So far it is the kids of Shameless who have been spotlighted, and rightly so. Last week was an extremely big episode for Cameron Monaghan’s Ian, who came out to a classmate, as well as Emma Kenney‘s Debbie who got oddly attached to the little old woman they “borrowed” to pretend to be their Aunt Ginger. Tonight’s episode proves to be another big one for Debbie, who is so distraught now over losing her Aunt Ginger that she steals a baby. Yes, you read that right. Because what the Gallaghers need are more mouths to feed!
But what about Justin Chatwin? His Steve was a man of mystery right from the get-go when he met Fiona (Emmy Rossum) in the club. He seemed too good to be true with his fancy clothes and expensive car but then quickly revealed a darker and honestly more interesting side when it turned out that car wasn’t really his and he hinted at being just as screwed up (though in very different ways) as Fiona herself.
Things took a turn, though, when his sick sense of humor reared its ugly head and he abandoned Frank (William H. Macy), leaving him to sleep off his drunkenness on a park bench…in Canada. He claimed to just be thinking of Fiona in that moment: that he wanted to do something to make Frank wake up and see just how he was affecting his family, but really his actions made things ten times worse for his family, as they had to scramble to get him returned home-- all without a passport and without the proper funds. Sure, Steve came through again there, but he still didn’t seem to show any real remorse.
So what’s his deal? Well, why don’t you let Chatwin explain him himself:
“Steve is a hopeless romantic,” he said during Showtime’s winter press tour in Los Angeles. “And it was an interesting process, working on this show, because I didn't quite know where the story was going…And it was interesting, because every single time the new script would come out, I would find something a little new about my character, where I came from, and it just‑‑ it gets really, really, really complicated with my character, but, in the end, he's a‑‑ he's a rogue that's madly in love with Fiona, and it's almost like he's seen the future, and he knows he's going to be with her. No matter what she does, he will still constantly be pursuing her and constantly be there for her.”
Hmm, with his use of the past tense during a time when the show was still in production, we’re a little skeptical that Fiona allows him to be in it for the long haul… After all, she casts Steve aside pretty quickly after their road trip to the greater north and starts a “relationship” with her old childhood cop boyfriend. One that turns much more serious than perhaps she intended it to be.
What do you think is really going on with Steve? And do you see a happy ending for those two crazy kids, even if it’s not the traditional storybook one with a white picket fence and only two-point-five kids?
