World Series telecast a ratings winner for FOX?

The Fox (WNYW) Network’s telecast of the San Francisco Giants’ series-clinching 3-1 win over the Texas Rangers last night drew a 10.6 overnight rating, according to A.C. Neilsen. That’s 23% higher than the 8.6 rating for the Indianapolis Colts’ 30-17 victory against the Houston Texans on ESPN.

Did the lack of teams with national followings such as the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox hurt Major League Baseball’s showcase postseason event ?

Yes is the answer...the 10.6 rating for Monday’s Game 5 was down 17% from Game 5 of last year’s Yankees-Philadelphia Phillies series — and off 5% from Game 5 of the Phillies-Tampa Bay Rays series in 2008, which started on a Monday and concluded on a Wednesday, plus NBC’s New Orleans Saints-Pittsburgh Steelers game Sunday night, drew an 11.8 rating vs. a 10.4 rating for Fox’s coverage of the Giants’ Game 4 victory.

On Saturday Game 3 earned the second-lowest television rating for a World Series game.

The Texas Rangers' 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night on Fox drew a 6.7 rating and 13 share, beating only the 6.1 for Game 3 of the 2008 Phillies-Rays series. That game was delayed 91 minutes because of rain and didn't start until after 10 p.m. on the East Coast.

The rating was down 26 percent from the 9.1 for Game 3 of last season's Yankees-Phillies World Series.
