'Nurse Jackie': 'Twilight' star Peter Facinelli shines as a less sophisticated doctor (review/video)

Twilight, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and The Absinthe Drinkers star Peter Facinelli recently sent out a video inviting Twilight fans to check out his new series with The Sopranos star Edie Falco called Nurse Jackie.

This week, this examiner got a sneak peek of the first episode of the series, and, my, was it interesting.

For starters, the voice of the show is unabashedly that of a less humble Edie Falco than we saw in The Sopranos. Un-cut, un-ashamed, and rather un-friendly, “Nurse Jackie” is “a force to be reckoned with” in her (and it is hers) hospital. “Quiet and mean, those are my people,” says Nurse Jackie, summarizing the gist of her character’s aspersions.

Bowing to her (drug-induced) excellence and wisdom is Peter Facinelli’s character “Dr. Cooper,” for reasons which the opening scene quite clearly explains.

Making his debut in the series as a very different type of doctor, Facinelli graces the screen with life and voracity. Though lab coats hardly change (they’re all, well, white), Dr. Cooper is more than slightly distinguished from Dr. Cullen. Bubbly, exhaustingly naïve, and inappropriately humored, Facinelli’s character Dr. Cooper is less charismatic and worldly than that of his character Dr. Cullen.

His hubris, it turns out, is unfounded, and in his very first scene in Nurse Jackie, Facinelli’s character is proven wrong by Falco’s character – dead wrong. This sets the stage well for the paradigm that is in play between Falco’s and Facinelli’s characters in the series (as evidenced by the preview below, which is not recommended for those under the age of 13).

The first showdown that occurs between Dr. Cooper (Facinelli) and Nurse Jackie (Falco) is tough. While Cooper is carefree, luminous, and slightly vapid, Jackie is harsh, derogatory (necessarily and deservedly so), and on top of her game (and quite duplicitous, might I say - shocker ending). During her onslaught parade of demeaning remarks, Cooper’s “involuntary” response to stress is introduced. Putting an unhesitant hand to Falco’s upper-torso female organs, Cooper’s embarrassment is less than ordinary for the circumstances – much like his response to the first incident.

Proving to be a show worth watching, the first episode of Nurse Jackie was fascinating. Setting the stage for a thousand different avenues of intrigue, it certainly leaves the viewer thirsting for more.

Nurse Jackie premiers on Showtime on Monday, June 8th at 10:30 PM ET/PT, and more information can be found at its website.

I watched the first episode and have to say that I love the flawed characters and style of "Nurse Jackie". I'd watch it even if Peter Facinelli wasn't in it!
