How 'New Moon's flittering images of Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen might work

Since the recent news about the "flittering images" of Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen we Twilight fans might expect to see in New Moon, questions have been abounding as to how Edward Cullen's character can come across the screen throughout the film in these images and yet the film (directed by Chris Weitz and starring Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner) might still remain faithful to Stephenie Meyer's wonderful book.

As we have seen, fans have laid out a number of expectations for New Moon's scenes that would qualify it as a true book-to-film presentation of Meyer's best-selling and much-adored work - see here. During that conversation, there was much back and forth as to whether Pattinson's character ,Edward Cullen, should have more scenes throughout the book. Those opposed to the idea say that the appeal of New Moon the book owes in large part to its crushing deprivation of Edward from Bella (and thus, the audience)'s life, and the derision that grows between Jacob Black and Edward as a consequence - not to mention, the glorious reconciliation that we get to see in the ending. Proponents of Edward's being a bigger part of the film, basically, say that book essence aside, Edward Cullen is a character that they want to see more of, no matter the cost.

The news about Edward's appearance throughout the film as a "flittering image," however, might promise a happy compromise between the competing interests of these fans.

How?

There are a number of possibilities. For starters, we know that Bella (Kristen Stewart) is expected to experience hallucinations throughout the whole film. Resulting as a consequence of her thrill-seeking behavior, Bella is to resort to dangerous tasks in order to summon up an audio memory of her beloved Edward's warning and protective voice. Perhaps, the director will use this opportunity to present these visions of Edward. Instead of a voice, they might present a vision of him. Or, maybe, alongside the voice, Bella could remember those piercing gold eyes or that crooked smile we all love.

Another way, of course, is to show Edward experiencing his hell in South American absence of Bella, a fact of whch book-readers were not aware in the first read-through of New Moon. While some say that this would deprive the movie-viewer of some of the power of New Moon, if done appropriately, perhaps some of the book could be preserved still. For instance, if we saw Edward in motion in South America, but did not know of his misery (i.e., by keeping him busy, or by not revealing long scenes of him there), perhaps the mystery and suspense, too, would be saved.

A third possibility would, of course, be with dream sequences or simple memories, not associated with known aspects of the book. One idea would be for Bella to remember Edward of her own accord, without the danger-stimuli, on various occasions throughout her suffering. This could actually be done fairly artistically, if, say, those images were to shorten and become fewer and farther between as her relationship with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) grows throughout the story. Done improperly, though, this could lead to deviance of too lengthy a measure from the novel, which would, of course, defeat the purpose.

What do you think? Are there other ways that these "flittering images" of Rob as Edward could be done in sufficient accordance with the book? Comment below with your thoughts!

I don't think flittering images would destroy the movie but I still like the idea of just hearing his voice because even Bella admits that she can never remember him correctly. Maybe he could be a blurry sort of image to account for that?

I am a big fan of all the Twilight Sagas, and personally I think that just hearing his voice would make it happen.(True to book) The end of the movie would been more intense. I understand people want to see more "Edward" but Stephenie deserves that much.

Bring on the "flittering images" of rats, the wallowing, hiding in dark dingy rafters, tracking Victoria whilst huddled in a fetal position in garbage scows... then running only to suddenly stop and hold himself together like Bella does and slip slowly down wherever he is and just stay there as time passes... night, day, rain, snow, sleet, hail beat on his body. I prefer seeing what some of the things Edward goes through. I want to see him suffer way, way worst than Bella coz it was his decision to leave in the first place. So I say bring on Edward's misery. Cool!

Perhaps with the Dream/memories idea CW can encompass more of the love Bella and Edward were truly lacking in the Twilight movie. You know, memories of all the good stuff. We don't want to know how much Edward is suffering while beign away from Bella. For the fans of the movie, if they see more of the love they shared, they will have a better idea why Bella is hurting so much.

Listen...This book is about bella and Jacob...putting edward in it more just so people can see more of rob is dumb! It will ruin the movie. Out of the series this is my favorite book. If people truly love these books they would want the movie to portray the book as much as possible....If you need a rob fixing go see little ashes.

I really think that showing him in the movie would take away from the impact of seeing him in Italy. I think that they should show a little bit of Edward through Bella's memories of him, but nothing that we havent seen before. I also hope that the hallucinations are done correctly, because it is so important that she hears his voice but doesnt see him!

Do not add Edward to more of the story, but lengthen out the beginning before he leaves, and lengthen out the end when he returns. He should not be present during the middle. BUT- make the middle not as long as it was in the book. That way we see more Edward, but still stay true to the storyline.

I agree with Michelle I think that diving deeper into the bond that Bella and Edward shared would be a good way to keep the balance in Edward's absence. I can't see anything wrong with adding these sequences as dreams or simply memories that Bella experiences. And seeing his face when he is "talking" to her would be a great way to keep team Edward happy throughout this difficult film. I think that we will sympathize with her devastation more if we get a deeper connection between the two then what was in Twilight. Don't get me wrong Twilight was a great movie, but I didn't feel like it completely captured the intensity of Edward and Bella's love like the book did. I think that CW needs to remember that although New Moon is still a great book, it is ranked as the least favorite in the entire series and that is due mostly to the absence of Edward. Maybe we don't need to see how much misery Edward is in since the story really is suppose to be from Bella's perspective and therefore should focus on her grieving and healing process. I don't know, I hope that this one is as well received as Twilight and even if it's not I hope they continue through to the end with the films because it is such a fantastic series. I wish that Stephanie would write more books about Edward and Bella!!!

I like the first idea the best. When I heard "flittering images", I thought of it like this: Bella's standing on the cliff, steps forward to the edge, her eyes are closed and we see Edward come up behind her and whisper in her ear ("Bella, don't do this"), she smiles, we see a wide shot and he's gone, she jumps.

This way WE still see him, but it can be manipulated in film so that she doesn't see him and he's not really there.

I agree with the above comment, just dont make the middle so long and have some filtering images in there, and New Moon yes is about Jacob and Bella's friendship BUT its also about Bella's pain of losing her TRUE love and losing herself when hes gone. I honestly dont wanna see Jacob black and Bella on a motorcycle for 90% of the movie. JMO..:-)

Mina good point, Edward does leave her and it's important the fans experience something from his side. As in Midnight Sun, after reading what is available it lends soooooo much more to Twilight and deeper insite if you will. I also agree make the middle with Jacob a little shorter after all Bella doesn't think she loves him, and they don't have a relationship as such. I enjoy watching Taylor but parts of New Moon were SO boring, (for me anyhow) I hope I don't have to fast forward on the DVD when it comes out. Flitter some, but let us see His pain

I would like to see Edward's misery added. It was his decision to leave Bella and adding that perspective to the movie would tell the whole story. New Moon was told from Bella's point-of-view, let's get the other side...I'd like to see the pain he goes through.

I could definately see flash backs, just flittering images of him as she hears his voice. I also like a comment from someone saying as she was about to jump she could close her eyes and picture him wispering in her ear. I dont think there really needs to be parts of the film of him in S.A. tracking Victoria. Keep it simple. We all know that Bella's journey will be somewhat action packed as she heads towards Italy to save Edward. Certainly Robert will be in there enough to satisfy our thirst ;]

I personally love this book and I think that this movie should show how bellal's love with jacob grows with out her knowing it and how he is always there for her. Also how she suffers when he becomes one of the pack. Ofcourse I also love when she runs of with Alice to rescue her love Edward. and I also think that Edward should appear only when she is deep in the water and start's searching for him in her head and screams in her head that she loves him.

I think the flittering images is a good idea because it would put more Edward in the movie, and the part of Edward in misery is a good idea too but like it said in the article the dreams might be a little too much and they should stick more with the way it is in the book. His voice is in the book, it would be good to have some visual effect of Edward and the fact that he suffers is in the book because he says it himself. They should pick one idea and make it work the best they can.

When I learned that they were planning on making Edward a larger part of "New Moon" I had my reservations. I felt that seeing too much of him would ruin the sweetness and relief of Bella and Edward's reunion at the end. However, I loved the idea of small, surprising vignettes of Edward when Bella experiences her auditory hallucinations. I think it would be best to keep those flashes as short as possible. It will certainly induce massive heart palpitations for Twihards the world over.

The director would not be doing his job if he didn't include some way for Edwards voice to be heard when Bella has these hallucination. Thats the whole point of having them, we have to hear them too!
Seeing him will be too much although I wouldn't disapprove but then your swaying away from the books initial story again of how it is all portrayed.

THIS IS WAY I STRESS AGAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF HOW (MIDNIGHT SUN) SHOULD BE FINISHED. IT IS NOT FAIR TO PUNISH ALL THE FANS BECAUSE ONE PERSON ABUSED STEPHANIE'S TRUST..WE NEED EDWARDS STORY TOLD SO WE CAN UNDERSTAND HIS ANGLE ON THINGS PLEASE PLEASE FINISH THE BOOK!!!!

Definatly need to leave out the flittering images. Jacob is just as big a character of the books as edward, in twilight edward established his role and new moon gives jacob his chance, showing edward would ruin it. Besides, leaving him out will make the reunion better.

I totally agree to add scenes showing Edward's misery added, this would really be the heart-wrenching affirmation of his promises in Twilight. An apparition of Edward whenever she hears his voice SHOULD BE part of the movie because in a book, hearing and imagining his voice is OK, but needed to be projected on screen through an images of Edward (Robert). People are misleaded when they say to be true to the book, they need must include Edward in the movie. But that is totally false. Edward maybe absent physically, but he is not really. He is actually everywhere in the book--you read it, and Edward is there in the background each time you see Bella, because Bella's consciousness is Edward. So, the best way is to show Edward on those moments as apparition and I think that would not violate the physicality of the book.

what ever and how ever they shoot the movie, it should be as much as possible close to the book. And I think that the idea with flittering images might work. I don`t think that showing Edward in S. America would be good, cause that`s not part of S. Meyers book and so it won`t work for the movie. Dreamsequences might be a solution for 1 or 2 times, but Bella hears his voice much more times than this - so I think these flittering images will work best.

I like the idea of showing Edward when Bella is hearing his voice in her head. But I don't like the idea of showing him in South America because the suspense won't be the same as it was in the book. And as for Bella dreaming about him its a good idea but it also might take away some of the suspense.

I like the idea of seeing Edward as well as hearing him simply because I think it will come across clearer for the viewers this way. The best way to put more Edward in, though, is to make the part in Italy a much larger part of the book. Something always has to be left out when a novel goes to film. Shorten the minor pack characters and the La Push storyline, and make the Volturi a bigger part. I think this will help the greater appeal of the movie while not betraying the book.

Much as I love Rob, I'd really rather they just did the voice over. After all, if they do flittering images, then the cliff diving scene won't be as suspenseful kind of. Really, I think they just need to film it according to the book (and S. Meyer's opinion) and leave us to deal with less Rob. That'll make Italy all the better, y'know?

The elisa comment below makes sense...in New Moon, Edward does not exist physically, but he is certainly in Bella’s consciousness and he is certainly in the heart of the book. As readers, we project Bella’s consciousness in our thoughts and those thoughts MUST be projected on screen because we don't read the screen; we read pages of the book. Those thoughts are very much part of the essence of the story, so I don’t see any violation of originality here. Edward, though not physically present is certainly all over the book in essence, and there is no violation of originality if this essence is projected on screen. The idea of showing Edward’s suffering MUST be there. That is the gut of new moon --- suffering. And if we don’t see Edward’s heart-wrenching sorrow somewhere in there, the ending will not be that powerful.

Nooooo.....New Moon is actually my favorite book in the series and I think they need to stay as true as possible to the book. Don't get me wrong...there's nothing I would like better than to drool in my theater chair over Robert Pattinson for 2 hours - but - in the book Bella locked Edward away - not even saying his name until she was facing death. She only heard him. The idea of showing his misery in South America is interesting - but if they are going to do that....I want to see Esme restoring the historical house, Alice searching for her roots in Biloxi, etc etc. Yes the thought of not seeing Robert pains me - but it will make it all the more worth it when we get to the reunion scene in Volterra under the clock tower! Gah...I don't know....I want it both ways. Just make the movie 4 hours long to fit in the whole book not skipping anything and do what you want! LOL

I agree that CW needs to stick w/the book as much as possible. I would say that 90% of viewers will have read NM. SM has provided him with more than enough material to work with. He needs to be very very careful with adding things that weren't in the book. There were too many tangents in Twilight that did nothing for the storyline and, in fact, compromised the feel of the their developing relationship

When Bella hears Edward's voice in the book, I see his face. So, flittering images would be fine as long as it can be done w/o some of the cheesy, poorly-executed special effects in Twilight. CW doesn't need to have him track her to SA. They could, however, put in Rosalie's phone call to him where we see him sitting amongst rats, etc. That would lead into Italy well.

CW needs to not worry about the very small population of people who want more Pattinson in the movie. The rest of us know that he needs to be gone for us to feel the depth of Bella's pain and to feel the rush of emotions in Italy. Also, Eclipse will come out seven months later and we'll see more than enough of him then. His absence in NM is a necessary evil.

If CW and the screenwriter love and understand the book, they know how important it is to just stick with the book as much as they possibly can.

I think that if Edward is shown throughtout the movie it will loose the intensity of the reunion at the end of the book. We all loved the book version and what it made us feel so stop with the obsessive of seeing Rob only for satisfying that "eye-candy" need. The reconciliation and climax of the movie will loose its intensity if he's shown mopping around. We will go to the movies to see what Stephanie created not only Rob's looks.

I agree with those people who say here that the 2cond book is about Bella dealing with her pain at Edward's disappearance and her friendship with Jacob. Edward might be gone physically, but he is there in spirit through Bella and her pain. What could maybe have been with Jacob was shortcircuited the day she met Edward basically, wich is why I don't even really consider Jacob as a real contestant for Edward's place, even if he would like to be.

This is why I am not against Bella seeing and hearing Edward, it would make more sense to make things more visual in a movie, you can't read her feelings like in the book. I believe that Book's rules and movie's rules are different, and you can't simply transpose each scene of the book to the screen. As long as they deliver strong feelings (love, loss, pain, joy...) to the audience, that will be great (better than in the 1st hopefully).

I think flittering images is a good idea, to and extent. Showing him in S.A isn't such a good idea in my opinion because it could take away from the heartwarming feel the audience will get when we DO see him in Italy. However, showing Edward's face when Bella searches for him in her head as she drowns and says she loves him is a good way to go because, as I read, that's how I pictured it. CW should also consider showing Bella's memories of him for the short time after she returns to her room and collapses onto the floor in her misery. The only other way I think it would be okay is to show the phone call he recieves from Rosalie and the flickers Alice recieves in her visions as he changes his mind.

Even though we may have to suffer without our Rob-fix, I really think that CW should use Edward's images only in these pivotal moments.:)

Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) needs to be seen as little as possible in order to get that feel we all got when Bella (Kristen Stewart) went to rescue him in Italy so to speak. That moment was evrything in the Book.

A lot of people are saying that we need to see Edward's pain and suffering while he's gone. I disagree. Bella didn't see it and he has to account for his actions at the end and regain trust in him. I think the audience does too. We can't know how much it hurt him directly (I'm sure it'll come across his face a little bit during the break up scene) because he has to convince Bella at the end that he'll never do it again. The director has to satisfy a wide audience . . . he can't jsut strictly follow the book, nor can he deviate too much from it, but neither can he lock Edward away (my guess is he'll be locked out only about 25%). All because the fans are varied! There are those who are loyal fans of the book; there are those who are solely fans of Robert Pattinson, there are people who WILL NOT read the book and only watch the movie. So, I am guessing, Summit having savvy producers (look how they dispense RPattinson all over the globe), will insist on having a movie that will satisfy ALL types of fans and will try to capture more wider audience. Personally, I want a lot more Edward in it. I can't deal only 20% of Edward in it. Buuutttt . . . remember we have a male director here. Expect a lot of action, more sophisticated special effects, but not too much romance or feelings. I predict, many will be disappointed in this movie simply because it is difficult to satisfy everyone. Moreover, everyone has different take on what book is trying to express. Remember, this is art--- everyone is entitled to their interpretation. For example, some people will interpret Salvador Dali's painting differently. There are those who will have literal interpretation, but there are those who will interpret it psychological, and some artistically . . . so let the guessing game begins.

Although EC is not in the scenes in New Moon, we should see him in South America chasing after Victoria or acting angry and alone. Because that is what we found out he did in Eclispe (which will not be put in the Eclispe movie). Maybe some might feel that this deviates from the book, but it actually does not, because it is the storyline of what is actually happening. I am especially interested in the scene that he calls Bella's house and thinks she's dead... I want to see his reaction, hearing the his love has killed herself. He is such a tortured soul.

I agree with the fleeting images as Bellas' interaction with Jacob intensifies. We do need to see Edward in Hell though since we will never get anymore Edwards' POV books, might look hookey to have her see his face and hear his voice simutaneously. The 4 months lost would be a great place for dreamlike images and of course as mentioned must see reaction when Jacob basically over the phone Bellas dead. I mean Rob does tortured so well.
