Muse fans may not like it, but their band will be on the 'New Moon' soundtrack

Last week, before Gina McIntyre had her behind-the-scenes round-up with The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz, we talked about whether Muse would be making a repeat appearance on the second soundtrack from the Twilight series.

Fans of Muse that do not also happen to be Twilight series fans were not pleased.

Here are a couple of comments that were left on the article:

  • "From an Atheist's point of view, for me to be praying to 'god' for Muse to not be on the next stupid Twilight soundtrack, that's pretty serious."
  • "i'm sick of muses epicness being tainted by the lameness that is twilight"
  • "I don't want to have to fight pre-teen girls for tickets to a live show"
  • "really? seriously people, LEAVE MUSE ALONE!! the are not 'the twilight band' they are MUSE and they are better than twilight. I'm sick of all these people saying that they are muse fans when the only song they know is SMBH."
  • "many fans hope and expect that their music will make a return visit to the twilight music?, who are those fans, really?"
  • "Most Muse fans HATE the fact that they have been thrown into the whole Twilight mess... seeing as it brought on a plague of people who only appreciate it because it was in a crappy movie adaptation of a stupid book. If Muse is in New Moon i will cry."

You get the idea. There were two basic principles echoed in the commentary. The first was a distaste for the novels; fair enough. The second was a large presumption based on a small set of experiences; not so fair, perhaps.

Some of us who happen to be Twilight fans actually liked Muse way back when. My own experience was that I bought Absolution on a whim, loved it, and played the entire album again and again and again any time I was in a bad way (the converse is true for Elliott Smith's XO). Perhaps it is the minority circumstance to have had an appreciation for Muse's work before it became involved in the Twilight series, but perhaps it is not.

In any case, New Moon's director Chris Weitz, told the L.A. Times recently that the soundtrack will indeed have Muse as one of its feature artists (alongside Radiohead and Band of Skulls).

So, to turn back to the original question in the prior article - which Muse song would be appropriate for the New Moon album? Thoughts? Comment below and let us know!

Who cares what Muse fans think? They are still going to be fans before and after it is put on the twilight album so its not what they say is really going to matter....the only opinion that decides weither the music makes it onto the album is if the TWILIGHT FANS like it.....the muse loser fans can go back into there little dark corners where they belong!

I'm with Amanda on this... I was a MUSE fan long before Twilight, Absolution was an album that played in my car and on my computer years ago... then again, I'm probably not the person those guys would ever suspect was one of those "Twilight" people who was at a concert. Still though, why is it that just because they aren't "in to" Twilight... shouldn't they be happy that something is bringing their music into the spotlight and giving a younger generation an appreciation of their music? I was actually proud when my 9 yr old niece and 11 yr old nephew asked for MUSE on their iPods... I didn't care where they heard it... hearing the things like that compared to other stuff on the radio will eventually give them an appreciation of music they would not have had a band as great as MUSE weren't on a soundtrack. I'm sorry but those fans need to get a grip. Look on the bright side a little. If the band is happy with it, why don't they complain to them or stop listening!?!?!

I became a fan of Muse BECAUSE of twilight! Their albums are amazing and very musically complex. Muse is playing at Giants Stadium and I am very disappointed that it's sold out!

Bands live to play music... why should the fans be so concerned about them getting a bigger fan base? I would be proud.
I also hate how people judge things by who reads them and if they are a hit or not. Just because it's not your cup of tea or millions of pre-teen (and up) girls and boys read/watch it doesn't mean it's stupid. Most of the people making bad remarks, I can guarantee you, complain about illiteracy and poor grammar, well every book one reads improves their grammar skills. It's really pathetic.

More importantly, why are so many people being so judgemental? What difference does it make if Muse gained more fans because of Twilight? What's with the whole "I was a fan first" thing. So childish. Who cares? Jasper says relax. :)

I don't have a song nomination, but I do have a few thoughts to share: One of the great things about the Twilight saga is that it has managed to bridge gaps and make connections. I understand what Muse only (not Twilight) fans are saying, but it does seem trivial in the big picture. Twilight has introduced new music genres to people the world over, who otherwise may have missed out. Twilight has also opened discussions between generations young and old. Some people are quick to judge, criticize and complain when it comes to Twilight. It's quite ridiculous.

If they were true fans, they would be happy that Muse is getting such huge exposure. Sure it sucks when a band you like is affiliated with something you don't, but be happy for them.

It's really pathetic speaking for myself I was a Muse fan way before I even knew the twilight books existed and yes I am a huge fan of the twilight franchis. They need to grow up and stop trash talking because Muse agreed to do the twilight soundtrack. Oh and by the way.....NO ONE CARES THAT YOUR AN ATHEIST AND PREYED TO GOD FOR MUSE TO STAY OFF THE SOUNDTRACK. IT ONLY SHOWS THAT YOUR A DRAMATIC HATER!

It's ridiculous all these people crying and complaining because Muse was included on the Twilight Soundtrack. I think any band is created for an only purpose: to be known!
Then these "fans" don't understand any reason because they think that the band is exclusive to them, that's a stupid way of thinking.
I'm museaholic, I don't know only SMBH, but if Muse is happy participating on the Twilight Saga Soundtrack, I'm happy too!
    Who cares?

I think it is super rediculous that these "Fans" are blaming the Twilight fans for Muse being on the soundtrack, the band is perfectly able to make their own desicions, just because Twilight fans want them on the soundtrack doesnt mean that that is the only reason they are willing to be on the soundtrack. For all the Muse "Fans" perhaps Muse themselves like Twilight, why should they be so upset over them being on a soundtrack, its music and its universal. Muse doesnt only make music for one set of fans. They make music for the art and they love of the music. Please get off your high horse and be appriciative that Muse is even alive and kicking! geeze, i think this has been blown WAY out of proportion!

Hey Amanda. I had never heard of Muse before the Twilight movie and I loved their song for the movie. But I also love the whole soundtrack for what it is... a chance to hear a variety of music that is out there. If you read this post check out this band www.fairchildrocks.com and tell me what you think of the song "Don't Say Good-bye". I think it would be great for when Edward leaves. By the way, I am a 43 year old mother of two boys who loves music and am looking forward to the new soundtrack.

I too think that Muse should be on the soundtrack to New Moon and the other two movies because Meyer basically used them to help her out of her writers block and if it weren't for them we would have no Edward, Bella or Jacob to dream about. Now would we.

Original Muse fans should get a grip and stop being so stuffy about people with different likes and dislikes enjoying music by "their" band... I'm sure Muse appreciate the publicity and the fact that it's opened up a whole new league of people to their music...

I find it hilarious that Muse fans are so offended. Clearly it was the band's choice to be on the albums and I'm sure that they are not upset about all the extra money they're making from Twilight fans. The comment about the band's "epicness" was particularly amusing; you know that some obsessed 13 year old wrote that. In the end, the band is trying to market themselves and make money and they have succeeded, so get over yourselves and your pathetic need to feel superior to others because you knew of them before they hit it big.

I admit I hadn't heard of Muse until I read Stephenie's (many) acknowledgments, and eventually heard the soundtrack. It broadened my horizons, musically, and I've started attaching 'play lists' to my own writing.

Trust me, I'm sure Muse isn't a big snob about who's spending money on their latest CD, even if their fans are!

If this is the reaction from the Muse fans, imagine the backlash from the Radiohead fanbase....

I'm a Muse fan who was introduced to the band through Stephanie Meyer's playlists for the books, I didn't just listen to SMBH and automatically call myself a Muse fan. I bought all their albums + I went and saw them live in 2007, and 2 years down the track I can safely say that I like the band more than I liked the books. I think all this negativity towards Muse being affliated with the series comes from the idiot fanbase of the movies and books, who throw themselves at the actors at comic con etc and the Twilight fans who call themselves Muse fans after only listening to SMBH. Hopefully a few years down the track when the pre-teen fanbase has grown up, they'll go back and look through Muse's catalogue and appreciate their music for its sound, not it's affiliation with a teen flick.

That being said, I always thought they should use Time Is Running Out in New Moon.

Some of them even came up with comments like how embarrassing it will be to be in Muse's concert along with Twifans. When Muse have no problem to be in NM soundtrack as they were in Twilight, I don't understand why their fans would think that they're above everything and probably too cool to be related to anything Twilight. This bands knows what they're getting themselves into, more exposure, broader range of fans. It's a good thing. I think their fans should stop being selfish and grow up already. All the comments in this article just shows how immature they are. Which begs the question, in what way do they think they are better than Twilight fans?

  • Maria 2 years ago

Well, maybe I'm not the best one to give and opinion since I've been a fan of Muse way, way before I even heard of Twilight and obviously being a fan of both I'd love them to be on the soundtrack again.

I can understand the fans point of view though, but they need to remember that Muse wouldn't be on a soundtrack if they didn't want to be on it, it's their choice.

Yes, the ne 'fans' because of Twilight are annoying, even I think that, but it's the same when a band has a hit single on the radio. Then there are lot's of 'fans' who only know one song too, this is no different.

For some reason, people like to define themselves through their choice of music, books, etc. Muse fans wanted to feel 'exclusive' and special; now they have to share, and are upset. They should realize that all of us are influenced by others. Muse fans arent as 'exclusive' as they thought they were.

It's nice to hear that Radiohead is involved again, maybe the song that's used in the movie will actually make it to the soundtrack this time? Their song 15 Steps is played as the credits begin at the end of Twilight, which made me deliriously happy as I love that album (Rainbows) and am a big Radiohead fan. But then...no soundtrack credit.
And I'm glad Muse will be returning as well.

*sigh* Honestly. No one group of people owns the band. It's their own decision to be on a soundtrack or not. And who cares if they are? It's not like people are only going to think of them as "that group that was in Twilight." Ugh, honestly.

And you know, I saw some similar rude comments when Paramore was still considering being on the soundtrack. It's so stupid. The band can decide what they want to do, and it doesn't matter if you like the subject matter or not. *sigh*

I too started listening to Muse because I started listening to the playlists on Stephanie's site. However, I fell in LOVE with them, Twilight or no Twilight. I was actually told I would love them YEARS before I'd even heard of Twilight but just never got around to buying the album. I think their music is a little sophisticated for the "idea" of the Twilight Saga, but the emotions the music evokes totally parallels the emotions the books bring out. In my opinion, anyway.

And saying that, I think as great as Time is Running Out would be, I hope they use Unintended for the soundtrack. Stephanie has said in interviews there were some story lines taken directly from Muse songs and put in to New Moon and if the whole Jacob/Bella thing didn't come at least partially from that song, I'd be shocked. Read the lyrics. I think it's perfect for right when Bella is about to give in and try to love Jacob and put Edward behind her. Seriously... read the lyrics.
