in New Moon, Bella has almost the same dream that she had in Twilight, sans Mike (the vampire/Edward/wold/Jacob dream). That's what I thought of at first. My next thought was when Bella jumped off of the cliff and was drowning (sorry if I spoil anything, guys)... she has a pretty vivid "vision" of Edward before she is "pulled under." I think that sequense would go well with a demonic Edward-esque dream.
it all makes sence now...
but why would they put Twilight into New Moon theyre different stories....?
but then it is possible...
in my opinion i would not like it if they somehow combined the two movies...:(
but i also woulndt be all that dissapointed...
im just sooooooo excited???
To Michelle M
Edward thinks he is a monster, but Bella never thinks of him that way. We also know better. I have read all the books countless times, including Midnight Sun and Edward doesn't see just how beautiful and amazing he really is. I know he is tortured by his desire for her blood but his love for her is greater. Besides These dreams and dellusions are from Bella thoughts not Edwards. I feel anxious because in my opinion they could of did a much better job with Twilight. I didn't think any of the added scenes were as great as the one they didn't take from the book. Why mess with perfection. I feel as thought they didn't establish strong relationships with most of the characters. I hope they stay true to the book, that's all I am hoping for.
the pages are wrong in twilight. Theres no dream sequence on pages 130 and 131. Can anyone tell me what page it's on.
never mind it's pages 113 and 114.
Kelly, you're right, she does have a similar dream in New Moon. I had forgotten that. However, in that dream it doesn't play out exactly the same. She waits for Edward to step out of the trees (pg. 291) but it doesn't actually happen. First she sees Jacob turn into a wolf, when she recognizes it as the one she saw in the meadow, and wakes up screaming after she has the realization that it had Jacob's eyes.
So, they could definitely have a scene based on that in New Moon, but show Edward instead of her just anticipating it. That would be great it they did; it's such a cool visual.
Well, on Stephenie Meyers website, she seems ok with the changes... so should we be all out of whack.... I am and like someone said why mess with perfection . Maybe we are over reacting We know that the movie cant stand up tot the book . We need to keep that in mind Ugggg I wish I had patience LOL
i think that either if it's either a book or a movie it's awsome!
I am glad there will be more of Edward in the New Moon movie.I hope they don't leave as much out as they did in Twilight even if the movie is a little longer that would be worth it to see more details of the story. I can't wait to see how the new director handles it.
edward will never hurt bella cause he loves her and he'll protect her with his life and he wants her to become part of the family and he willmake her a vampire soon and will get married and have a baby and will be in love with each other no matter what!
yeah barbara, i hope they don't leave out more stuff from the last movie.
i saw it lastweek and it was awsome!
yea i cant wait to see more edward. i think it should be more scary and i cant wait.!!! team edward.!!!!
I think fans are so desperate to figure it all out that they are getting WAY ahead of themselves. I recall Stephenie Meyer herself saying that she was satisfied with changes from book to movie if she could "see her characters doing what they were doing in the movie". (It's a paraphrase, not a direct quote..sorry). So I think it is very possible that we will see something that is NOT in any of the books at all. Hopefully whatever it is that the screenwriter and director dream up, it will be something we will enjoy seeing. :-)
I don't mind if they change some things from the book, i'd love to see "Dark Edward"
im so looking forward to this movie i think it's gonna be better than the 1st one.
i think they should have put that book sequence in the first movie because it is preparing for the second book/movie about what jacob black is going to become. but im ready to see what they are going to be doing in new moon. i am so ready for it to come out. and i like that they are putting more edward in there...that means more eye candy!!
