'The Voice' champion shares artistry advice

Javier Colon might as well be crowned as America’s prince. The soulful singer who can play the hell out of an acoustic guitar and a piano won over audiences weekly with his smooth vocals, crooked smile, and sweet sentiment. Colon poured everything he had into each and every The Voice performance-- each and every song-- and his emotion was felt by everyone listening. Even if you flipped on NBC absentmindedly and were distracted or busy multi-tasking during Tuesday night viewings, you couldn’t help but stop anything you were doing and be entirely immersed in Colon’s sultry sound. He commands your attention; he commanded your votes; and now all of that hard work has finally paid off, walking away with the $100,000 and a record deal with Universal Republic win.

“Try everything! Try everything, do everything-- do every performance that you can because you never know where your big break is going to come from,” Colon advised LA TV Insider Examiner of what he would say to any up-and-coming performer, artist, or kid with a dream.

Now Colon is an overnight sensation…quite a few years in the making. But everything he went through-- every mistake or misstep or deal that just fell through despite his hard work-- has gotten him to where he is now and made him the man and artist he is supposed to be, and for that, Colon has nothing but love. And he wants everyone to be just as open to opportunity because of that character it will inevitably build and richness it will add to all of the art that comes later.

“When I was in sixth grade, my mom made me do this talent show that I didn’t want to do. I ended up doing it and I ended up meeting this great guy who ended up being one of my mentors; he played the guitar, and he sang, and I just wanted to be like him. And he ended up introducing me to another person, who introduced me to another person, who introduced me to another person, who ended up getting me my first record deal. So had it not been for this silly thing in sixth grade, I wouldn’t have had that opportunity,” Colon shared with us.

“Obviously that didn’t end up the way I wanted it to, but had I learned a lot from it, and it was a big opportunity at the time, so it just goes to show that you have to put yourself out there and try anything you can and don’t burn any bridges.”

Aside from his obvious talent, Colon is also a genuinely good and thoughtful guy. We can’t help but root for him to succeed, and now we can’t wait to see what he will do next!
