'Eclipse' bringing back a 'Twilight' blue hue?

'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' - Summit Ent.

Months ago, we had a great discussion about the possibility that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse's hue might be a little more gray than the prior films.

The idea that the film would be primarily grayish or reddish in color then stemmed from a look at some of David Slade's prior work - particularly Hard Candy and 30 Days Of Night. That and the fact that The Twilight Saga: New Moon's gold tones began a new trend of mixed color schemes for these varying films. Later, when the title art and first movie poster for the film were revealed, the use of gray became undoubtable.

Recently, a few new stills from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse were unveiled by studio Summit Entertainment, and of them one stands out to some readers of this column.

Yesterday, when the cover art for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion was revealed, a commenter named "Kris" shared her thoughts on the issue in very true and readable form.

"Anyone notice the deep-color theme in this flick--the blues and aquas, especially in the book cover and that pic. of the Cullens. They look like they all shopped in a denim store before the big battle!"

'Twilight' - Summit Ent.

Indeed the photo of the Cullens does have a bit of that reminiscent Twilight blue hue.

Of course, there are some obvious improvements in wardrobing, stances, backdrops, and hairstyles to speak of since this photo from 2008's Twilight, but take a look at the similarities between these two photos.

You can also see a bit of the blue being used again in most of the backgrounds, landscape shots, and Volturi sequences in the official trailer for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

In the trailer, title art, and other imagery for this film, there is certainly a great deal of gray being utilized (and the logo for film studio Summit Entertainment is gray this time as well, after having been blue for Twilight and golden for New Moon), but the blue is also quite present, don't you think?

A lot of fans were on the fence about the major use of blue hue in Twilight, but most would probably admit there was definitely some magic associated with it. So, it's very interesting to see that with Eclipse, director David Slade is bringing back some of the original tones from the film series, isn't it?

Think there's a purpose or need for the blue hue in Eclipse? Do you agree that the Cullen family photo colors from Eclipse are similar to some of those in Twilight? Think the new editor (who worked on Twilight) might've had something to do with it? Comment below with your thoughts on the subject!

I like the blue hue, i`m glad it maybe back in Eclipse, I missed it in New Moon !!!!!

I noticed the large amounts of blue in the photos as well. I found it surprising. I'm not a fan of the blue from Twilight, although from a symbolic standpoint I can understand it. Blue usually equals cold. I liked the warmer, richer tones of New Moon.

theabyssgazes.blogspot has an article about the overuse of blue and orange in films today. I thought you might find it interesting. I'd post the link but I can't in the comments.

I see a bit of the blue hues however I feel that the stills that wehave all seen and includingthe trailer look more "realistic". Even the above picture with Jacob, Bella and Edward...the colors seem to stay true

the blue hue you speak of was the terrible blue filter that Catherine Hardwicke insisted on using. I don't necessarily think that, just cause the clothes are blue, they're using a blue hue.

i noticed the colours too but i still feel as though the darkness was an initial theme due to the vampires and i think that was most important! :)

Definitely prefer the 'blue/gray' tones of Twilight. The brown tones of NM was meant to symbolize warmth but ends up making all the vamps look yellow and sick looking. Yeah, definitely bring back the blue cool shades but toned down a bit so the humans don't have grey circles on their faces.

Hasn't the costume designer, (Tish Monaghan is it?), spoken in the past about the fact that they put all the Cullen's in shades of blue, and then the closer Bella became to being one of them the more blue they would put in her color palette? I think it may have been in one of her interviews with MTV for New Moon.

I take that back, I'm looking at the articles now and she said the Cullen's had a "cool tones", not just blue. There's two different interviews, one with EW and one with MTV.

I think Twilight was a bit too blue. New Moon had warmer colours, but it also made the vampires look more human instead of extremely pale, so they almost just looked like normal pale people. I wouldn't mind if they put a bit of a grey/blue hue in Eclipse...just not as much as Twilight. The whole movie I was wondering why everything was so off colour.

The blue hue that may come back in Eclipse, would fit great. The theme of New Moon was the warm friendship with Jacob. Now in Eclipse there is this threat all the time, so I would like to see the blue hue and maybe grayish tones in the next movie!

I'm very happy David Slade has gone back to the twilight roots a little, with the colours. It looks like he is bringing back the magic the first movie had, that the second movie didn't (for me anyway) I did like New Moon, but I felt there was nothing in New Moon that resemble twilight. The magic and chemistry was lost. I'm very glad they bought the twilight editor in for the same reason.

There is no blue hue in the eclipse pictures released, they are wearing blue denim. Wearing blue denim is not the same as that ridiculous blue filter used in Twilight. Dave Slade is going beyond that. He is using richer and more complex color.

I hated the blue filter in Twilight. It was incredibly annoying. The colors in New Moon were beautiful and much more what I pictured when reading the books. I think a grey pallet is fine, but no weird filtering techniques.

I thought the twilight blue hue was cute but new moon's was better. I think for this one they should have gone with a red/brown maybe, since on the poster Eclipse is written in red, you know? But from the looks of it, the characters' skins don't look blue, as they did in Twilight. I'm sorry, but if you watch the scene in the Cullens' kitchen it's just too blue lol. I wouldn't mind it though, the trailer looks good.

But due to the fact that the trailer only has some scenes that look like they have a blue hue, I don't think the overall hue will be blue.

i dont think david is using blue hue as the color tone of eclipse.

he's more on the natural color/cinematography of his location. perhaps the reason this article was written is due to eclipse clips released were shot either with sky and water that's blue.

i cant wait to see this movie :)

All I can say is "please god no!" The blue tinge was the worst part of the movie. It made everyone look sickly. I loved the rich colors in New Moon. Please-stop the madness!!

I loved the blue hue in 'Twilight'!
But that is none other than the work of Director 'Cathrine Hardwicke'!!! If you look at her other work, 'Thirteen' & 'Lords of Dogtown' they to had a blue hue! Catherine was also a production designer for many yrs, one of her biggest yet, 'Vanilla Sky' also had a lot of soft blue tones to the set and location settings! So I believe Catherine knows whats she's looking for, and knows what she likes!!

I believe 'Eclipse' will have a very "similar" look to 'Twilight' but i think the colours & hues will shift throughout the film, which is already noticable in the Trailer, when scenes of the character 'Jacob" flash up, there is still warmth to his scenes, however when we see flashes of the character 'Victoria', there is a more blue/darker tone to the picture.

I am looking extremely forward to seeing what Director 'David Slade' has install for us viewers, I think he has set the tone perfectly already! Here's waiting til June 30!! CAN'T WAIT!!!

I am all for blue or anything that brings back some of the feel that Twilight had. I thought New Moon was really BAD :( Stupid tricks, character's that said things they'd never say, and the flow was totally off. Not to mention the score... all of these things made it lose the magic that Twilight had. I am so hopeful that Eclipse will bring the magic back... I don't think I can sit through another sorry interpretation of this series. Come on David Slade... I hope you hit this one out of the park! And I pray the score is reminiscent of Twilight too... what can I say, Summit had a good thing but let Weitz F it up!

I love the blue. It's what created the magic in the first movie. It's the sense of the unreal that it needs to have. The second movie needed to be warmer because of Jacob. I think the third should have the blue back because it's about the Vampire's fight. I'm so into the costume designs. The blues, dark greys, navys, warm purples and white. My wardrobes the same now...lol

I think the blue hue or blue filter Catherine Hardwicke used was just right for the first movie, maybe it was a bit unusual when i saw it for the first time, but they had to describe the coldness and the beauty of the vampires and i think they did it perfectly. Also it brought us that magic that i saw in the book because everything looks surreal.
The brown/gold in new moon made it lose the touch of magic and fantasy for me at least but i again think they were perfect for it because they had to to describe the warmth of the werewolfs and the relationship that bella and jacob had and that is what larger part of the movie is about. And the Culens maybe do look more human but that's the point because in the second book they aren't that big of mystery to us anymore and bella looks at them as a family and they appear in pretty normal scenes.
And last i think eclipse is more gray than blue...just because they wear jeans it doesn't mean that the blue filter is back.

  • Amidala 1 year ago

The whole movie is going to be darker and grayish because there are more battles and fighting (which i don't like by the way, the book doesn't emphasize that so much) so again the coloring is perfect for that concept of the movie. But i agree with KateErin that it looks like from the trailer that the colors will shift throughout the movie which is appropriate because now bella has a strong bond not just with edward and the cullens but also with jacob and quileutes and they need to show this relationship with different colors...
That's just my opinion...sorry if the grammar is wrong...english is not my first language...

I think the blue is not going to be as it was in Twilight (or at least I sure hope so). I think is more a wardrobe thing, cooler colors since the Cullens are back their color scheme is back. In New Moon we had the warmer colors because of the wolfpack and that affected everything from wardrobe to the crisp golden color used. From the trailer Eclipse looks like if going to have a crisper clear look, dark when it need to be dark, warm when it needs to be warm. Just look at the picture of Bella and Jacob (that I bet is from the bonfire scene) it looks warmer. And the other pictures they looks crisp just look at the first meadow scene that came out, it's clear and vivid color. I think visually this might end up be the better looking movie of the three.

Twilight was an amazing film which projected the cold and wet that Bella was experiencing from the weather and alienation. New Moon's yellow hue projected the warmth she felt from Jacob - her 'sunshine', although the scenes with Edward and the Cullens should have had the blue hue as it did in Twilight. Let's hope Eclipse doesn't leave out most of the story and feeling like New Moon did as it was bitterly disappointing.

I think deep blues and greays are perfect....this book was a huge book for the series...The dark cloud over Bellas head, loving both men (in different ways). The gloom of Victoria and the Newborns coming after Bella and anyone if Forks basically.
It has to have that "gloomy feel." If anyone saw 30 Days of Night you know Mr Slade is going for the darker tones...It will be interesting to see, if as the "fight" comes to a end, will the colors brighten up a little bit...hmmm?

  • Kris 1 year ago

I agree with many of you that with the return of the Cullens, the coolness comes back to Forks and Bella's life. I hope, though, that the warmth from the wolf pack shown in New Moon won't be forgotten. All that coolness certainly did make Twilight a bit dreary.

P.S. - I'm honored to have sparked such a conversation. Thanks for noticing, Amanda. :)

Also, I find it interesting that Jacob/Lautner is placed in a cool-toned shirt in the promotional poster and in at least one of the film pics. His character's warmth seems to be smothered by that color. Looking at the pic. of him and Bella in front of a supposed fire, he regains that earthiness in his neutral-colored shirt. Does anyone think they put him in a cool tone in the poster to block out the romanticism he had with Bella in New Moon?

I was kind of hoping they would have done a fire/ice thing for the promotional poster, keeping Jacob in his warm hues and possibly putting Bella/Kristen Stewart in a mixture of hot and cold colors. That certainly might have reflected the plot a bit better.

Leave me alone and stopping leaving comments on my articles and stop having your friends leave nasty comments as well. I don't give 2 ratstails about what you think and I already know that you are stealing your photos from another Examiner because he told me. Hundreds of people will write about Twilight because it is popular, so just deal with it. Don't make me amp it up even more, and write about Twilight related stuff every day, multiple times because I will.

I had no idea this director was the same one who did Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night, those are two of my favorites. Those movies seem to be a little scarier/ gorrier than the Twilight Saga,though...wonder why he decided to take this movie on, besides the fact that they are the most popular thing in the Entertainment world right now that is.

I don't think it's the same blue hue as Twilight. It seems like a grey palette to me and I think that's great. I like that each movie has a different director and will subtly reflect that. I'm really looking forward to Slade's interpretation (although I'm not optimistic that the writing will get better since Summit hasn't ditched MR).

    Amanda,

You know how people like to get mean and nasty when you are successful and they are not. It could also just be some kids being kids. I love all of your articles, and have never been offended by anything you've ever said. People need to realize that this is your site to write and do whatever you want with. If you want to write about RPatz cutting his hair 1/16 of an inch, you can. And every pic I've ever seen you post has always had proper crediting on it. Don't let people like that ruin your day. I don't think your have to defend yourself against such risiculous behavior.

On a note related to the article, I can't wait to see the movie! I agree with someone say Melissa Rosenberg beeds to be ditched, but there's not much we can do about that right now. Hopefully they will spring for a great writer with Breaking Dawn.

Amanda, I'm sorry that you have to deal with such harassment from comment-ers. You have always been credible and informative. It's unfortunate that there are those who feel the need to hide behind their computers and post negative responses (like the ones we see here). It's also unfortunate that they do not want to address you personally with an email and deal with the issue directly; instead, they have to attack your credibility.

All I can say is "please God, YES!" The blue tinge really set the tone of the movie and truly helped transport us to the Northeast. The rich colors of New Moon were appropriate to the strong wolf-pak, loss of the Cullens, change of season thing. BUT EDWARD IS BACK! And so is the BLUE!!
