The shift wasn't too drastic to stomach, but there was certainly a noticeable difference in the costuming from Twilight to The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
According to costume designer Tish Monaghan's recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, though, the changes were methodical and purposed.
Robert Pattinson, according to her, "wasn’t a fan of the pea coat." They "wanted to portray him more as a gentleman, more elegant and classic. With our vampire characters, I always went back to the time period in which they were turned to see if there’s any element I could try to simulate in contemporary clothing. He came out of the Edwardian period, around 1910. Of course, most of the gentleman from that time would be wearing suits, coats, hats, etc. We had to pick something that was iconic for the character that would suffice to be used throughout the whole film."
Apparently, the precision in costume decision-making streamed to the wolfpack (the avoidance of a transformation imbroglio) and the Volturi as well.

honestly... I wasnt a fan of the wardrobe AT ALL.... with the exception of bella's birthday dress and a few pieces taken from the first movie, I thought that the costume designer did a poor job. Also I HATED edward hair! what's up with that??
A lot of people keeps saying that EC looked horrible in NM and completely disagree. I think all of the characters and the movie in general was all together better. I feel the costume director did an excellent job on all the characters. She brought in a much more mature feel to all, and I felt that was really needed. I feel Tish did an awesome job and I can't wait to see what she does for Eclipse, there are so many eras that she was able to play with must have been so much fun!
I really didn't like the drastic changes to the wardrobe,make-up and especially their eyes!(I thought they wanted to keep it a secret that they were vampires???). I understand that they obviously got a bigger budget for the movie & I did expect MINOR changes but not this drastic!
There were a lot of improvements in this movie and I agree with MeMo's comment on that this movie felt much more mature. However, many of the wardrobe choices were horrific in New Moon, especially with Alice. Being the fashionista that her character is, I doubt she would have chosen anything that she wore in the movie.
The contacts were WAY out of control... TOO OBVIOUS. They were *just right* in twilight, enough to look different but not so much that all the unknowing humans would immediately notice the vampire in their midst.
On Edward, I will say that I love Rob, however he did look somewhat icky in this movie. I won't criticize too much though, after all the haggard look plays into the struggle his character undergoes during this period.
I liked pretty well everything about new moon but i would have liked Robert's longer hair in Twilight, it was a little to short .Taylor looked great as well as Kristen and all of the Cullen's I can't wait to see David Slade's vision of eclipse . Now we all wait again...lol
I agree that the eyes were a bit out there. The rest of the wardrobe didn't bother me... except Alice. Oh, Alice... what happened??? It was hideous. And her hair... how could her hair have GROWN??? Come on now... we notice these things!
And Jasper's wig was laughable. How can we take him seriously? When he was attacking Bella I just wanted to laugh at him!
I loved the change in Edwards appearance (especially the fact that ridiculous bouffant hairdo was gone). I really didn't see a noticeable change with Bella, which was good...I truly hated Alices clothing and hair (gone was the "pixish style" in the book and last movie, she was barely recognizeable in this movie.
Overall, I loved the texture of this movie, the shades of sepia, were so true to the theme of the story...Kudos to that!
It's a good thing Jacob will be having short hair for the rest of the movies, because Hollywood hair people are clueless when it comes to Native American "mens" hair...
All that being said, I loved the movie and in fact am going back today...I can hardly wait to see what happens in Eclipse...
i myself was not too upset with Alice's change. I see her as someone that would change as the mood suits her. I hated the party look on Bella. too childish to me.
as for Edward. Hated the overdone hair in the first movie so I was glad to see it cut. looked the less togetherness as it reflected his inner mood. the only beef I have was the abs. this is a guy who was fraking starving to death when he was turned and now he's basically on an all liquid diet. he's not going to have abs. he's going to be very slender, almost bony. so the painted on abs were laughable. I wanted to go back and wipe the paint off and let him be bony, fragile looking, distraught and suicidal boy.
Personally I want to see more Robert Shirtless!
I didn't like Alice or Jasper's new look. I like there looks in Twilight. Jasper's hair in New Moon was bad. Alice's wasn't bad but I missed her pixy style. Everyone else looked good.
The coloring of the eye contacts were intense this time, they really stood out.
I missed Alices spikie hair and her more pixie kind of style. I HATED Jaspers hair I think they did better on Edward this time[except I mis his old 3 parted hair style] I think they dressed Jane like a 6 year old. and I didnt dislike Esmes hair strait but I didnt love it I liked it wavie. I think they put to much of Kristens hair style into bellas hair. Truthfully I liked the Twilght hair better lol Carlisle looked great as always.
I REALLY didnt like the huge contacts. Like Alices was supposed to be coal black when she comes to see why Bella jumped off the cliff and Edwards eyes were supposed to be even blacker than Alices when Bella comes to save Edward. Oh and you could sooooo see the ends of the contacts on Janes in the elevator ride
Although the Cullen's and Hale's new contacts were beautiful, they weren't realistic. It would take 2 seconds for someone to figure out they weren't normal humans.
I also didn't like Alice's wardrobe. All the clothes were designer, but except for the party dress, they were old ladyish. Alice should dress appropriate to her vampire age, not her age if she had stayed human!
