With Super Bowl XLIV only one week away, the networks have announced related TV specials and programs leading up to the big showdown this week. For sports fanslooking to gear up for the big game, there are several programming options from which to choose. Below is a list of Super Bowl TV specials leading up to this year’s big game when the New Orleans Saints battle the Indianapolis Colts.
- “Saturday Night Live Sports Extra”: Sunday, January 31st at 9:00-11:00 ET on NBC. As usual, Saturday Night Live will pull out all the stops for two hours of hilarious comedy sketches. This year’s special will feature a compilation of memorable sports sketches from the show’s 35-year history.
- “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials 2010”: Wednesday, February 23rd at 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Some of the best commercials ever produced air during the Super Bowl. Advertisers try to get the biggest bang for their buck by rolling out their most creative and innovative spots before or during the game. Jim Nantz, the CBS play-by-play announcer and Lara Spencer, host of “The Insider” will host “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials 2010.” Viewers are encouraged to go to www.cbs.com/superbowl to watch and vote on some of the best commercials of the last ten years. The top 3 will be announced during “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials 2010”, and voters can vote live for their top pick, which will be revealed at the end of the special. Viewers will also be able to catch a sneak peek of this year's most anticipated commercials before the big game, as well as get a behind-the-scenes look at how their favorite spots are made.
- “Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam”: Thursday, February 4th at 9:00/8:00c on VH1. Justin Bieber and Rihanna get the crowd ready for some football at this annual event. The free concert will also include performances by Nelly Furtado, Paulina Rubio and Pitbull, and will be broadcast live from South Beach in Miami. Actor Kevin Dillon from “Entourage” and Nancy O’Dell will host the festivities.
- “Super Bowl XLIV Pregame Show”: Sunday, February 7th from 2:00-6:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Super fans can enjoy a full four plus hours of pre-game chatter, analysis, odds talk and entertainment leading up to the 6:30 kickoff. Professional commentators will also highlight many of the players, their history in the NFL and prior accomplishments.
For non-football fans, the following specials will air on Super Bowl Sunday:
- Toilet Bowl Marathon: All day on DIY Network. The entire day is devoted to turning bathrooms from ugly to beautiful.
- Puppy Bowl VI: 3:00 p.m. ET on Animal Planet. Two full hours showcase adorable shelter dogs competing in a variety of “ruff” games and activities.
