What made Carrol O'Connor's brilliant character, Archie Bunker, so important, so instantly recognizable world-wide, was the humanity O'Connor gave the character, to soften his cave man, reactionary, un-educated views on life. It made the bad things he believed in all the more scary coming from someone you wanted to like, underneath all the bluster. ALL IN THE FAMILY was the BEST TV Show-- comedy or non-comedy-- of all time.

Archie was funny without a doubt, but the best t.v. dad was Sheriff Andy Taylor, with a close second by Ward Cleaver and Professor John Robinson.
