It's a hard job talking (truth) and trash about the likes of Paris Hilton, Jon and Kate, John Mayer and a gaggle of other over-publicized celebs, but somebody has to do it. Fortunately, Chelsea Handler is up for it.
The sharp-tongued comedienne turned talk show darling (“Chelsea Lately”) cum best-selling writer (“Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea”) takes on the Mountain Winery in Saratoga Saturday in what promises to be a spirited affair. (True, MW is technically a winery, but don't be surprised is the vodka starts flowing—it's Chandler's drink of choice.)
But Handler is hot, hot, hot these days thanks her quick-wit and comedic flair, most of it seen whenever the comedienne tours, but it's always on full throttle nightly on“Chelsea Lately,” the irreverent half-hour late-night talkfest that fast became the ratings darling of the E! channel when it was unveiled several years ago. Handler, revered for “telling it like it is” and talking about things others are afraid to discuss, says “nobody is off limits.”
“I think John Mayer is making a resurgence as a complete idiot,” she happily tells me. “After Jennifer [Aniston] … it’s full throttle. He’s a real mess — a carnival freak — and I’d like to keep track of that.”
Fans, especially the LGBT community, seem to appreciate that she does just that with a gaggle of other celebs, too. Lately, Jon and Kate a la "Jon & Kate Plus 8" fame have been a delicious target.
“I’m outspoken,” she says of why she thinks people have embraced her, “and the topics I bring up, which I have a passion for, are important in the context of the silliest show in television.”
Over the past six months, Chandler's celebrity has continued to rise. She hosted the recent GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco and was the Grand Marshall in the Los Angeles Gay Pride Parade. She's also penning a new book, "Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang."
“Everybody needs to be tolerant of all people,” she points out about her LGBT ties, as well as GLAAD's significance. “It’s about human beings and being helpful and accepting to people who are in different situations than you."
In the meantime, this weekend, it's also about laughs—and there will be no shortage of those.
