Congratulations to Bethesda's own Darley Newman and her husband Chip Ward, who found out last month that their PBS equestrian travel series "Equitrekking" has been nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards.
Talk about a dream job. The couple, who met in college at George Washington University, travels to exotic locales around the globe engaging in Newman's lifelong passion – horseback riding.
As host, Newman saddles up to explore the history and natural surroundings of a selected city as local guides trot alongside providing insight. Capturing everything in high definition is cinematographer Greg Barna, who received a 2009 Daytime Emmy nod for Outstanding Single Camera Photography.
"Greg is truly fearless. He's ridden into the crater of a volcano on Maui, along some rough patches by the U.S. - Mexico border, Bryce Canyon in Utah, the beaches of Southern Spain and beyond, all just to get the perfect shot," notes Newman.
"Equitrekking" is also nominated in the category of Outstanding Special Class Series, where it will face off with MTV's "Made" and "True Life" specials, A&E's "We Mean Business" and the Style Network's "Split Ends."
“I am very excited and honored that 'Equitrekking' has been nominated,” says Darley, a Myrtle Beach, S.C. native. “The series is a combination of my passion for horses and travel. To be able to travel the world and share these unique experiences with viewers through PBS is a dream come true.”
The show's current fourth season (airing 2:30 p.m. Sundays here on WHUT) finds Newman exploring an underground city and ancient villages in Central Turkey, visiting castles in Scotland and Wales, and watching bald eagles soar over the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.
The crew is already at work on season five, with stops in Uruguay, Montana, Turkey and Alberta on the schedule.
The Daytime Emmy Awards will take place on August 30 from the Historic Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles and will air live on the CW beginning at 8 p.m. (ET). Meanwhile, the clip below explains how Newman and Ward built "Equitrekking" from the ground up.
