All across the Internet, people are fascinated by the story of the "Oprah Chimp Woman," whose real name is Charla Nash. Nash was horribly disfigured after she was attacked by a 200 pound chimpanzee on February 16th. Her injuries were described as "catastrophic"--Nash lost her hands, nose, upper and lower lips, eyelids and the bony structures in her mid-face in the attack.
On Wednesday's 'Oprah' show, the lady known as the "Chimp Woman" humanized herself to a surprised viewing audience by lifting the veil that covers her visage, revealing what her face looks like in its current state.
Doctors were able to reattach her one of her thumbs, and Oprah shook it at the conclusion of the interview. When Oprah asked Nash what she would say to people who saw her face didn't know how to react, Nash replied, "I'm the same person I've always been. I just look different. You know, and there's things that happen in life that, you know, you can't change it. You know, it's a tragedy."

I feel sad for EVERYONEI feel sad for EVERYONE involved, including the poor chimpanzee. He should have been able to grow up free in his natural habitat with a family of the same species as him. If humans weren't so destructive he wouldn';t have ad to be born in a chimp sanctuary. His mother escaped from the sanctuary and was shot and KILLED by humans when he was 3 days old! That's when the Herolds adopted him. They tried doing a noble thing by showing this poor thing some human compassion towards animals, which is far too rare these days. But he should never have had to live a life on tv and movie sets, eating and sleeping in a house and living a very human lifestyle. He was a wild animal and should have been running free in a jungle with his true peers. The poor thing's natural insticts weren't given a chance to be utilized and we can't blame the enslaved animal when they get confused in their very unnatural surroundings and go beserk. I find it very very offensive and insensitive tha
and insensitive that no one EVER makes even one tiny comment on the fact that this animal was a victim of this tragedy as well! He was only 14 years old and should have lived to 50! He was beaten with a shovel and stabbed in the back with a butcher knife by his lifelong companion and care-giver and then shot several times and went to die all alone and in pain in his cage. Of course at that point every measure needed to be taken to stop him from killing Nash, but what happened to him is still tragically sad. At least Nash had a good life before the accident and getrs to try to live on afterwards. His whole life was spent in captivity and ended violently and painfully and prematurely. Animals are not objects for us to "own" and dress up and be made to do tricks for our entertainment! They are not "property," and when they are forced to live terribly unnatural and confining lives in zoos or amusment parks or even human households, the results are tragic and unpredictable. The animals are
