Best known for his role as the zealous reverend of the anti-vampire Fellowship of the Sun church, Steve Newlin, on the HBO television series True Blood, Mike McMillian revealed his inner comic book geek to the world back in July at the San Diego Comic-Con convention. An avid reader of comics since childhood, McMillian announced the release of a 4-part mini-series entitled Lucid from Star Trek and Heroes star Zachary Quinto's personal studio, Before the Door Pictures, in partnership with well-known publisher Archaia Comics. Debuting in the summer of 2010, Lucid is a series inspired by Indiana Jones and H.G. Wells and James Bond, as well as McMillian's fascination with counter-culture, and the history of magic. In an interview with Newsarama.com McMillian describes the basis of the comic books as:
...Lucid sort of springs out of the love of those worlds, and it takes place in an alternate universe where major world powers have black ops agents working for them that are trained in the mystic arts, sorcery and magic. So it’s kind of like this world where James Bond has been matched up with Harry Potter in a way, and magicians are working in the interest of national security...our main character is this guy named Matthew Dee, and he's the go-to man for the new president of the United States, President Jefferson Monday. And I kind of wanted to play with the idea of what happens when the President gets into office, and then discovers that all the conspiracy theories or counter-culture ideas are true, that there is this hidden world out there full of mystery and magic and supernatural, and the government has a responsibility to protect its citizens against these things...
McMillian desires to bring back the fun and enjoyable sense of comics from his youth through the combination of action and fantasy, deviating away from the darker more twisted nature of modern day titles. While still playing with the well-worn themes of conspiracy and the supernatural he, as a writer, dreams of bringing back the youthful wonderment that originally ignited his love of the genre through the development of a unique, face-paced story filled with thrilling twists and turns.
