This Saturday, CBS' 48 Hours Mystery will cover a case involving the 2004 murder of a prominent Phoenix art dealer.
Jay Orbin's dismembered remains were discovered in a 50-gallon plastic container in October 2004, a month after his wife had reported him missing. Only the torso was recovered; his arms, legs, head and shoulders were never found.
His wife Marjorie Orbin, a former Las Vegas showgirl, became the prime suspect in the case, which resulted in an 8-month long trial this year in Phoenix. In the trial, prosecutors produced store surveillance video of her purchasing the large plastic tub in which the remains were found.
Jurors reached a verdict on September 15, and Orbin was ultimately sentenced to life in prison for the killing.
Despite determining that the murder was committed for financial gain, the jury declined to impose the death penalty. The decision was made out of consideration for the couple's 13 year old son, now living with his uncle, Jay Orbin's brother Jake.
Marjorie Orbin's glamorous looks and colorful personal history, as well as the gruesome nature of the crime, make it a sensationalistic, attention-grabbing story. But ultimately and appropriately, all those involved recognize that at this point, the welfare of the Orbins' young son is of paramount consideration. For a family involved in dealing with the aftermath of a truly tragic situation, the healing process still continues.
The episode will air this Saturday, Nov. 21st at 9:00 p.m. on KPHO Channel 5.
"A beautiful showgirl is caught in a web of sex, lies, greed and murder." - CBS website's description of the episode.
