11-14 year olds dating. Seriously? Wake up and smell the coffee people, the answer is yes. And if it is hard to wrap your head around that fact, try this: half of all 6th graders say they are dating and 42.1% of these children report being victims of dating physical violence.
Leading San Francisco and Bay Area based organizations, including Blue Shield of California, the Family Violence Law Center in Oakland and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation want to do something about it. Next week they are gathering in San Francisco to launch the largest private initiative to prevent teen dating violence.
These organizations are working together and funding, “Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships”. They will help empower 11-14 year olds to prevent teen dating abuse and develop healthy relationships. And they are doing with 18 million dollars of funding. Eleven communities across the country will run pilot programs with “Start Strong” grants.
“Start Strong” youth will be on hand to speak of their experiences along with experts in the field of teen abuse at the Hotel Nikko on July 30th.
