David Letterman probably won’t roll out the red carpet any time soon for Jack Hanna. In a hilariously funny segment on the "Late Show With David Letterman," Hanna’s anteater “nibbles” on Dave’s neck, and then proceeds to leave a special deposit on his suit jacket. That kind of unplanned and spontaneous comedy is so much funnier than any “Top 10 List.” Hands down.
David Letterman didn’t exactly appear anxious to hold the long-nosed rodent in the first place. “I don’t know that I have to hold this one. This one is kind of snarky,” he complained to Jack Hanna. However, Dave picked up the anteater, but soon regretted his decision. ”He bit me. Something bit me, Jack! Ow! He did it again. Get him off me!”
Come to find out, Jack Hanna’s creature did not take a nibble out of Dave’s neck at all. Since anteaters do not have teeth, Hanna explained that the anteater’s talons actually caused the hilariously funny mini crisis, which Letterman handled in stride. Hanna went on to explain that the anteater has no teeth, a sticky tongue, lives in treetops, eats 20,000 ants every hour and is known as “the stinker of the forest.” Even after the anteater left a mess on his suit jacket, David Letterman didn’t miss a beat. After acknowledging that the animal left a “little” mess, Jack Hanna asked Dave if he wanted to learn more about the creature. In yet another classic moment, Letterman deadpanned, “Yes, it will come in handy with the lawsuit.”
The segment was reminiscent of the golden days when Johnny Carson interacted with Hanna’s animals. Why is it so funny to see late night talk show hosts squirm when Hannah's animals misbehave? The Letterman/anteater bit will be remembered for a long time, and probably replayed over and over. It was classic Letterman in true form. Simply hilarious.
The segment airs on Friday, February 5th, but was posted early on the CBS "Late Show With David Letterman” website.
