Terrorist bomb derails train in Uglovka, Russia 11-28-2009 (AP)
On Friday November 27, 2009, a 14-car Nevsky Express was derailed when a home-made bomb exploded on the tracks about 9:30 pm. Russian officials are calling this attack, which killed at least 26 and injured approximately 100 more, a confirmed terrorist attack.
Reports state the explosion left a five foot deep crater in the ground where the device, described as the equivalent of 7 kilos (15.4 lbs) of TNT, detonated upon contact with the train, derailing the last 3 cars.
A second device exploded today during clean-up. No word as of yet if anyone was injured in this blast.
In a November 25th posting on the Kavkaz Center website, a letter from a representative of Russian muslim group, Muwahhidun ar-Rusi, which stated, "Friday is the most blessed day of the week for Muslims. Friday is the weekly holiday for the Muslim Ummah. Therefore we have chosen this day to attack Russia, as a gift for the holiday."
The "holiday" referred to is Eid'l Adha, the festival of sacrifice with Friday being the day of prayer in the mosque.
This letter was published 2 days before the bombing, and also claimed responsibility for attacks at a naval arsenal and a power plant. This group pledged allegiance to Dokka Abu Usman, Emir of Mujahideen of Caucasus, Chechen muslim terrorist group represented by the Kavkaz website. The Mujahideen of Caucasus was responsible for the Moscow Theatre standoff and the September 1, 2004 Russian school standoff which left more than 200 dead, which is described as "funny" on the Kavkaz site.
Muslim terrorist attacks appear to be increasing as of late. It is imperative that we are vigilant in our observation and reporting of suspicious activity, and most of all in the protection of our families.
