Breaking Dawn, the fourth installment of the Twilight series has gone from "optioned property" to "script," which means that Melissa Rosenberg is one busy lady.
For weeks, we've been speculating about whether this portion of the story of our favorite Twilight characters (one which many Twilight fans to be of more than mild importance) will be brought to the big screen.
It appears that crossed fingers can relax, now, though. Instead of being listed as "optioned property" on IMDb Pro, Breaking Dawn is now in "script," and "[p]lanning to start in late spring 2010."
The plans for production are, quite frankly, right on schedule, with the quickened pace of the Twilight series' production (a fact which appeases many of even the harshest critics as - we all well know - many of the characters' physical characteristics are not subject to change as are, say, the humans portraying them). Despite the potential obstacles for production of the film, it appears that Summit Entertainment and the good people behind The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse are fully aware of the fact that most fans of the series would be quite angered by the failure to complete the series.
That said, it is good news for those that wish to see Breaking Dawn become The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn that the status has changed. It is but another step in the road to confirmation, as usually we've see these sorts of signals right before an official press release is given. However, one should bear in mind that IMDb is not said official word from Summit Entertainment.
In a related piece of news, a recent Variety article about Summit Entertainment, the production and distribution company responsible for Twilight, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse recently hinted at the present status of Breaking Dawn, indicating that it was an accepted fact that it would, indeed, be made.
Now for the hardest (at least, historically) part: who will direct? After Catherine Hardwicke, Chris Weitz, and David Slade - three directors with a distinct and individual style and vision, which will likely be seen in the varying sects of the Twilight saga - who should take the helm of Breaking Dawn? Comment below and let us know what you think!

james camron all love and action!
steven speilberg!
yep, james cameron of titanic
I wish it would be James Cameron. Great article!
I wish they'd give it back to Catherine!
I have never considered him before but thinking about it james cameron probably could do a good job of it. I really hope they dont give it back to catherine. I love twilight and i dont think she did the book justice. Maybe its just that the series is not good for films, we will never know until new moon is done, but so far i hope she doesnt get breaking dawn.
So happy they are making it though :D The are gonna have to be REALLY careful though because there will be a load of controversey about nessie and jacob if they dont describe imprinting properly in eclipse. And I wonder how they will do nessie? Its obviously got to be computer animated-its just physically impossible to get a baby who looks a month old who is that smart...
i think from what I've seen so far I think Chris should get it again. Especially with all the special effects that will have to be done in B.D. again. But James Cameron would be amazing too. Just please not Catherine. "personally" I don't think she did it justice.
Not Catherine please! James Cameron sounds goods, or maybe back to Chris.
Just has to be a woman - really too emotionally based for a man - Catherine at least brought emotionality on roids to Twilight, yet to see if the guys can accommodate it - personally I think that the Golden Compass had as much emotion as a dead fish - but then the book didn't have much either - but Breaking Dawn is not an action movie and involves some fairly difficult female specific scenes - go for a female director
give it to Catherine
J.J. Abrams
Not Catherine, pls. I'm in agreement with others here that Twilight wasn't given it's justice. The book is awesome. The movie could have been better. But I'm one to talk since I probably couldn't have done any better ;). I think whoever it is needs to have a lot of CGI experience. I can't say, "give it to Chris" until I see how New Moon turns out. I just would like to see them stick to the book. It's awesome!
I think Alfonso Cuarón would be good.
He directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and this is definitely my favourite of all the films based solely on how he directed it.
I think Chris Weitz, if New Moon is as good as I been reading about...with the special effects then Chris would be the right guy and he could be available since he is not directing Eclipse.
I agree with Kate. JJ Abrams would do an amazing job.
The big question right now should be, "is it going to be split into 2 movies" Breaking Dawn the book is very long and you can't do it justice in movie form because you would leave out a hack of a lot of the book JMO
James Cameron is a brilliant directer....i say get him
If what I have seen from the New Moon sneak peeks is any indication about how amazing this movie will be, I would love for Chris to come back and direct BD.
James Cameron would certainly be able to tug on our heartstrings, who commented that men are not emotional creatures? What a narrow minded comment to make...
Catherine Hardwicke should return to finish the series. BREAKING DAWN is one of the most romantic of the books and she launched the series brilliantly: She cast it, created the mood and look of the piece, and delivered a sensational TWILIGHT.
Never Catherine!!!The first movie sucked!!!And the screen writter should be replaced too!!!
I agree with most of the above, James Cameron indeed would make a great director for Breaking Dawn, but if he is not available, then I say that it should go to tim Burton!! He has such a vivid imagination I think he could do great things for the finale of this series. Take "Edward Scissorhands" and "Charlie & Choc. Factory" for example!! They were both Emotional and Creative!!
Breaking dawn was such a bad book.
NOOOOOOO! they should not make it.
I agree with most when it comes to directors and James Cameron directing it. He is absolutely fantastic, not to mention has directed one of my all time favorite movies. I think he would fit the bill perfectly.
In reply to Helena's comment above. I actually think they can pull off getting a little girl to play Renesmee...they might have to go with a child who is a littlelbit older than said in the book, maybe 5 or so, but it shouldn't be too awfully difficult. I am okay with that though, considering that, while reading BD, i always pictured Nessie 5, just because of her intelligence. I found it hard to picture a baby doing all the things she did!
But anyways...
I am SO extremely happy that they are going to complete the saga. When I read somewhere that they might not, I was so mad... But ya...I'm glad they are!
well anyone woudl godo. chterine would breat or james cameryo.e but yay finally!
I'm so happy to hear it's into script now. It definitely needs a female director. I think Catherine should be considered. It sounded like Rob and Kristen really liked working with her.
I think for the special effects that will be needed, James Cameron would be a good choice. But it sounds like Chris Weitz is doing a good job with "New Moon", so he would be a good choice, too. I'm just thrilled that Breaking Dawn is going to be made! The only thing I was really disappointed in with "Twilight" was the meadow scene. Chapter 13 of the book was what the series was born of, there should have been more of it in the movie. There were other things Catherine put in the movie that wasted time and were irrevelant to the story, she could have used that time better with more of the meadow scene. But like others have said, I'm just glad it got made, and now we can get on to the sequels, and hopefully they'll just get better and better (especially since they have more money to work with now)!
i think, james cameron is the right one, for the BD job
Melissa Rosenberg and her "script writing" chopped out far too much of the romance between Edward and Bella in "Twilight." And Catherine Hardwicke cut out scenes that should have been left in the movie and kept in scenes that needed to be cut out. ("Butt-Crack Santa," anyone?! *rolls eyes*) Whether they get a male director or a female director for BD, they need to first make sure that Melissa Rosenberg does NOT decimate the novel to create the screenplay, AND they need to have a director who has previous experience with filming romantic blockbusters with a great deal of special effects. (James Cameron would be an excellent choice, if they could get him to do it . . . I mean, hello . . . he directed "Titanic," after all.) But really anyone else who has the same or similar backround in directing, with experience directing films with a great deal of special effects, a lot of action, romance, humor, etc, would be just fine. I think the director of "The Mummy" movies and "Van Helsing" (whose name I forget now) would be a great choice for director of "Breaking Dawn" as well.
Jove . . . how can you honestly say that Catherine Hardwicke "brought emotionality on roids to Twilight"?! She cut out approximately 90% of the romance between Edward and Bella, and added in stupid, unnecessary lines like the "Butt-Crack Santa" dialouge in the diner, instead of leaving in the deleted scene where Charlie is talking with Bella about the Cullens in the diner. The dialogue between Charlie and Bella about the Cullens was from the novel, the "Butt-Crack Santa" discussion between Bella and Waylon and the waitress was not . . . besides which, that whole scene wasn't even funny anyway, it was completely pointless and never should have been left in the film. The meadow scene, also, was completely chopped up . . . and I agree with the person who said earlier that, considering the fact that the meadow scene was SM's dream that started the whole Twilight saga, that scene, especially, should have been depicted exactly the way it was in the novel . . . no shortcuts, no dialogue changes, no missing scenes. The whole thing should have been in there from start to finish as it was in the novel.
Nick Cassevetes - the director of "The Notebook"! He captured the passion in that movie...which they've got to do in BD - end with a BIG finish! If they don't break it up into two movies, they've got to make BD at least 2 1/2 hours. We would all sit through it with no complaints:)
I'm ecstatic they finally agreed to put BD on film!
I agree with most of the people here. James Cameron is a very good choice, especially now that the twilight people have a bigger budget.
What about Baz Lhurman? what do you think? he directed Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge.
I'm thrilled to know Breaking Dawn will be made! It just wouldn't seem right to go part of the way and then not finish. I do agree with some of the other comments about scenes being cut from Twilight. The meadow scene was missing a lot and since it's what inspired the whole thing, that is really a disappointment. I thought the part where Edward tells Bella he couldn't live with himself if he hurt her and her answering that she would rather DIE than stay away from him - was something that should NOT have been cut!! Hello?
I don't think a movie can ever match up to the book, but I think it could have been done a lot better. I'm hoping New Moon is done a bit better than Twilight, but regardless I will be there with bells on!
I am thrilled that they will make Breaking Dawn!!! They need to make sure that they DO NOT CUT THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OUT OF BREAKING DAWN, like they did in Twilight!!!!! Twilight was still very good but they cut to much out. They have to keep it mostly like the book for this movie, because it was the best book even! Don't cut the wedding, honeymoon, pregnancy, the birth, her transformation, the imprinting etc...Even if they have to make the movie longer than 2 hours. It should be longer than 2 hours anyway its a long book. Also they need to show a little more love and romance between Bella and Edward in the scenes!!!!!
NOOOOOO!!! Please not CH!!! She butchered Twilight and like someone previously said, put lovely little gems like "butt-crack Santa" in it. Meadow??? WHAT meadow? Sigh. Breaking Dawn will not be the easiest movie to make ....
I agree with Sandra if they are going to make BD into a movie, it really needs to be 2. There's no way they can condense that book into a 2 hour movie, I don't think even a 3 hour could do it justice.
I am glad to see that it's closer to being a possibility. I would absolutely love to see BD on the big screen! (The wedding, Renesmee, and Bella kicking some Volturi butt, just to name a few things, would be great to see on the big screen.) But I have no idea about a director, I really don't know anything about directors.
I actually saw the movie before reading the books and honestly i think CH did a good job with what she was given and heres why. First of all she didnt write the script for the movie MR did and from my understanding she has also butchered New Moon too. Also the first movie had no budget to speak of so there was only so much that she could do. Also as for the cutting of scenes i personally did not see any on the DVD that absolutely had to be in the movie. personally they should get rid of MR because she is butchering the books.
I am so excited they are going to make BD- it would be ridiculous to stop at Eclipse!!!
Seriously i was upset with Twilight, and I understand that the books will always be better, but I hope CH doesn't get near BD!
They say that Twilight is directed at the teenage group, but i am no teenager and neither are all of my friends who are just as crazy about the books as I am- I sat through Titanic like 20 times when i was a teenager and that was so long, they could make BD into a 4 hour movie and you would still have everyone there watching it! The Lord of the Rings movies were 3 hours and people saw those.
Just my opinion
What about Joe Wright? He would be my first choice. He already did fantastic jobs with book adaptations, Pride&Prejudice and Atonement! I liked both very much, he captured the books quite well....but thinking of BD, I almost hope he wouldn´t capture the book to well. *coughs*
Though I´m not the greatest fan (another cough) of the book, it would be nice the see it on screen...
I am exciting and cautious at the same time. I am in my early thirties and a huge fan of the series. BD has to be done with justice to the book. YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS MOVIE A DISNEY VERSION! The book was powerful in Bella's pregnancy, Edward's and Jacob's agony, Renesmee's birth, etc. The director on this should not be afraid to push the envelope. Not saying the other's had no gumption, but BD director has to take it all the way. But who???
I am thrilled that they will be making Breaking Down into a film and I agree with many of you that it should either be two movies or a "3 hour" film. For God sake, Watchmen was 3 hours and it was the most horrible movie I've ever seen.
Also, James Cameron would be amazing to direct BD. Because whoever does direct BD cannot be afraid to really show what it was all about and all the key scenes. And BD would probably have to be rated "R" because it's more focused towards adults. I think Stephanie Meyer's started Twilight with the intent of it being a "tween" book but as the saga progressed it became more mature.
I saw Twilight and I hadn't read any of the books and when I read the book after seeing the movie I was so disappointed. There were simple things that could be done without extra money to make the movie better. The connection and affection Bella & Edward had in the book was by no means even close in the movie. Even those funny scenes of him showing up to meet her after class and more. They could of made it more affectionate just like they were in the book.
I hope the next three movies show the bond and chemistry they had.
I like alot of your suggestions for director and I would like to throw in the name David Yates. He has directed the last couple Harry Potter flicks and has done a really good job with effects. I think he would do a good job on BD. I just hope the screenwriter does a better job with the rest of the saga. Twilight was a disappointment.
Please not Catherine H. While watching Twilight, I kept waiting to feel the love from Bella. Never came until the end of the movie. why? no... I love you. That was disappointing. I agree this needs to be made true to the book. Never mind this PG13 stuff.
All serial movies have to bank on the idea that some portion of their audience may be new to the whole storyline, therefore, a certain amount of time will be needed to build on already existant relationships before extending into plot depths... What I mean by that is simply that no good movie would race through a serial finale without the required attention to details. Example of a bad cut-out in the Twilight movie: Edward & Bella appeared to jump into a complicated relationship, one that the book took time to explain/develop. BD has, in addition to that B&E intensity, there's the werewolves, the cornerstone of Renesmee, Bella's transformation/talents and the Volturi... That's a lot of necessary plot to carefully communicate, and I fear if they fail then BD will come off as a quasi-comicbook, I think that they simply cannot do justice to all the critical elements of BD unless it is done in two movies. The story is popular because of it's strong characters & their interwoven struggles, which, by the finale, are even more the 'blood' of the book.
By the way, is it just me or does it seem they might be taking ideas from "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy - the pre-signing actors ro multi-movies before even 1st's released, fast filming pre-planned... and yet all of those jumbo-books-into-movies were over 2 hours in the theater, esp. the 3rd/finale. Of course, we know that they will cut the movie down for the theater. So, because Summit already knows it has a gold-mine in Twilight, they should release all future movies with a DVD 'deluxe' edition - with those deleted scenes seamlessly woven in - like was done for "LOR". Of course, I'm hoping there are GOOD, Stefenie Meyer-approved deleted scenes in the future...
I'm so glad to hear that Breaking Dawn is going to script. I didn't really think that it wouldn't but you never know. I read a comment about the whole pg-13 thing. I really wish that they would make it rated R. Especially for Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. There were just to many good things in the book to leave out. It's what made them so good.
i vote for a 3 hr movie for Eclipse and BD! theres plenty 3hr movies out there (titanic, LOTR ~ to name two of them). no reason to super shrink a script.
Breaking Dawn is over 700 pages for a great reason. There are so many great points made in Breaking Dawn with such great and carefully articulated detail. Each character is so diverse and unique in their own way and I pray to God that they do the book justice. Stephanie Meyers vision was so clear throughout the books and I would go out to say that they should not cut any portions of the book out. I think they should have STEPHANIE MEYER DIRECT THE MOVIE!!! Who cares if it is a 3-hour movie. Atleast it won't be as boring as Titanic and with so many twist in the story, I'm sure that after 3-hours, twi-fans are still going to crave for more.
I think that Chris Weitz should do Breaking Dawn. He will have been finished with New Moon by then. From all that I have read he is doing a fantastic job on New Moon, so for that fact and the fact that they will need a great CGI guy for Reneesme (like they did for the wolfpack), I think Summit would be very smart to bring him back, and I think he would do a super job.
I don't think that CH would do nearly as well. She is a very nice person, but some of her ideas were strange. I know that part of the problem is that she didn't have much money to work with like CW, but that was not the whole problem with Twilight.
She picked great actors for our beloved characters and the tone she set for the movies was great, but some of her ideas were weird. (Like someone said "butt crack santa" and "spider monkey". Also, the scene she left out (thank god) of Edward taking a little bite out of Bella's finger to taste her blood. That idea was ridiculous and totally out of character and the storyline!)
Anyway, I really hope Summit gets Chris Weitz to do it.
I think breaking dawn should be directed my SM. SHe would capture the love and stuff. And it should be 1 movie in 3 parts each part should be at least an hour long. CH did not do a good job with trying to capture the intense love.ALso the medow scene sucked. It should have been longer and they should have done the blood typing scene insted of that damn feild trip.
I think that Summit would be wise to look at making a 2 part ending. That way we can get the full story. I think 3 hours wont even be enough to pack all of BD in the movie.
I want to see an R rating on this movie, and Eclipse. And BTW I want to play Kate in this film! :)
I'd like to throw in Peter Jackson's name. He has just completed The Lovely Bones, and before the Lord of the Rings, he did Beautiful Creatures. So, he has experience with portraying young people. And he isn't afraid of Terror. And he has lots of experience with CGI. And his partners are GREAT writers too.
