Every kid has a dream. The trick is empowering each child to live it. This is what the San Francisco based non-profit group SPARK tries to do every day.
This year SPARK is working with students in San Francisco’s Excelsior District who attend James Denman Middle School. The district is among the most ethnically diverse in the city and has recently been rocked by homicide violence. They are pairing students with apprenticeships in architecture, law, graphic design, culinary arts and chemistry.
These workplace-based apprenticeships — in professions each student has identified as a “dream job”— are complemented by a leadership curriculum, workshops, and field trips. This experience can create a powerful sense of relevance for students, while providing the skills and confidence necessary to find success in school and in life.
SPARK’s Sugar Rush annual fundraiser will take place on Nov. Rush at 111 Minna Gallery, featuring unlimited dessert tastings from Boulevard, Chez Panisse, Humphry Slocombe, and lots more delectable goodies.

Wow! Isn't that a fantastic idea! I wonder how it is working out?
This is a wonderful project. Very inspiring for kids to have hands-on experience that is based on real-world experiences.
