Stephenie Meyer's 'The Host' - Hatchette Books
Just a couple of weeks ago, we learned that progress on bringing Stephenie Meyer's The Host to the big screen was being made when Deadline Hollywood reported that writer and director Andrew Niccol was "working on the third draft of a screenplay" while collaborating with Stephenie Meyer herself.
Then, Deadline suggested that filming for the movie could begin as early as next year, and yesterday the same site reported that the movie "will soon start casting."
You might remember that back when the film adaptation for this book was announced, Stephenie Meyer announced that she was interested in seeing who The Host fans would choose for their favorite characters, and since then we had a huge discussion about which actors and actresses fans had in mind for the various roles.
In that discussion, it became clear that fans of the book had a wealth of ideas as to how the film should be cast, and it'll certainly be interesting to see who is selected for each part.
No word yet on whether there will be an open casting call for the picture or whether it'll be agency-based.

I love this book and I really hope they get the right cast.
i like the way you think, kia! also, i think it could be cool if they could somehow get ashley greene (or someone with similar appearance) for melanie... she'd probably be tied up in breaking dawn bru-ha-ha, but still.
I think Ashley Greene is wonderful, but I see someone more bad-a** playing Melanie. Since we are talking about Ian Somerhalder, I think Evangeline Lily would make a FANTASTIC Melanie (Kate from Lost). I keep imagining Jared as a buffer Freddie Prinze, Jr. Yum. Am I showing my age yet? LOL.
I know they'll get it right. There was a lot of uproar when RPatz was cast as Edward Cullen....
Halle Berry for Melanie...that's who I pictured as I was reading the book (I know she's older than the character but I don't think the age of Melanie is an issue)
Personally I think that they should get all new unknown actors. This would give them there big break, as I am sure that being a Stephenie Meyer story that the movie will do well.
Ian Somerhalder for Ian, for sure. And I REALLY want Sophia Bush to be Melanie. She would be perfect!
hehe, i never considered him first but since the rumours started about ian somerhalder started i cant imagine anyone else for ian. That they share names has got to be an omen eh? hehe. Plus the fact that he is easy on the eye doesnt hurt. Not that I'm superficial :P He really is a good actor in VD, and he can do the nasty thing and ian is an ass at first, but im not sure if he can do serious-nasty as well as sarcastic-nasty as he does with Damon. Hopefully he can :D

Oh, I don't even care who they cast. I wasn't happy when I saw Robert Pattinson was cast to play Edward, but when I saw him actually playing the part, I was sold.
The idea of Ian Somerhalder playing Ian O'Shea is hilarious to me, I don't know if that's positive or negative yet (because I adore Damon like I have a teenage crush on him, though I really dislike the rest of the characters and... the series (The Vampire Diaries) itself).
I'm really curious what they'll come up with.
And I do think unknown actors would be great, though if they can find a known actor who plays the role REALLY well... that's fine, of course.
Ian Somerhalder playing Ian O'Shea? It will be AWESOME! And he fits in the character.

If this film gets as TV-centric a cast as so many people seem to want I will be gutted. Regardless of their acting skills to have a film with a central cast of Sophia Bush/Jensen Ackles etc will make it a shoo in to tank spectacularly at the box office. There's a reason these guys are TV actors and not big Hollywood stars, and if you really want them cast in the adaptation of a book you love you're setting that film up for failure. Lets see some real Hollywood names attached to this product, please, so that it beomes a worthy film in its own right and not another tweenie cult. The original text deserves that much.

Lauren I so agree with you. Even though I watch a lot of CW shows, I don´t believe that it´s good idea to put any of those actors in this particular movie. As you say they are tv actors for a reason. And I definitely do not want to see any of the twilight actors in this movie, because this is something totally different. It deserves to be something great not some tween movie with mediocre actors. Don't get me wrong I love the twilight books BUT I am definitely not a big fan of the movies they made so far(maybe that'll change with eclipse). I loved the host so much and I want to love the movie as well. So they need to step it up and find the best actors who can make these amazing characters come to life.
I must agree don't know about all CW actors as others have listed. This might show my age but what about Jarad = Freddie Prinze Jr, Ian = Paul Walker (although Ian Somerhalder also has those vibrant blue eyes just always pictured someone Ian as someone about the same size a Jarad), Kyle = Rober Hoffman, Melanie = Briana Evigan, Wander = not sure, think Dakota Fanning would be perfect but don't think they should have any of the actors involved in the Twilight movies in this. And finaly the Seeker = Christina Ricci . Like I said this probably shows my age.
I´m sorry, but I have to disagree. I didn´t read the book so I dont know the characters, but seems like lot of fans want jensen and Sophia in the movie.Just look at some fanmade trailers on youtube. They´re both great actors, I LOVE jensen as Dean on Supernatural and I think he´s one of the most underrated actors, he´s just AMAZING. He deserves to play in BIG MOVIES, but I don´t really want to see him in any movie related to Stephanie Meyer.I just don´t want him to become the new Pattison. that would be just sick. And don´t tell me some Pattison is better actor then Jensen, he just don´t know how to express some emotions... I don´t get the hystery about him. And by the way, Jensen won ´t have time, cause SPN will have 6th season.

I loved the book The Host even more than I loved the Twilight series. It will KILL me if they cast The Host as badly as they did Twilight. The Host is a more mature book than Twilight, and deserves to have a talented cast. I feel sick seeing how many people want to pull substandard actors from television and the Twilight series. I've always seen Sam Worthington as Jared. He is a talented actor (if you don't think so watch Somersault) and definitely hott enough to play Jared. This movie should not be made to please teeny boppers only.
I love the idea of Sophia and Ian. Love them both. Sophia rocks it on OneTree Hill and Ian as Damon. He is soo hot. I have the coffee table book he did a shoot for too called About Face which was done for charity. He is shirtless and oh so sexy!!
i really think they should cast Amanda Seyfried as Wanda/Melanie. idk when i think about her, Amanda is who pops into my head.
I agree with Annie, Ian Somerhalder is perfect for the part of Ian. Those ice blue eyes are soooo sexy, Ian Somerhalder just ooozes sex AND he's a brilliant actor.
I haven't finished the book yet but it's really good so far. I'm at the part were Wanda goes on her first raid with Ian, Kyle and Jared. I totally agree that they should not cast the same actors who were cast in the Twilight series. That would make me not want to watch the Host movie.
