Despite continuing falling ratings, American Idol lead Fox to a win Wednesday night (January 25, 2012) in both the 18-49 demographic and in total average total viewers. Idol was down more than 10% from last week's premiere (which was also down) and off nearly 30% from last year's comparable episode.
Fox was also helped by the sneak peak of the pilot for the new series Touch, which held a bigger percentage of Idol's audience than any other drama to debut after the reality show. The series had a strong premiere (fourth highest rated show in total viewers) and should have generated some excitement when it returns in March in its regular timeslot on Mondays following House.
CBS came in a strong second place with new episodes of Criminal Minds and CSI (following a repeat episode of Criminal minds. Wednesday marked the last episode of CSI for star Marg Helgenberger who played Catherine Willows since the series premiere. She went out with season high ratings for the veteran crime procedural.
NBC, ABC, and the CW all came in behind Spanish language station Univision in the 18-49 demo. New episodes of NBC's Wednesday night comedy pairing of Whitney and Are You There, Chelsea? came in behind ABC's reruns of The Middle and Suburgatory.
Over at the CW, One Tree Hill was steady from last week, followed by a repeat of Remodeled.
