Beginning with legendary 1922 German silent film, Nosferatu (a portrayal of Dracula), Vampires have been scaring the masses in the theater and on television. Recently due to the utter madness that is Twilight, we've seen a shift from scary to romantic "creatures of the night." Following in the footsteps of Twilight's success is the HBO program, True Blood and the upcoming CW show, The Vampire Diaries. In each case a central character falls in love with a mortal human or a Vampire. All three programs are based off novels.
Does anyone remember when Vampires were scary? Over the years, television shows and movies have attempted to scare us with Vampires portrayed as ruthless killing machines and only occasionally did we see a love interest develop (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel). The Blade series, a television and movie franchise and 30 Days of Night, a comic book and movie franchise, showed us the familiar side of Vampirism.
But for now, these types of television programs and movies continue to be phased out by the romantic side of things. The juggernaut that is Twilight should keep the romance in the spotlight for a while but remember Vampires aren’t a huge fan of light.
