The latest gross figures from IMDb show Twilight (the film) as having brought in a quaint $351,449,475 worldwide, and we already know that it is the number one DVD for the year. Of book sales, Twilight is ranked number two in book sales for the first quarter of this year according to USA Today. Ranked number one? That would be New Moon, followed with Eclipse and Breaking Dawn at a comfortable third and fourth place respectively. (Also, Meyer’s The Host was at 14th place.) Furthermore, a recent press release shows Twilight still ranked in the top ten sales and rentals for the week ending on April 12th, the third week of its release to DVD.
A prediction: 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' will be number one film for 2009
With Twilight’s film success, some commentators have opined that the film’s frenzy was responsible for some of the increase in book sales both last quarter and the previous one (the final quarter of 2008, that is). If that is true, this means great things for The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
While the film has a high likelihood of immense success resulting only from its pre-film fan-base (of which there are millions), with the fan-base expansion coming off of Twilight (and its stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner), that success might just be even more paramount than readily anticipated.
On its “50 Biggest Movies of 2009” prediction list, the Times Online predicts that coming films such as Night at the Museum 2 (starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Amy Adams, and Robin Williams), Knowing (starring Nicholas Cage), Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (starring The Twilight Saga: New Moon new cast-mate Michael Sheen amongst others), G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra (starring Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Marlon Wayans), Dorian Gray (starring Colin Firth, Emilia Fox, and Ben Barnes (who some Twilight fans hoped to see apprise a role in The Twilight Saga: New Moon)), Sherlock Holmes (with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law), Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (with the voices of Denis Leary, Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, John Leguizamo, and Seann William Scott), 2012 (with John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson and Amanda Peet), The Lovely Bones (based off of a best-selling novel, with Susan Sarandon, Rachel Weisz, and Stanley Tucci), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (with returnees Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf), Inglourious Basterds (with Brad Pitt and Mike Meyers), Avatar (by James Cameron), Angels & Demons (based on the best-selling book, starring Tom Hanks and Ewan McGregor), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (starring the one and only Hugh Jackman), Star Trek, Public Enemies (starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale), and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint) will fare well in this year’s economic circumstances.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon, however, was not on that list. Perhaps it was because the article was written on November 10, 2008 (less than two weeks before the release of Twilight), and, despite the wide-spread anticipation for Twilight, New Moon was not yet announced, but I have a feeling that if the list were to be re-written, The Twilight Saga: New Moon would rank high upon it (as the list includes stinkers such as Friday the 13th, there’d be some space to fill). (It should be noted that the same source’s “Biggest Movies of 2008” list did not include Twilight, either (written in January, 2008).)
While some of the Times Online’s list may be an accurate prediction (for example, with its inclusion The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), I offer you a new prediction.
Not only will The Twilight Saga: New Moon be within the top 50 most successful films of 2009 (worldwide), but I dare say it will rank number one.
While, as a fan of the Harry Potter series myself, I can anticipate that this summer’s release will be on par with the success of the prior films, and could see it lingering at the number one spot for the year for some time, New Moon’s unprecedented fan community (who, one can safely imagine, will see the film once, twice, three times or more) will propel the film to the top instantaneously. With up-coming films such as Where the Wild Things Are and Transformers 2, it is imaginable that New Moon will have sturdy competition in the blockbuster arena, but I still think that with the millions of eager nail-biting fans out there for New Moon that the film will take the number one spot and that it will close the year as the number one film for 2009.
With the wild success of Stephenie Meyer's book New Moon, the (obviously) un-anticipated explosion of Twilight the film, the growing cast, and the devotional fan community, I suspect that this prediction will not miss the mark by much.
So, what do you think? Do you think The Twilight Saga: New Moon will take the cake for 2009? Will it rank number one? Comment below and let us know!

yea i deff think the movie will be amazing even though it is basically really sad until the amazing end
Absolutely! Though I prefer Edward & Bella together, and hence like the other books more than New Moon, wild werewolves couldn't keep me from seeing the New Moon movie...repeatedly! I'm sure that is true for many, many Twilight series fans. Yes, your prediction will come true!
Well... for the fact Hsrry Potter had been in the cinemas for a long time since Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone but this prediction might be able to come true. Although I'm not sure if The Twilight Saga: New Moon will reach No.1 in the box office. We'll just have to wait and see.
Iam waiting for harry potter but I would see that movie once... But I know when NEW MOON comes out I would see it like 4 times on opening weekend... I would do the midnight ofcourse then friday wih my bestfriend and saturday with my cousins (Is actually planned)and I would with my 1 of my friend on sunday... I need to get some wolfs eye candy : )
You got to be joking! Twilight was a dud after it's first weekend (which accounted for almost 40% of its over all gross) The one thing Harry Potter has shown (and trust me, the Twilight series, despite how desperately the Twilight girl base tries to argue is not anything like Harry Potter. Harry Potter surpasses Twilight in every aspect and that will become very clear in the fall when New Moon fails to come close to HBP) is that the sequels never do better than the original. None of the four Harry Potter sequels has grossed more than the first. I predict a good opening weekend and then it fizzles out. It will do good to gross more than 200 million. Expect Transformers, Wolverine, Star Trek and HBP to be on top at the end of the year. With Twilight probably even behind Angels and Demons, Up and Ice Age 3.
it'll be amazing for it to be number one film this year ive Twilight hundreds of times and i have it on dvd ive seen some footage on the New Moon set and looks like its gonna be the best film ever
WOW, the author is definitely biased toward New Moon.
I think New Moon is going to earn less than Twilight. Of course, hard-core Twilighters are going to watch it. I dunno about anyone else. Other people who watched Twilight all agree that it SUCKED. I doubt they are going to watch New Moon and if they are, probably to make fun of it.
Millions of people have been waiting for HARRY POTTER 6 (including me), TRANSFORMERS 2, and TERMINATOR SALVATION. These three movies are probably going to be the top films of 2009. There's a LOT of hype surronding them, AND the three movies always earn above $300 mill. Transformers earned ... about $700 mill? NOTHING NEAR $300 mill! And Harry Potter, every movie in the series has earned at least $800 million! And NO DOUBT Terminator is going to earn more than $300 million!
SO NEW MOON ... IS DEFINITELY NOT GOING TO BE #1, THAT IS SERIOUSLY A JOKE.
:)
I'm sure Harry Potter will beat New Moon. I love both franchises dearly, but Harry Potter is easily the winner. Twilight is the big thing right now, so people are losing their perspective. The facts are that each Harry Potter movies sells twice the DVDs that Twilight did, and at the box office, Harry Potter makes more than twice what Twilight did.
Seeing Harry Potters new trailer I think will beat New Moon as the number one movie of the year not even a contest. Then there is Transformers and Wolverine 0ne that has a large following too. I say New Moon be in the top 25 closser to the 25. Harry Potter has a very large following. These last 3 movies are going to be the best of the series. Sorry New Moon.
I don't think so. Twilight earned just under 400 million last year. That wasn't even the top 10. I'd say it'll do good but nothing special.
While I will most likely see New Moon more times than Harry Potter, I believe Harry Potter will be number one. Harry has a wider fan base, and fans have waited a long time for the lastest in the series.
I didn't go and see Twilight when it was in theaters. But when the DVD came out I ran out and bought it. I enjoyed it so much I read all the books in less then a week. My 9 year old daughter has started to read them now as well. I coach a girls soccer team and just from my daughter and I talking about it they are all reading and eating it up. I'm a hugh fan of all the movies coming out except for S.T. , and The Terminater. I think as of now the fans for twilight might have doubled from just people like me spreading the word to check it out. I don't know if new moon will be #1 this year but I bet it will be in the top 5. Not alot of familys will be taking everyone to see some of the films that some have posted about. New moon is just as important to the fans as twilight. To think that just because it's the 2nd people won't pay attention is not correct. Us fans cannot wait to see the friendship between Bella and Jacob blossom and the return of Edward. The fans know the better new moon does the better the chance to see the whole story pan out on the big screen. Just as Harry did. I'll be at the theaters mulitple times for new moon to try and make it number one just to prove the haters wrong.
twilight will be on top because harry potter is a great series but people wouldn't see it multiple times because after a while it gets boring and there are so many movies about harry potter, new moon on the other Hand is new and even if some people that weren't fans went and saw it and didn't like it there are many fans(millions)that see it multiple times so that makes up for the people who didn't like it. Besides if u don't like twilight and new moon then if u pay and watch it u can either enjoy the movie or u lose your money that u can't get back so still your 10$ is going to help make the movie gross higher and it going to become number 1 GO TWILIGHT!!!!!!!!!
New Moon will most definitely be number one...no doubt about it! It has intrigue, romance, and most of all......a shirtless Taylor Lautner and it has Rob Pattinson in it, so it has to be amazing! Although New Moon is my least fave book out of the 4, I fully believe that the outstanding cast of New Moon (the movie) will do Stephanie Meyer justice, just as they did in Twilight.
Yes! I think it may surprise all those that think it will not be. I did not see the 1st in the theater, but have since purchased the movie and read all the books. I can't believe how many people around my age (mid 40s) have done this same thing. I believe there will be a much bigger turn out for the following movies!
I must admit that this is the most ridiculous article I have ever read concerning film boxoffice. The author clearly needs to visit boxofficemojo.com and have a look at the top films from last year and their grosses. In order for New Moon to be the most successful film of the year it would need to more than double the worldwide gross of Twilight, which is almost unheard for any franchise. One notable exception is of course The Dark Knight, but as we all know there were many other factors at play which propelled it to instant success.
Twilight made just over $350 mil which ranked just outside the top 10 last year. New Moon's chances of breaking into the top 10 this year are looking very slim indeed. Everyone knows that the frontrunner to win the box office crown this year is almost certainly James Cameron's 'Avatar'. This is the man who made the highest grossing film of all time- Titanic and knows how to make a film that appeals to all demographics.
My predictions for the top ten grossing films of the year are as follows:
1. Avatar - $1 billion +
2. HP - $910 mil
3. Transformers 2 - $820 mil
4. Ice Age 3 - $740 mil
5. Angels & Demons - $630 mil
6. Night at the Museum 2 - $570 mil
7. Up - $540 mil
8. Terminator Salvation - $520 mil
9. Wolverine - $470 mil
10. Sherlock Holmes - $440 mil
**Twilight = $420 mil Max!!**
I can see New Moon beating out 2 if not 3 of those top 10 listed. And I think more people will think of it as less of a "girlie" film and go and see it.
If anything, I predict New Moon will be a lot more frontloaded than the first, and might make slightly more, but I could care less.
James Cameron's Avatar is going to be the surprise hit nobody really sees coming, hardly anyone knows about it now, but its certainly going to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
Yes I think so too.I think New Moon might even reach the billion dollar mark.
New Moon- $1 billion??? Ok lets put this in perspective. Not a single Harry Potter film has hit the 1 billion dollar mark. Harry Potter (not a fan btw!) is a much bigger franchise than twilight will ever be not only in terms of box office gross but also ancillary sales and mostly importantly- book sales! One other thing to consider is that the 1st film in the Twilight series was not recieved all that well by critics and I have heard many people talk about how they saw the first film in the cinema and hated it. A lot of people saw the first film out of curiosity and I'm sure it didn't win over many male fans and especially the horror crowd. Everyone knows that the best Vampire Romance of last year was Let the Right One In- so I suggest that any Twilight fans check that out and enjoy a truly superior film!
I think it well do verry good twilight has a verry large fan age gap from young girls to mid age that I think will do verry well.
Go Twilight !!!!
New Moon will def kick all those movies butts!!! Even though i enjoy Harry Potter and love Avatar, New Moon has opened peoples eyes to recognizing the Twilight book Saga and gained numerous fans across the globe. Sorry other movies but New Moon will be #1!!!
I think twilight will do a lot better than what people think it has a verry large fan gap from young to a lot older I was verry suprized at the age difference at the movies and despite it has done ausom for a movie that came out in nov.
Go Twilight!!!
I love the Twilight saga, I know a lot of people are waiting for New Moon and Harry Potter, I believe HP, is an incredible movie, but I agree with some comments here I would go to see it, but only once, I saw Twilight SIX times, and I am not a Movie goer, I always wait for the dvd, Obviously New Moon, is going to be bigger because the expectations are growing and growing...and I will see it Six or SEVEN times, because I like it and to prove all those HATERS WRONG!! Even knowing that Rob Pattinson is going to be absent in at least half of the time.....GO TWILIGHT!!!
I think it will be second, behind Harry Potter.
But New moon will probably do way more than twilight in my opinion,it's only getting bigger.
No way will new moon break a billion or be #1. And all twilight fans that are on here saying they will go see the movie hundreds of times to prove haters wrong, seriously grow up and don't waste ur money. Harry potter or Transformers will be #1 because of the time that has been put in them to make normal people see it more than once.
I agree FULLY with Martin!!!!!!!
GO TWILIHGT
i love the books
team edward but team taylor
ome i am so exited
cant wait
i really hope that this movie is better than twilight the movie. that movie was horrible compared 2 the book
make it good people
New Moon is going to b th #1 movie no doubt
I can't wait!!!!!!
Duh.
what about harry potter????? that's like always number one!
I LUV HARRY POTTER!!!!!!!!!
Ya, but it's going to have it's competition. If it wants to be #1 it will have to beat Harry Potter. But I'm sure it will be #1. I'm twilighter and I'm a Potter. However, I'll see Harry Potter like two times, but I'll see New Moon like more than two times. And thats why I think New Moon will be #1. Because people who are fan of both movies will see Harry Potter a few times; with Twilight they'll see it like more then 3 or 4 times because theirs just so much to indulge out of the movie.
I love both Harry Potter and Twilight, but I love twilight more.
i am out of the closet Twilight obsessed!!i dont care what people think of me!! i LOVE that film and its thee best film ive ever seen, basically cuz ive been intrigued and interested in all things supernatural since i was young and mixing my favourite mystical creature with any girls dream of a romantic film and youve just given me a film that can only be made for me!!lol. i guess you could say that Twilight sings to me, like Bellas blood sings to Edward!!lol. i saw it twice in the cinema and ive NEVER saw a film twice in the cinema in my life! and considering New Moon is my favourite book EVER and not just from the Twilight series, i think ill be going more than that!!!so i have high hopes that it will be NUMBER ONE!! because lets face it!! it deserves to be no.1!!!!! and i am one of those many people who have switched from being in love with Harry Potter to being so in love with Twilight that ur obsessed!!! HP has no comparison to Twilight, especially New Moon!!! so i KNOW that New Moon will beat Harry Potter!! i AM extremely excited for the half blood prince tho! i loved the book and am eagar to see the film, but im nowhere near as excited about that compared to New Moon!! i literally cried when i saw that clip from Entertainment Tonight!! its ridiculous wat this series has done to me!!! Like i never thot id be as obsessed and in love with a fictional character in all my life!!like seriously i am worried for my health lol!! GO NEW MOON!!!!
I totally agree that twilight will be the #1 best movie ever(besides eclipse). I mean i have read the harry potter books And the half blood prince was a pretty good book but no WAY is hp ever going to be better the twilight series
i agree new moon is going to be awsome !
i just can wait till november !!
I am one of those "eager nail-biting fans" that can't wait to see New Moon. And yes i believe it'll be #1 for 2009.
Thank you DD for agreeing with my previous comments. Can nobody else commenting here grasp the concept of simple statistics? Twilight grossed less than half of any Harry Potter film. Why would anybody think that New Moon will outgross the new HP? Put it this way: the 1st Harry Potter film is the highest grossing of the series at $974.7 mil. Every other Potter film has failed to meet or exceed that figure. The Potter books are much more popular than Twilight- FACT. They have sold many millions more copies!
Will people please have a look at how much money Twilight made last year compared to other movies! It is so naive to think that New Moon even stands a chance at pulling in a larger audience than the first film. Lets face it- a lot of the audiences for these types of films do not read the books. They will go to see it because of the hype, if they don't like it they won't see the sequel- that's what happened with the Harry Potter series people! And that's what's going to happen with New Moon. I did not like Twilight- it looked like a made for TV movie (poorly shot, awful dialogue, pretty people but no real bite). Therefore I will not be paying money to see New Moon and a lot of people are with me on this one. My girlfriend did not like it one bit but loves the books and she won't be seeing any sequels.
Avatar will be the highest grossing film of 2009- from the man who made Titanic (the highest grossing film of all time).
Please see 'Let the Right One In' people- if you want a proper vampire love story that's all you need to watch. Beautifully made, wonderfully acted- sweet, scary and poignant!
Of course NEW MOON will be numbah 1! Fans are always going to watch a movie with great casts in it and of course a great story no matter what it costs! GO Carlisle I'm always here to support you!
I love how the skeptics are still going strong. Comments are stating that New Moon won't be that big. LOL!!! The Twilight haters still don't get it. Just wait and see. I love Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is my favorite book but nothing's going to beat Team Wolf Pack this fall...NOTHING!! New Moon will rise and kick everyone's behind!!
I honestly think it could be number 1. I wouldn't hold my breath and wait on it, but it really wouldn't surprise me. Everyone keeps comparing Twilight to Harry Potter and that's fine, but you have to look at when Harry Potter came out, how LONG it's been out, and what's happened recently.
I think the fans are a bit disgruntled with all the set backs and that could hurt it. Yes, it's highly anticipated, but is it going to be seen 3 times by the fans? I don't think it will. Too many of the fans still like it enough to see it opening night/weekend, but not enough to see it multiple times.
In all honesty, I think Star Trek may take a higher spot than New Moon just because...well, it's Star Trek. I'm not a fan, but there are probably more fans of it than HP or Twilight.
Looking only at Twilight, the movie didn't have the media hype New Moon has. It was seen as a "cult" type film and no one thought it would make half what it did. Yet, here we are still talking about how much money the merchandise alone is making.
Don't count out New Moon just yet. I'm not going to fangirl out and say it's going to win an Oscar for Best Picture but I will say it's a bigger contender than a lot of people want to think.
No, Twilight will definately not be #1 in the box office for the entire year, maybe for the month of November, but DEF not the entire year.
Too bad some people want to give Robert a bigger part in the film New Moon. The people (the director mainly) should just keep to the book and have Taylor play Jacob the way Steph intended it to be.
But don't get me wrong, I LOOOOVE Rob/Edward, it's just we're going to get plenty of his action (and hotness) in Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Why not let Taylor/Jacob get some action in on Bella wile he can.
It's just a thought!!!!!
best!!!!!!!!!!!! the best movie and the best saga i had ever read!!!!!!!!! lurve it!!!!!!! hope i can meet the writer( stephanie meyer ) and the actors personally......... HOPEFULLY..........!!!!!!!!!!
Harry potter is popular yes, but he is so 2 years ago. New Moon will be the #1 movie all over the world. mainly because it is a great story, and also because of the incredibly talented and gorgeous cast. Oh and JC and all you other Twilight Saga haters better watch what they say unless they want millions of screaming mad fans to be kicking their doors down and receiving a lot of hate mail. if you eveb knew the Twihards at all you would realize that we do mean we will see the movie hundreds of times. New Moon wil make billions dont doubt that, it would be very foolish to do so.:P
I absolutely love the Twilight book series and I just love the movie as well!!! My mom is an even bigger fan than I am! Can't wait for NEW MOON to come out in theaters!
can i say hell yea! anyone who reads the series will be waiting for each movie to come out.....like harry potter but what girl can resist a love story???? or woman?
This whole article is a waste lol, Harry Potter will be number one. end......of.....story. :)
I'm almost positive New Moon with be #1, then Transformers, and then Harry Potter! Twilight was big last year and has an even bigger fanbase now than ever. So their's no way it's going to go down now.
i pray that new moon is #1 but i honestly think transformers will be. new moon will fall in the top 5 though. which is greattt.
