A retooled 'Charlie's Angels' may be heading to ABC

Back in the ’70s, Charlie's Angels was heavensent. It boosted ABC's ratings, made stars of Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith, and spawned the term "jigglevision." But can another televised Angels take flight?

Drew Barrymore seems to think so. The star of the two film versions of the popular television show is reported by ABC News to be developing the revamp with original producer Leonard Goldberg, who was at the helm behind the scenes with the late TV titan, Aaron Spelling. The buzz in the air is that ABC is close to ordering a pilot.

That could prove fruitful. Done right, a reincarnated Angels could be divine. But it does beg the question: Who the hell will star in it? Take note of the following pairings of troikas below:

Lucy Liu, Kate Walsh and Kristen Bell: Liu scored high points in the film versions—she tends to find better roles on television than film; Walsh may just be waiting for a pink slip from the ailing Private Practice so this could be an answer to her prayers; Bell (Veronica Mars, Heroes) is always embraceable.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Price: Gellar has already proven she can kick ass (Buffy anyone?); Simpson would be the perfect sprinkle of fluff; and Price, well, she basically starred in a distant Angels cousin, NBC's ill-fated Lipstick Jungle.

Jennifer Garner, Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff: Imagine that! Garner's an Alias grad; and Helfer and Sackoff have just come off of a successful run on Battlestar Galactica. Beyond that, all three actresses have delicious acting chops—not to mention striking beauty.

Kristen Bell would be PERFECT! "Veronica Mars" was almost an Angel sleuthing training academy!

Given Private Practice has an audience of 10 million and is ABC's third best performing show in the 18-49 demo, I can't agree with your point about it being "ailing". Kate Walsh has made that show a success and with current ratings it's a sure bet for a fourth season next year.

Private Practice is actually closer to 9 million viewers and it is the 4th best show in the 18-49 demo on ABC, but still it's far from being ailing. It probably will get a 4th season order.

Besides that Kate Walsh isn't a good actress, so I don't want to see in a remake of a classic series like Charlie's Angels. It's enough that viewers have to endure her bad acting on Grey's and PP.

So true Examinerites... Re: "ailing." I meant to report "creatively ailing." At least in my opinion. Many thanks for reading. Here's an alternate troika:

Katee Sackhoff, Michelle Rodriguez (of LOST) and (wait for it) ... Eva Mendes.

    Summer Glau (SCC and Firefly)

Eliza Dushku, Nia Long, and Emily Blunt. But Emily Blunt would never do TV.
