'American Idol:' could Madonna replace Simon Cowell?

With every day, we seem to have another ridiculous name enter the rumor mill for Simon Cowell's potential replacement on "American Idol." As a matter of fact, this one may take the cake as the most ridiculous of all -- Madonna.

According to Perez Hilton, sources close to show boss Simon Fuller would very much like to bring the Material Girl on board as the head judge. The problem? There are actually a few, but the primary one is that it's near impossible to see how Madonna could fit filming for the show into a schedule that already includes touring, charity work, spending time with her family, and recording new music. She would also likely demand a larger salary than production may be willing to pay. (Then again, they were ready to pay Simon supposedly $100 million.)

Of course, Perez took the opportunity yet again to hype himself up as a candidate -- which could actually work if he had a little bit more experience long-term in the music industry. (I know he's working with Travis Garland right now, but he still needs more under his belt.)

Do you think Madonna would be a good "Idol" judge? Let me know your thoughts with a comment below. To view photos from Tuesday night's episode, follow the link here. My recap is at this link.

MADONNA?!!!! Are they INSANE?!!!!!!! Replacing Simon with ANYONE else will be like replacing KFC with boiled chicken, but replacing Simon with MADONNA would be like replacing diamonds with horse manure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A washed-up, boring, unfunny, unclever female pop star to replace England's greatest gift to America since the Beatles?!!!!!!!! If today were April 1, I'd say this was a joke, and a BAD one at that!!!!!!!!

Mmmmmm, Madonna as an American Idol judge? #1,too buzy with the 4 kids,#2doesn't watch tv and probably not interested #3 don't think she has the patience for this kind of gig #4 She is into art and social causes,American Idol is a different league for her#5 She is MADONNA,legend in her own time,America's #1 pop star,Englands greatest gift and not to mention....the worlds. With horse manure, one can grow many beautiful things out of it,with diamonds,They just sit their looking pretty and I assure you, Madonna is no couch potato! Um,..#6 folks may not get what she's really all about. In a nutshell, she struggled, she conquerd and she's content .With her new love's,her old world newfound spirituality and lifestyle honestly,do you really think she would consider taking all that time ? Ellen can do it but with no kids to tie her down and her other gig is practically right next door. Ellen is more people friendly that's a fact but she can afford herself to this kind of venture. Good luck

Madonna would never do it- I'm sure she would draw many more viewers, but quite frankly, this would be a HUGE demotion for her. Kind of like the CEO of General Motors, taking on a job as a used car salesman. Won't happen, period.

BTW- Barnzinger... have you spent the last 30 years in a bubble? Madonna is a LEGEND who has had an enormous impact in today's music scene. Get a clue!

Madonna would be perfect, and I can definitely see why they'd want her. She knows the industry inside and out, has achieved decades of success through working what she has and turning her limitations into strengths. The problem is that Madonna would never go for it. I'm pretty sure she's said herself that she hates American Idol, and refuses to license her music to be covered on the program. If she wouldn't even license her music, why on earth would she tie her professional image to the show? Especially one which is hemorrhaging viewers the way it is? Maybe three years ago when the show had some clout it could have happened, but certainly not now. This is just a desperate ploy to generate some buzz for the dying show.

I think Madonna would be an excellent choice, she got in the old fashioned way, so I think she would be a tough critic. I don't think she would hesitate to tell the contestants the truth. Her life has mellowed out enough, now with a family of her own, she would totally fit into our daily lives as a house-hold name, & not just the legendary icon that she is. I think it would make her seem more real to the people, & less untouchable. Not at all out of the realm of possibility!
