Raymond Clark III Facebook

Annie Le

Social networking sites should save copies of potential murderers profiles to assist law enforcement in their investigations.  Raymond Clark III, suspect in the murder of Yale student Annie Le, had profiles on most of the popular social networking sites, but they soon disappeared when law enforcement began to close in on him.  With these profiles occupying such a large part of our lives, untold amounts of evidence likely vanished with the deletion of his pages.

Saving copies of everybody's profiles could be a daunting task, but it's one worth attempting.  Some might object to this idea on the grounds that it violates the right to privacy of those possible perpetrators in question.  However, how much privacy a person has on the internet is questionable.  Despite the privacy measures put into place by sites like Facebook, the wall between you and intruders in razor thin.

Now, a law enforcement agency would have to subpoena the social networking site in question, and have reasonable cause for wanting to obtain the contents of the profile.  Warantless information gathering is an injustice, whether or not it's on the Internet or in public.  The legal rights of the suspect would be respected every step of the way.

Interesting perspective, but one I don't agree with. Law enforcement agencies should have to get subpoenas in such cases. I would imagine if and when those changes ever take place, less incriminating evidence will be available on those sites anyway. Criminals will be the first to take more precautions.
