Big Bird and company celebrate #40

Happy Birthday Oscar and Cookie Monster and Big Bird and...well, you see where this is going.  Today, the always popular children's educational program, Sesame Street, is celebrating its 40th birthday as it begins its newest season.  The show will celebrate its anniversary with special guest star, Presidential First Lady, Michelle Obama making an appearance.

Sesame Street premiered on public television on November 10th, 1969 and  is currently the longest running children's prorgram in U.S. television history.  It has become a cornerstone for at least three generations of kids, helping to prepare them for kindergarten and elementary school during a time when there wasn't an outlet for pre-school education.

The show has introduced children to several characters that have become iconic childhood memories, such as Big Bird, Grover, Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie,  Elmo and Oscar the Grouch.  It  has spawned two theatrical movies, "Follow that Bird" (1985) and "Elmo in Grouchland" in 1999.
