Last week ABC aired two new episodes of Better Off Ted, one on its usual Tuesday night and one on Friday after the Rose Bowl. The move has tongues wagging about whether the show's critical acclaim is enough to overshadow its mediocre ratings.
As with most critically acclaimed comedies, Ted has failed to find a commercial audience quickly enough to please the network. “I don’t think the network thought they would have the success they’ve had with their fall shows,” Wellesley native Jay Harrington (Ted) told the Boston Herald. “And they had us kind of waiting in the wings. When those shows hit they didn’t know what to do with us.”
One can only hope ABC will see the value in a smart, unknown comedy like Ted and finally start promoting it properly. Airing a second episode Friday was seen by some as the first step in that direction by providing Ted with a larger lead-in audience, resulting in almost twice the show's normal Tuesday ratings. Others see it as a move by the network to end the show quicker.
Will Ted pull the desired audience? Will the already vehement fan outcry save the show from its fate? Tune in for two new episodes of Better Off Ted this Tuesday at 8:30 and 9:30 (this time opposite the Orange Bowl) to try and save the show from the fate cult comedies like Ted and Arrested Development so often suffer.
