It's been a terribly fun ride waiting for that seemingly inevitable moment when The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn will go from "optioned property" to a full-on greenlit production.
Even before The Twilight Saga: New Moon was really near its theatrical release, fans were pressing for New Moon director Chris Weitz to sign onto direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Before that, fans were even picking out Bella's wedding dress from a crop of mock-up designs done by big-named fashion designers for InStyle. That's, of course, after plugging through some fan-made film posters and vehemently protesting against the notion of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ending on a Breaking Dawn-type note.
The actors, on the other hand, have been throwing around their own opinions on the matter. For instance, Jamie Campbell Bower put forth his opinion that Alice In Wonderland director Tim Burton would do a great job with Breaking Dawn, and he was later backed by New Moon co-star Ashley Greene. Meanwhile, Robert Pattinson vetted Gus Van Sant for the post.
Also, there've been rumors abounding (unconfirmed, of course) that Portland, Oregon (locale for Twilight's production) is being sniffed out as a possible filming location for Breaking Dawn.
And no one’s forgotten about the good old days when Boo Boo Stewart – who was only just announced as The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’s newest cast mate – made a “premature” statement about his Twilight contract, saying he was signed on for the next “three” films. Of course, the smallest bit of arithmetic led fans to believe that his statements meant that The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn would become two films in and of itself. Summit Entertainment quickly responded, dispelling the rumors as way ahead of the game, and the film’s status has remained an un-greenlit option property even since.
Now (with The Twilight Saga: New Moon absolutely wrecking Hollywood expectations with near insane opening day intake) the words of Twilight saga producer Bill Bannerman ring loud and clear.
Assuming The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s opening weekend intake is enough to spark the Breaking Dawn fire (officially), the question lingers still: should it be one film or two?
Of course, the opinion of Twilight saga author Stephenie Meyer matters more than most (if not all), and she has stated quite clearly that she thinks it’ll have to be two films, but what do the fans think?
With a quick poll on Facebook, about 450 scattered results came in. Some say Breaking Dawn should be two, while many others stand firm at the call for a single, comprehensive and lengthy film. On Twitter, the results were mostly the same - though slightly leaning more toward the two-film option.
[Warning: This post contains some spoilers about Breaking Dawn]
Ali Bernard, Twilight fan since 2008, states that it should be one – but that if each Harry Potter film can be three hours, so should The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. She thinks that, to make the 754-page story small enough to fit into a singular film, certain portions could be removed. “If they decided to make it into one, I think the parts that could be deleted would be some of the long chapters of where Jacob is constantly fighting with Bella and Edward about how he hates the baby. For the book it is great, but in a movie it would just be too much of the same situation.”
She does, however, contend that other portions of the story might deserve a lengthier showing in a Breaking Dawn film version. Says she, “I think they should extend the scenes where Bella is a vampire because we don't get to see her as a vampire for too long. It would also be nice to see how Jacob's affection toward Renesmee goes.”
Other fans, like Kimmy West who runs HisGoldenEyes.com, think it’d be well-suited for two films.
“I think that Breaking Dawn should be two films, since the author thinks that it should be,” she says. “However, I also think that Breaking Dawn is not a novel that is impossible to fit into a single film.”
West breaks down the one film/two film (red film/blue film . . heh) dilemma really nicely. “The problem with having two films is that they could become a little bit confusing since the timeline would be split, and the problem with having one would be that it could seem rushed because of the length of the book.”
However, West also has some idea of how the story could be split into two. “If the novel was made as two films then I think a good point for the split would either be directly before or directly after the birth. Or maybe, similar to the cliffhanger in New Moon, it could end on Jacob's face as he was imprinting on Renesmee. That could confuse those people who haven't read the saga but would be a pretty exciting way to end it for the fans of the series!” West’s idea is that, in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, there could be some visible look or expression made by the wolfpack members as they experience the imprinting process. By cutting into Jacob’s face as he exhibits that same affliction, she says, there could actually be a cliffhanger and great segue into a second portion.
Others, like Heather Weaver – who’s been a Twilight fan since 2006 and runs Club Twilight and Bella Twilight Shop – have their own opinions on how Breaking Dawn could be a successful two-part film. She states that she’d be comfortable with a post-birth and post-transformation split which left the second film all to battle preparations and the big stand-off. If the film split were approached this way, it would certainly lend more time to Bella as a vampire, as Bernard requests, as well as give plenty of time to some of the brand new characters that come about in Breaking Dawn.
Nevertheless, again, fan opinion is pretty across the board, and it remains to be seen what the Twilight film studio will decide to do with it.
However, as is clearly noticeable with the way that The Twilight Saga: New Moon turned out, the opinions of Twilight fans are not disregarded - not by a long shot. So, be sure and leave your thoughts in the comments below! Meanwhile, we continue to wait . . .

I will not go to two films about Breaking Dawn. Jacob's Book in the middle can be honed down a lot and it would save me from having to leave the theatre when it was being shown. One freakin' movie...three hours I don't care BUT not two films, PULEEEEEASE!!!
i agree with the person that said let's have it be 300 hours long like harry potter was.. who cares how long it is; just don't make us have to pay for two separate movies of ONE movie.. when it could all just be put into one movie; it'll just be longer than the others. i'll sit through it; the twilight saga is amazing!! but i don't wanna have to leave one movie && go sit through the other.. that's kinda ridiculous. i agree; jacob's book could definitely be cut down a lot.. about him fighting with bella && edward about the baby; is that all really that necessarily to put all that info into a movie?! just cut some parts out. make it shorter when the movie actually films.
No Chris Weitz. He destroyed the "love" of Bella and Edward in New Moon. I can not beleive how bad it was done.. minus the CGI, He is not the guy to bring these novels to conclusion.
How can any fan NOT see Breaking Dawn, wether it's two films or one? I don't really care too much wether or not they split it in two, I just want to see it no matter what! Any true fan will be happy to see it and wait to judge it till it's done.
I too believe that Breaking Dawn HAS TO be made! As for 1 or 2 movies...that really depends on how good the screen writer is. But what I do think has to be in it is: The wedding! The honeymoon! The pregnancy (however I think alot of the Leah and Jacob parts can be removed). The birth is a yes and a long part with Bella being a vampire would be nice. As well as ALOT of scenes with Bella, Edward and Renesme together. The fight (confrontation I should say.) Oh and the cottage please!!
I just don't know when if they can fit that into 1 movie. If two is what is needed then I agree with the ending of movie 1 being right after Jacob imprints or Bella wakes up.
I love the books and the movies...I just wish more dialog of the book can make it into the movies...so if 2 movies are made for Breaking Dawn then I will get my wish :)
I think it should be 2 3 hour movies, include in the first film the engagement and the wedding as well as the honey moon and the birth, and in the second imprint, battles and the rest.
I deffinatly think that it should be 2 movies. There is just so much to capture in this book. It's all so important and i feel that nothing should really be left out. Bella as a vampire i hope is played out a bit longer in the movie also. I also think that the first movie should end before bella wakes up a vampire! but thats just my opinion
I think the book is too long and has too much information to try and make into just one film, the would cut too much stuff. I was just thinking the other day that the first movie should be cut just after the birth and I like the idea of West showing JAcob's face last as he sees Renesmee :D
I think it should just be one long movie. I wouldn't mind sitting for a long time just to see how this ends & it would be less confuseing if it were just one movie.
If Breaking Dawn should be made in two movies, I think that it would be good if the first one ended after the birth, and when Edward says "Renesmee". (:
I felt New Moon's story was rushed, and also agree that the bond of Bella and Edward did not cme trhough on screen. The wolf graphics were perfect! But the romantic aspect was lacking and the film was way too short or missing too many parts of the book to lead up to their ending... The actors did their best but I would perfer another director please!
I think Breaking Dawn should definitely be done in two movies and the split should happen somewhere around the pregnancy or birth. I think it would set things up well for the second one to be focusing on both Bella's change and the Voltori coming because of Reneesme.
The only thing that would seriously bother me about breaking dawn would be cutting bits out that i really enjoyed to try and make it 1 film as opposed to 2. For example the relationship (or lack thereof!) between Jacob and Rosalie. I found these parts of the book brilliantly funny. Ill never forget the bit where she serves Jacobs dinner in a dog bowl she'd shaped out of a stainless steel mixing bowl with 'FIDO' scratched in the side. In amoungst all the edge of your seat drama and action of the final installment its good to see the lighter side of the characters.Stephanie captured it beautifully withe quick bits of humor, it would be criminal to cut out scenes like this just to try and shorten the film to 1.
Its got to be two...If Summit want to make the most of this massive franchise and not cut the viewers short then they need to do the book justice.
Slight preference for 2 films, but I'd be fine with 1 long film or MAYBE even 1 two-hour film as long as they have a good script and get the right director. If the studio wants to negotiate with Rob and Kristen to sign on for a second Breaking Dawn, hopefully they realize that we are a VERY loyal fanbase who will turn out opening weekend and can be counted on to turn out impressive box office numbers.
Just make the movie!!! even if it`s 1,2 or even 3! it colud also be like 5-6 hours long, I don`t really care as long as I can see it!;)There are not really many parts a director could take away from the book(besides all the crap about Leah and Jacob..and Maby a lot of Jacob, but stephenie wrote the book that way,so she`ll have to decide what dosn`t HAVE to be in the movie..it was her dream in the first place), and if Kirsten dosn`t want to play Bella-I`d do it in a heartbeat, and the we would REALLY feel the love!*LOL* anyway, I Loved New Moon, but aslo felt it was kinda rushed..and too little Edward...CW could have left out other parts, to make time for the luuuuve, but I think he did great anyhow, The wolfs were great!! and may I say, I`m even more Robsessed now...*sigh* ...can`t wait for Eclipse and Breaking Dawn...(and Stephenie...PLEASE,for the love of god..or you`r fans or what ever it takes, write more books, I want to know..I Need to know what happends to the little family;))
reality check - none of the major players are going to walk away. i'm sure all of them were told to keep most of 2010 open for the inevitable. as for one or two films, i strongly believe you can do this and do it effectively (keyword) in 1 long 3+hr film but knowing summit, they'll probably do it in 2.
[spoiler]
i did this a few months ago. what do you guys think, would this seem effective or too sped up for BD? times can be stretched/shrunk according to what you'd like to focus more on but this IS the general outline of BD and shows it can be done in one movie. i chose to give the pregnancy and vampire bella about an hour each of screen time.
0:00-0:20 - lead up to wedding
0:20-0:35 - wedding
0:35-1:05 - honeymoon
1:05-2:05 - pregnancy
2:05-3:00 - vampire Bella / lead up to Volturi
3:00-3:30 - Volturi showdown / happily ever after

Breaking Dawn is best fitted for two films. The novel itself has life changing events in three parts, each with thier grossly important plots cannot be fitted into a singular film. I have to strongly say that the the events of Bella and Jacob and the Volturi is all too much for one movie, considering the thousands who choose not to read the Saga.
The perfect cliff hanger for Breaking Dawn is when Bella drifts into darkness, leving a highly effective and emotional beginning of pain and powerful ecstacy in the second Part of the film then continuing on to tell the story of the clan and the Volturi...
Unlike Harry Potter, Twilight's Breaking Dawn can very easily and efficiently be cut right down in the middle, where the climax takes place leaving everyone in suspicion and wonder... wanting to see more. Considering that two movies focusing on the significantly different life changes is perfect, the only condition would be that the release between the two is not of great length!!!
So how do we contact Summit to let them know to continue with Breaking Dawn and who should direct it.
I know who I DO NOT want to Tim Burton.
I was smiling when I saw one of the people you quoted thought the same exact thing I have thought: that the perfect place to end BD Part 1 would be on Jacob as he imprinted on Renesmee. Start BD Part 2 with Bella's painful transformation -- you could do things like flashbacks of Part 1 while she's in that 3-day hell to bring moviegoers up to date.
Either way, BD is a HUGE book, and one film would surely leave out too many important things. It needs to be 2 parts. If Harry Potter could break a big book into 2 movies, so can Summit with BD.
I would prefer if Breaking Dawn were in one long movie. As long as nothing major is cut out though. I DO NOT want Tim Burton to direct. He would totally ruin the movie for me. I loved New Moon and SO want Chris to direct. Even Kristen said she wanted him to do the final film. I feel comfortable that he would stay true to the book and could handle the difficulties.
breakin dawn should be two films. theres no way a movie would do the book right and make fans happy if it were one. it would be rushed like twilight was. and wouldnt end up being as big as it could be. i think the perfect way to do it is just how the book does. the first one should be jacobs side of things made in to a two hour movie and the 2nd should be bellas. and deff have more of her as a vamp cuz that is of course what we have all been waiting on for years. my only things is that if they spit it in to two films they really should film it al lat once(like the 7th harry potter film) and release them very close together. like 4 or 5 months apart. dont do what happy potter is doing and making people wait a hole nother year to see the sencond half. if it is made in to one movie how ever it really should be a little over 3 hours. id pay any amount of money to see it no matter what. but i think to really do it right it needs to be 2.
Defiantly TWO films, we would lose so many details of the book if not, and I don't think any of us want that. BD needs to end Epic! No rushing. I loved NM BUT some of the best dialogue was rushed, we Twi fans will spend our money but we want our Saga finished the correct way. :)
It should be TWO movies and I really like the idea of the first Breaking Dawn movie ending on Jacob imprinting on Renesemee. I would like to see more of Bella as a Vampire also. I DO NOT WANT TIM BURTON AS THE DIRECTOR!!! I think Chris Weitz did a Great job on NEW MOON! He would be my choice. ALSO both movies need to be made back to back so we only have to waiy 6 MONTHS for the next movie and NOT a year!!!
i defentaly think it should be ONE long film, like the Harry Potters. i think having to films would just be a hastle, going to see one movie and then having to go back and buy anthor movie, and there is really no way you can fit all the important things in a two hour movie
i alos want to see more of bella as a vampire. in the book you dont really get to read a lot about bella as a vampire and that was my favorite part
TIM BURTON SHOULD NOT BE THE DIRECTOR!!!! christ wielz did a WONDERFUL job on new moon and i think he should stay the director
I definately think Breaking dawn should be made into two films there would be so much information and great story missed out it would be a mistake to even think it could be made into one film!!!! And Tim Burton should stay away from this production it would be made into a farce.
I agree, I think Chris Weitz should direct BD. So what are Twilight fans going to do for the next 7 months until Eclipse comes out?
I just hope they make breaking dawn and that it will be good
I think Chris Weitz should direct BD,, he did an awesome job on New Moon..so he will defintaly do a good job on BD. I also think that BD should be 2 films,, a single film would be too rushed.. the film would be completly diffrent from the book ( too many parts woould be left out). They could leave it at a cliffhanger were Jacob imprints on Reneesme or were Bella opens here eyes as a new born.
I think it would be great to have it split in 2 films. Firstly it would allow the story to remain as true to its original as possible. It is a long book, why stick with a summary of chapters just to fit it all in and risk losing the small details we love? Secondly, I don't want the Saga to end!! It is so sad that we only have four books so to see the books have become movies to get me all excited again is fantastic. If this now means we can perhaps have another three movies instead of 2 to look forward to, I'm all up for it!
TWO films for me, WHO DOESNT WANT MORE?
and i would really like to see more vampire bella, and more volturi... remember they hinted that if this whole series was successful, they may go forward with a volturi sequel...
so yeah, i could stand to see this world played out on screen,
for years and years to come....
this is the first time women have something they really enjoy and that we've single handedly supported every inch of the way...
as for tim burton, hell no! this isnt a macabre fantasy, maybe men dont take it seriously, but burton would make a sick joke out of it...
I think it should def be two.
They need to end the first one with Jacob seeing Reneesme for the first time. This is how it should be played out in my mind to end the first movie:
Jacob going up the stairs, then you see him looking and seeing Rosalie standing by the window holding Reneesme. Close up shot of Reneesme opening her eyes to see the chocholate brown eyes she in herited from Bella, then cut to a close up shot of Jacob.
I'd certainly sit through one long film (as in LOTR) and I'd like to see Chris Weitz work with his brother Paul (director of The Vampire's Assistant). Combined, they have the skills and vision to deliver the perfect wedding day and all the action of the last third of Breaking Dawn.
Two films. I bet my next paycheck that they will greenlight it AFTER Eclipse is released to see if the fans prefer Chris Weitz or David Slade and then they will decide. They will also have to figure out respective bedgets between one or two films. Also, it seems Melissa Rosenberg is out of the pic right now, so maybe they are looking for someone else to wrtie the script(s). And it will take a while to cast all of the new supporting characters for BD.
I think one very long movie would be fine. You know with an intermission; think Gone with the Wind (+-4 hours). That way we can do it all in one sitting and buy one DVD set instead of making us WAIT 6-12 months for part two.
As for content? Most of what happens when Bella is pregnant could easily be dumped. They get married, they go on a honeymooon, she gets pregnant and really sick, the warewolves break up and the second pack starts protecting the Cullens (come on now 30 minutes max), she gives birth... and intermission (I'm liking the break there as well).
Then the entire second half is Bella as a vampire. They start preparing for the Volturri, then the stand off. All's I know is that they better give up some time for Happily Ever After because it's the only time in the entire series that Edward is happy and I really want to see that.
One more thing... the sheild retraction better be in BD just like the leg hitch better be in Eclipse.
I like the idea of a two-part film ending with the imprinting as stated above by West. There's a conflict with Jacob hating Bella's baby, but a resolve/cliffhanger at the end. And then for a second film there's another conflict obviously with the Volturi.
I also want to add that they should film both parts (if they do split it into two) at the same time and release them similarly to New Moon and Eclipse, meaning a short waiting period for each film.
I think it should be two...I like the idea of ending the 1st after the change and beginning the 2nd after the change bc that would give more time for the prep for battle and get to know the whole new cast a little bit better.
Oh, and I definitely don't want Tim Burton!!! Actually, I think Jacob imprinting would be a good place to end it...either way, there needs to be two movies.
While there are ton of wonderful points made on the side of what the fans want and ultimately what Stephanie wants, my question remains with the actors. If any of the main 3 actors want to move on with their careers {given the fact they have been immersed in the Twilight world for a couple years now} then I would say they would make BD one movie.
Now, if Summit had them sign contracts stating that they are in it until the series finishes despite the number of movies, then that becomes a mute point. But say it does go to 5 films and the actors are burnt out by that point. What would become of the quality of say the 5th film.
Honestly, I see BD as one, crammed in, parts left out, but yet a wonderful tie out to the series. Unless Summit is truly the money hungry company, then they will milk it through a 5th film with burnt out actors IMO.
I don't mind if it is two movies or one long movie. i don't understand why they didn't have twilight or new moon longer than 2 hrs. i would have enjoyed it a whole lot more if it was 4 hrs. look at how long Casino was. i heard Eclipse was only 2 hrs and some change. there is alot that goes on during that book so yeh.
excited for Breaking Dawn!
I like a TWO part Breaking Dawn....
Film it like they did the Pirate movies...
(Filming both parts, at the same time...)
I also like the suggestion of the break being when Bella changes..Renesseme is born and then CUT!
That will bring everyone back the next time...
Tim Burton...not really feeling that...
(It will be a joke..Besides he's doing Dark Shadows)
David Slade...I am sure he will be great for Eclipse..
(but Breaking Dawn? NAW...not so much..no real carnage for him )
Chris Weitz ...
Need someone stronger to make a more compelling film...
(I'm a big fan...but New Moon was a bit weak...)
CGI and the wolf pack were excellent!
HEY!!! How about Gore Verbinski???
He doesn't seem to be too busy and KNOWS how to handle action... love triangles ... CGI....and TWO part movies!
(He might want a lot of money...and he doesn't need the work..)
Still???
One long film but we need more of what was lacking in new moon to make it a good movie - back story and fill in the certain parts so it doesn't feel like we are watching a bunch of scenes. I realize that this is Bella's POV in the books but sometimes you need a little extra in the movie and that is what made new moon choppy! Otherwise it was great seeing it on screen!
I like the idea of two films for Breaking Dawn, is the most important book of the Saga ... but filmed at once, as is being done with Harry Potter "The Deathly Hallows". Would that it were made the cut in the birth of Renesmee or the imprint of Jacob. There are many actors to be hired because of so many vampire allies.
About the likely director, have not seen anything official from Eclipse, do not know how David Slade made the romantic part of the film ... Breaking Dawn is dawn is light ... I think it has to be a director more expansive ... I like the idea of Chris Weitz again, but I do not believe that the Summit will want, so I agree with Robert: Gus Van Sant - who knows not a Saga an Oscar nomination. Tim Burton, please do not, it's crazy too.
I definitely think Breaking Dawn needs to be two movies. The wedding, the honeymoon and Bella becoming pregnant and the wolves trying to kill her and Jacob imprinting on Reneesme would be plenty for 1 movie. The the other half would be Bella as a vampire, learning to hunt, Edward and Bella living in their cottage and the Irina and the witness, Alice and Jasper leaving, Jacob,Seth and Leah and all the Volturi stuff.. I mean that would be plenty for #2 and PLEASE OH PLEASE DON'T CGI RENEESME...that would be dumb..
Although I would see 2 films, I think it should only be one, and I agree that most of the pregnancy stuff could be cut and I would be most interested in seeing Bella as a vampire. Either way we don't have to worry about the actors getting burnt out or aging b/c it would be easiest to film BD as a whole all at one time, and then if the studio wants to they can edit it into 2 movies. And it seems to me that they are already planning to film BD in September in Portland, or at least that's what Rob keeps saying in interviews. I hope Melissa Rossenberg doesn't do the script...a new writer would be refreshing. But I don't think I'll get that wish.
I don't think they should re-use any of the directors. Gus Van Sant sounds ok to me.
I think that Chris Weitz should do it. All the actors seem to mesh really well with his calm demenor. (I'm a bad speller) One long one or two doesn't matter, but I with what someone said earlier about showing some stuff with the other characters. Like the conversation between Jake and Leah about her being a genetic dead end. Also the arm wrestling match between Bella and Emmett. Gotta see it. Then little Renessmee trying to break the rock. The scene between Bella and J Jenks. I could go on and on. The main thing is IT HAS TO BE MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love for Breaking dawn to be made into 2 movies! I was a book fan before the movies. And of course everyone has their own opinions, but Breaking Dawn was such a Great book I want that to be able to be said about the movies. There are so many little details that would be cut out of it if only one movie was made. Now don't get me wrong I loved New Moon! Sat in a theatre 3 hours waiting, but the movie itself felt a bit rushed. The effects were great, the love/friendship conflict between Bella and Jacob was also good. But I felt major parts were left out for time sake.( the whole birthday cd, he gives her, then how she notices it is all gone, like he was never really there. that part broke my heart in the book, but missing in movie). I also know not every little detail can be in the movie lol . So all I ask is plz dont overlook the little parts of the book that has helped the whole Twilight Saga be where it is at now!
