Vampire Bill Compton to join the cast of Priest

Dread Central reported today that True Blood star vampire Stephen Moyer will be joining the cast of the upcoming vampire movie Priest. This report also confirms Variety accounts that the actor has signed the dotted line, along with actress Lily Collins of "90210". Priest is the hotly anticipated Scott Stewart-directed Screen Gems horror/western/thriller. The film currently stars Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet ("James" from Twilight) and Maggie Q. Moyer will fill the role of the mortal brother of the protagonist, a complete deviation from his current undead leading man position on True Blood.

Adapted by Cory Goodman from a TokyoPop comic book by Min-Woo Hyung, Priest is set in a world devastated by centuries of war between man and vampires. A warrior priest, played by Paul Bettany, turns against the church in order to track down a ruthless band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Cam Gigandet plays a young halfling vampire sheriff who happens to be in love with the priest’s niece. He partners with Bettany and a priestess to save the girl he loves. Apparently, according to Rope of Silicon, Priest has been being batted around Hollywood for quite some time now and at one point the two lead roles were occupied by Gerard Butler and Steven Strait (Sky High) with Andrew Douglas (The Amityville Horror remake) aboard to direct.

No doubt, the addition of Stephen Moyer to the cast will attract a new wave of enthusiastic interest in the development of the film, both from critics and fans alike. Between Gigandet and Moyer, Stewart has definitely covered all of the bases when it comes to vampire fans, from the kind that sparkle in the sunlight to those that will rip your clothes off and drain your veins.

Priest is currently slated for release in 2010.
