The Cerrito Theatre in El Cerrito closed in 1966 and since then has served the community as a furniture warehouse. Inspired by the success of
Parkway Speakeasy in Oakland which opened in 1997, the city of El Cerrito asked the Oakland founders to restore the Cerrito theatre.
Cerrito Speakeasy opened its doors in November 2006. For just $7 (and half that price every Wednesday!) you are granted admission into a refurbished old-fashion Speakeasy theater.
Enjoy beer, wine, a variety of different food choices (pizza, pasta, salads), popcorn that has not been overly drenched in butter, and lie back in the luxurious and comfortable seats to enjoy the movie. They usually screen recently released Hollywood movies, but they also show classics, cult favorites, local films, and have special benefit screenings.
PLUS! On top of getting to enjoy a beer in an affordable yet classy movie theater, El Cerrito Speakeasy boasts:
- A hang-out room open for all ages with videos, playstation, comfy couches and a selection of board games,
- Tuesday night Baby Brigade for all those parents with tiny newborn humans
- Parking is refreshingly easy to find and decidedly Not an Issue in my experience
- Private events, fundraisers ,and a variety of special events.
Sadly:
- All adult patrons must bring photo ID
- You must be 18 and over for weekday shows
- 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult on weekends
This is a cozy and different movie experience that comes without the high cost of a normal movie theater, and it is a fun idea for a date or a rainy day.
