PETA reacts to Obama's fly swat (video)

 CNBC Video: Obama kills a fly

Gossip site TMZ.com is reporting that animal rights group PETA has released a statement regarding President Obama's killing of a fly during a White House interview with CNBC's John Harwood.

The insect started buzzing around the president during Tuesday's Q&A that covered several topics, including the world's financial markets and the protests in Iran. Unwilling to tolerate the winged creature anymore, he waits for it to land on the back of his left hand.

The last thing it saw in life was Obama's right palm.

"Nice!" said Harwood.

"Now, where were we?" Obama asked immediately following the fatality.

As laughter escalated from the film crew and White House staffers, Obama said, "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker." He then used his foot to try and slide the carcass off to the side.

As it lay dead on the rug, the president encouraged CNBC cameras to zoom in and get a shot of his work.

According to TMZ, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had this to say about the whole thing: "He isn't the Buddha, he's a human being and human beings have a long way to go before they think before they act."

    It's a fly. Flies have sex on poop and hang around large animals' butts. I say we kill them all.

    Few people understand how this story unfolded. All the media were begging PETA for statements. Media outlets do this in order to drum up controversy and interest. They succeeded very well. There's no evidence that PETA had any intention of initially commenting at all.

    Their members don't want animals needlessly killed and probably as a friendly gesture, sent their $8.00 bug catcher as a gift. I don't think they were taking it all to seriously.

    PETA's blog entry was pretty rational, though slightly ambiguous. They didn't ask for this publicity, but commenters respond with "get a life." as if PETA was sticking their nose in this. More like the media needs to stop exploiting groups for headlines.

    PETA looks bad here to many people, but it's the media that exploited them, making them look foolish by begging for quotable quotes.

    @ms

    Yes, but a high profile organization like PETA who are good at exploiting the media and creating sensational headlines in their own right, should have known better. They could've responded with humor and possibly even have gained support from folks who thought they were a little on the extreme side. Instead, they just validated those feelings.
